It all comes down to gear, attributes and skill sets. But then, that applies to any class. I think rangers "suck" to most people because they are probably one of the more complex classes to play.
I've gone head to head against rangers in pvp (hell, for 3 hours today there were very few times that there wasn't a ranger on the opposing team).
Some rangers were able to take my Mo/Wa out in a heart beat (seriously, I was down in a matter of a few seconds to a small number of them {I ran into about 4 who could do this}). While others I could run up to and slash the shit out of while losing only a smidgen of health. I would like to think my Mo/W a decent build with decent skill set.
It's how you play your character as well. I have a fraps recording (accidentally I might add) of one smart ranger who didn't initially attack and draw attention until they had laid some traps (and with the hectic pace of pvp, who's really watching that ranger lay his traps? if he's not attacking, then you go after the others who are right?). Then suddenly he'd pull a warrior from my team off by shooting him a few times and the warrior goes boom with the traps, the poison, and pin down. This was all caught in the corner of my screen as I was bringing down their mesmer. It's so funny to watch it play out over and over.
Rangers are far more deadly than anyone gives them credit for. I fear a seasoned player with a proper ranger build.
