w/e is indeed a good combo to use for hammering in pve. two good skill choices from the elem line are armor of earth and aftershock from earth magic. if you are tanking large mobs, armor of earth adds in a nice boost to your defense. earthshaker {e} + aftershock is still a really good combo to use for pve around large mobs.
the only problem you might encounter is running out of energy, but you should be able to take care of that too.

i looked up KD/AS builds on google and they say that you can either use ward against melee or armour of arth whick do you guys think is best?
also they say that crude swing is a good combo with earthshaker ...is it?
also yeti smash looks good would that work?
thanks

Crude Swing is good, but I think it may conflict with Aftershock. The point of using Earthshaker -> Crude Swing is to regain adrenalin, taking advantage of the fact that all of your opponents are disabled for 3 seconds in order to avoid the disadvantage of Crude Swing being easily interruptible. The problem is that Aftershock does max damage against KD'd foes, and has a big casting delay, so if you try Crude Swing and Aftershock together, one or the other is not going to hit while the enemies are still KD'd, and that's a Bad Thing.
A skillset involving aoe like Earthshaker, AS, and Crude, is only effective when facing many enemies at a time. In some missions you aren't going to find this kind of monster density, so you may be better off taking a single-target combo like Devastating Hammer, Crushing Blow, etc.

You can still use Aftershock in a single-target combo (that's what they do in PvP), but you won't be getting much bang for your buck.
Think about Ward vs. Armor this way: ward is a party buff, armor is a self-buff. If you're good at keeping aggro, bodyblocking, etc. then you can justify taking Armor of Earth, otherwise you're better off taking the ward.

I would suggest staying pure warrior for a Hammer build.

yeti smash is a good skill for an aoe hammer build.
also, armor of earth > ward vs melee in most cases. +armor protects you against everything (unless it is stripped, of course) whereas the ward only protects againt melee hits. also, ward is more energy intensive.

Monk is also a good subclass for hammer warriors. Holy/Stonesoul stike adds a nice chunk of damage to a kd'ed target and only costs 5 energy.

IB, Dev{e}, Bash, Crushing, Sprint, TTL, Heal, Res
16Hammer, 11tactics, 9strength. Stoneskins.
Works in PvP, and will pretty much work just as well in PvE especially TTL will grab the full 5 adren each time. Watch your energy though, only hit IB as a stance breaker and/or near death else its an energy drainer.
Normal Combo:
TTL > Hit > Hit > Dev > Crushing > Bash > Hit/IB (energy expenditure 10-15en)
