ah, this again...
Healing monks and protection monks are really the only kind that are sought after in most guilds/guild war teams/tomb teams. Smiters are.... weak, IMO. Sure, Shield of Judgement is cool, your Balthasar's Aura can deal 250+ damage to everything around you eventually, ignoring armor, and sure, most teams in the comp arenas think you're a healer and don't expect you to charge up and start throwing DoT's at them, but ... you're likely to get owned in a matter of seconds, and in your place the team could have brought an interrupt ranger, a spiker elementalist, or, a healer monk However, if you're going to be farming, smiting prayers are THE way to farm, though you'll need some healing prayers mixed in there as well.
That said, go healing until you Ascend or until you start doing a lot of PvP, at which point you can choose to go healing or protection. Protection has many support skills which can significantly aid the healer monk(s) in your party by reducing the damage your party members take, or even using skills like Pacificism (excuse my spelling) to stop opponents attacking altogether. Protective Spirit can reduce the damage from spikers targeting your party member by a suprising amount (my air ele can only deal ~50 damage with his lightning orb while a foe has Protective Spirit on him). Protection also has a few very useful Elites that can save your party members' lives over and over again - like Mark of Protection (my favorite) and Shield of Regeneration.
Healing monks are always in demand (I've seen someone Ascend and reach level 20 within a single day on his healing monk), since they have a very difficult - and very crucial - job in every team. Most tombs teams now run with two healing monks and a protection monk because the job get way too hard for a single healing monk to keep eight people alive. Word of the wise: Only make a monk if you're looking for a challenge. My personal favorite skill for a healing monk is Word of Healing, due to its massive healing potential, low energy cost, short cast, and reasonable recharge. Bring skills like Healing Touch and Orison of Healing for use on _yourself_ if you get attacked. Infuse Health has the ability to heal for 350+ health, but at the cost of half your current health - so use it only in emergencies.
I'll leave the rest up to a more experienced player (I'm usually the one getting healed, not healing ).

Monk fun.
Don't think that being a healing monk is a full time job. Monks can be effective healers without entirely sacrificing their secondary. I agree the Word of Healing is my skill-of-choice, but Healing Breeze (as common as they come) is fantastic too. Those and Touch can keep you pretty safe and effective. Then there's FIVE MORE SKILL SLOTS, not to mention how many leftover attribute points you've got. The most fun I've had in the random and team arenas is as healing monks who, given the opportunity, can turn around and cause serious trouble.
I've seen monks who were effective necromancers, mesmers, warriors, elementalists, and rangers... all while still being quite decent at keeping a group alive. The secondary isn't just for gaining energy, it can be your secret weapon.

well personally, i dont really like word of healing that much. but i use to use it, until recently when it became bugged...
anyways, the elite i use most would prolly be shield of regeneration. its costly, but the recharge is reasonable and the effect is unparallel.
anyways, for a prot monk, you'll want reversal of fortune and protective spirit, the 2 overpowered skills, maybe shileding hands for annoying sniper rangers, and of course, i suggest shiled of regeneration and maybe a rez. those are just the standard "staples" so add w/e u want to that.

Just becuase you have alot of skill slots and attributes left doesn't mean its not a fulltime job. The group is required 2 full time healers or GG.

I agree, and when u have people yelling at you to heal and res and pull a miracle out ur crack..it can get very stressful and infuriating to say the least.
