Necromancer/Elementalist Woes
My Search-Fu is weak. That's my caveat. If this has been hashed, I haven't seen it. I apologize in advance.
I made a Necromancer, tried out all the secondaries and thought that Mesmer seemed the strongest compliment. But, I reasoned, I have a Ranger/Mesmer so I should pick up Elementalist so I can unlock skills and use my last slot for a PvP character (my main is a Warrior/Monk, only L11).
So I picked Elementalist for my secondary and immediately regretted it. I thought, "Maybe I can use Earth or Air to supplement my damage somehow." But as I actually used my skills in conjunction with each other, I couldn't get over how Warrior was a more complimentary secondary than Elementalist was, or seemed to be.
Now, I understand I can change my secondary after Ascension (yet another aspect of the game I don't understand well), but how do I make this work prior to that happening?
Does anyone play this combo? How can I achieve the greatest level of complimentary performance?
Anyway, thanks for reading.

Yeah, N/E is a bit of a mixed bag... one thing nice about the Ele line though are the Glyphs. Even if you just use Lesser Energy, since it isn't tied to an attribute it's quite powerful for secondary Ele's.
The Water line has a lot of hexes which might complement your Curses hexes some if you are using Soul Barbs... other than that you're looking at maybe some strong defensive Earth skills like Ward Against Melee (to help protect your casters), or out-and-out spike damage (Air/Fire).

edit: ^^^^^ yeah everything he said.
Soul barbs + ice magic is very very brutal. It gives a nice damage bonus to already damaging spells, and the hexes wear off and can be reapplied quickly. Another similiar and good combo: ice spikes or deep freeze followed by soul feast.
As a pure necro, ele offers glyph of lesser energy, which is very nice to have until you can get offering, or if you want to use another necro elite.
Wards are good for anyone to bring, so you can use primarily nec skills for offense and ele wards for support.
For glyphs alone, ele is a better secondary than warrior, which has absolutely nothing to offer a nec. Melee necs are pretty terrible, strangely common, and all suffer from delusions that they can tank as well as a warrior. It's best that you don't become one.

i have a nec/elem and i love her.
early in the game, i was using death/fire for some massive aoe damage. i raised minions only to use them as walking battery bombs. death nova, putrid explosion, fireball and inferno create incredible spike aoe damage.
once i got more skills, however, i switched to curses/water and it works tremendously well.
as a support caster in uw or fow, i go blood/water. blood is for the monk battery job, and water is for maelstrom + snaring.
don't give up on the elem secondary just yet. it gets better with more combinations later on.

Thanks! This is giving me hope.
Right now my best skills are Blood Magic, so that's what I've specced in. I can respec without penalty as I get different skills, right? Anyway, I'm leaning toward Water or Earth magic as they seem less heavily represented among the people I've seen in action and it sounds fun.
Okay, making notes: Blood and Water, Curses and Water, Death and Fire, and use glyphs. Got it. Looks like Water is the champ so far.
Oh, and on the melee Necro: yeah, I figured it'd be squishy, but some of those Necro touch attacks just beg to be used. That was the initial draw for me, but I have a Warrior for up close and personal, so it's not a huge deal. I'd rather try and make what I have work, to be honest.

You might have thoughts to go Ele/Nec instead of the other way around - not to deflect away from being a Necro (yeah I know the looks are WAY diff) but you'd gain the E storage capabilities but still keep Curses/Death/Blood for usable attributes.
But I'd agree with previous input - Earth could really help you + minions with the warding capabilites or if you get the hang of minion bombs+fieryexplosions....allot of choices.

The biggest reason to go n/e is for once you get FOC: fest of corruption, which is massive aoe lifesteal on all enemies near your target with hexes on them.
Deep freeze+feast of curruption = muahahaha!

E/N would probably be better for pvp, but for pve, I find that the Soul Reaping attribute is almost unbeatable. And not to deter from FoC, but the cap isn't exactly easy, and in pve, you can do more damage with spiteful spirit anyway.
