If you're a minion master, why not go for a R secondary for the pet?

Mesmer works only if you're doing a curse based Necro. The hexes from the N side can combine w/ Mes skill Fragility.

Monk is definitely a suitable choice, and useful to your party for healing and protection.

If you were doing a melee oriented Necro (blood based using Demonic Flesh, Life Siphon, Vampiric, plus curses), then maybe an Illusion Weapon and Distortion from Mesmer Illusion line would work.

OK.

well, in hte minutes between when i started this topic (planning to make a minion master as you say) and now, I have decided that there are one too few monks in the world and created a monk.

now, i am left with the dilema of choosing a secondary prof for that monk.

I think for whatever prof i choose, i will only use one of the attributes for that prof i choose to go with healing/protection/and divine favor.

coming to mind are elementalist for earth magic (and it's protection that come with many earth magic skills, or whater), and ranger for beast mastery and the pet.

thoughts?

don't go ranger - the pets are pretty poor.

earth magic is nice - you'll have to use glyphs to manage energy though, otherwise you dont have much else to do that for you..

inspiration mesmer in my opinion is the best - drain enchantment, energy drain/tap and power drain add a slightly offensive side to the monk whilst helping to keep your energy level right up high.

Ranger secondary is nice because it can allow you to up your defensive abilities. Rangers have so many ways of avoiding attacks with their various stances. Not to mention having Throw Dirt...

BTW Healing Spring can be a great way for Rangers to deliver some extra healing to assist monks.

Don't go Ranger for the pet, but feel free to consider ranger anyway, for Wilderness Survival. No shortage of useful ranger skills there - Melandru's healers can be very useful in some areas for example, and there are many other useful ranger skills in there.

Warrior for stances can help (Balanced Stance is great!) and Mesmer can be handy for energy management and protection (Mantras can reduce incoming damage and keep your energy up)
