You can also use degen to do a lot of damage just need to figure out how to make combos like conjure phantas+poison arrow for a r/me. Rangers are best for spreading degen since poison arrow has a fast recharge time. Another nice combo is rotting flesh+poison arrow for a r/n. Also rangers don't get attacked too much unlike a mesmer and a monk so they don't have to worry about dying too much.

Sadly most pvpers have mend ailment and a hex remover handy. Degen isn't as practial as direct damage against most non pre-made builds.

The ranger class is very versatile, i find that rangers are best wearing groups health and morale down. Being crippled, blinded, bleeding, poisoned, set on fire, being knocked down or having a skill being interrupted is demoralising and takes a huge toll on enemy team health and enemy teams effectiveness. They can interrupt better than any other proffesion, their traps take out any in the area with big damage and great effects, e.g. bleeding, crippling or being knocked down. Their pet is an extra man on the field. Their bow enables them to fight from distance and yet deal damage.

Quite simply the ranger can harrass, wear down, demoralise and minimise enemies attacking capabilites. They are invaluable and are suited to all types of battle/missions. 'Jack of all trades'.

Since rangers have been nerfed and classified as the "wily support character", there have been less damage builds, and more "make it easier for the warrior" builds. So far i've only enjoyed a *NON-premade* trapper or echoed debilitating shot spammer for support, and I rather like the spike damage of those rangers with buffs and quick shot.
