I'm N/Me11 and focussed on Blood and Domination, a couple in Inspiration with 2 or 3 in soul reaping

I've found that currently I am most comfortable with the following build for what I'm doing most at the moment, which is pve with henchmen:

1) Vampiric Gaze
2) Shadow Strike
3) Mark of Pain
4) Weaken Armor
5) Blood Renewal
6) Exploit Corpse
7) Empathy
8) Energy Tap

With these skills and my point distribution i was aiming for a balance of maximized damage draining enemy health and energy to grab for myself.

Empathy is there to allow me to cast it on weaker enemies and then switch to another target (I usually pair it with Weaken).

Energy Tap and Soul Reaping provide a small but fairly constant lift to energy reserves

It's not perfect by any means im sure but it's the most playable build I've made so far. I tried one concentrating on curses a while back but found it too fiddly to be reliable.

Mark of pain again lets me wear down multiple badguys if they are positioned right (A bit of moving around can force this)

moved to campfire.

as for better gear, you need to run level 20+ missions.

I used minions for about 2 levels at the start - they're fun but cost a lot to raise. I currently have no points in Death Magic. i think the next 'important skill' I will get is Plague Sending

In your opinion - thanks for backing it up with facts or even anecdotal evidence

In my experience I've turned the tide of battle that was going wrong in PvP more than a couple of times, and have found PvE no harder than with my warrior or ranger.

The trick is staying out of melee or dropping / discouraging someone fast if they do get that close

i'm playing one and i notice that in pvp i can be a serious pain in the ass to a monk. Put on a life transfer, backfire, mark of subversion, a couple nukes, shatter enchantment to remove his regen enchantments, and thow in an interupt and he should be dead. It's fun to watch it happen. The character doesn't really shine in the random pvp groups but with a little coordination you can really help out your team.

well im lvl 11 with my Necro Mes and im finding curses and illusion work well together. Sould barbs helps take down anything, just make sure most of the others spells you have are hexs or enchantment.

Death magic is must have for PvE.
i use:
1)animate bone minions
2)death nova
3)veratas sacrifice
4)life transfer{e} to heal myself
other spells are optional, u can chose what u want:
order of pain - if u have about 20 minions they all attack different targets, so this spell fits perfectly here
veratas aura/veratas gaze - if u face other necro with summons
from Mesmer i used domination magic a lot (backfire and chaos storm)
then switched to illusion, now back to dom. again
Ah, and if u cast order of pain too often u may need another healing spell, like strip enchantment

Keep in mind that this is for PvE
If you plan to go into pvp, curses, blood, domination well be better
like put soul barbs on their caster, then mesmer hexes and necro curses...
ah, and rend enchantments must have for pvp either.
gl and hf
