Try looking at a build revolving around Incendiary Arrows or Melandru's Arrows along with other buffs like JI or Conjure * and Favorable Winds. And of course, Tigers Fury.

how much AoE damage does a barrage+conjure ranger do anyway? any damage ranges i can expect because I have found the ranger to be extremely weak.

Barrage + Conjure would add like over 20+ atk on top your normal per shot. The best single target damages in my opinion are the Ranger/Mesmer with poison arrow + conjure phantams and/or phantom pain. You can put on like 9 to 10 arrows of degen and attack normally with tigers fury for quite a decent DPS.
Another good one is R/E with conjure fire + mark of rodgort but its heavy on the energy.
You could also just go pure ranger with with 12 wilderness and use kindle arrows to add on an extra 20 fire dmg per shot.
Rangers really aren't 'very good' at dealing high damage, their sort of 'okay' but can be great for DoT damages with things like poison, bleeding and incenediary arrows.

can a barrage ranger compare to a W/Mo using swords in terms of killing fast. This is because I am currently using a W/Mo and a Mo/Me to farm. If a ranger could be comparable in damage then I would rather use a ranger.

No not really, warriors most of the time do better damage and kill things faster than a ranger. Sword attack speeds makes alot of difference in killing compared to a ranger's bow but a Fragility build rangers are quite good for a sudden burst of high damage. Use the search there should be info on this build.

Against a Single Target I think you'll want Read the Wind or Kindle Arrows along with Penetrating Attack or Dual Shot respectivly.
Personally, I use Kindle Arrows with Penetrating Attack and Poison Arrow, which is a bad idea since the first 2 don't work together. It's still 30-40 damage from the Penetrating Attack and 10-17 from the Kindle Arrows, but I'm sure people can do much better both in single shots and over time.
In short: What Howling said. You're a low damage class, sorry.

Well, you could go with the tried and tested Fragility Ranger... often considered to be a good choice. (Ranger/Mesmer)
Core of the build, as I understand, is:
Fragility
Incendiary Arrows
Hunter's Shot
Tiger's Fury
Pin Down
Put no points in Wilderness Survival so that Incendiary Arrows has only 1 second length for the "on fire" condition. I really have yet to try this out, but I've heard good things for Arena-type matches. As far as team goes... Fragility Builds are nothing new... Large Single Target damage, not bad for GvG if you plan on Ninja'ing guild lords.
Main problem is their lack of sustainability.

I tried the Fragility build for a while. What he said is basically true: you can deal a lot of damage in a short time, but once Incendary Arrows wears off you just stand there and wish it would recharge.

The fragility build is good for a short-burst of sudden high damage, personally I'd use a quickening zephyr ritual when performing that combo coz incenediary arrows sucks in terms of recharge and lasting time. Most preps are 12s or 24s but this really annoys me that incenediary is only 8 and has recharge of 24...really takes the piss.

People on your own team tend to not like Quickening Zephyr though, which poses a problem.

It's not just the high damage – with Tiger's Fury and a fast-firing bow, you fire quickly enough with IA to have a fairly good chance of interrupting non-instant spells. I'm playing around with a group build that involves using two of these rangers (maybe) to mess up off-target monks (maybe), both running arcane mimicry for 8 seconds of IA, 2 seconds of reprep, another 8 seconds of IA (exactly the length of fragility at 12 illusion magic), then a 6 second wait until it becomes active again. This feels a bit like a rather silly house of cards, though, and hex removal would kill the damage potential, and probably quite a few other problems I'm overlooking.
