The question is, why do you want the pet? If you want the pet to be a useful partner that can actually help fight, go ranger. If you want it just to tag along, go warrior.

Rangers get beast mastery as a primary attribute, so it's easier to raise high enough for the pet to be useful in combat than a warrior, who needs to focus many points into strength and a weapon skill.

Please..... If you do plan using a pet as a weapon then the pet will be your main weapon. The pet and NOTHING else. Most u can do yourself in that case - add some damage and/or conditions. Beatmastery needs ton of points and at least 3 skills to make your pet at least a nuisance. To make a real weapon out of him you need 12+ (16 recommended) and 5 skill slots(+1 on selfhealing which requires different attribute to master). Not too much left eh?

Rangers get expertise, not beast mastery, as their primary attribute. So you can go ahead and put beastmastery on a ranger secondary.

Getting your beast mastery beyond lvl 12 actually isnt a big deal. Check out this nice pet guide: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ight=pet+guide
The increase in damage output tapers off after lvl 12 so the only good reason to get it higher is to get a little more punch out of your pet skills. You can make a good fighter out of either a r/w or w/r, but you will have to play differently depending on your primary because of the difference in max energy and regen. If you plan on using mosltly adrenal skills, w/r. Mostly energy skills, r/w. I've tried out both and thats pretty much what it comes down to - energy management.
Oh, and also warriors are commonly thought of a having stronger armor than rangers, but remember that rangers have way more armor vs elemental attacks.

I definitely recomend r/w because although you sacrifice strength, it lets you keep tiger's fury up constantly.

Either way, your weapon skill or your pet's skill isn't going to get over 12 if you want them to be equal. It comes down to rangers having more energy and expertise to use more attack skills (both for them and their pet) and warriors having more armour to be able to survive better on the front lines. W/R could probably get away with the two main pet skills and a shout like Call of Haste. Either way, one of you is going to be stronger than the other. W/R has better armour for themself and can use weapon runes, R/W has more energy and can make better use of pets, and use beastmastery runes, and easier to train elder/dire pets, as opposed to the W/R who will almost always have a hearty pet. A player with a pet just as a sidekick is better off dumping the pet and using more attack skills to boost their own DPS.

I meant it as a primary profession attribute (one that you can use runes to improve, making it easier to raise), as opposed to a secondary attribute (which cannot use rune assistance). I'm not quite sure how you read that as Beast Mastery is their primary attribute.

Last time I checked, BM and Marksman/Swrd/Axe at 12 is about the same as using an EXTRA max damage perfect customized weapon. And last time I checked, you can capture elder wolves south of Granite Citadel, regardless of your class.

I'd go with warrior/ranger, my personal experiences tend to lean that way.
