Question The three basic weapons.

When looking at the max damage for the weapons (Hammer, Sword, Axe) it seems Hammer is far better than the others. My question is why would anyone ever wish to use the other two weapons (Sword and Axe)? Is there some hidden speed value that they do not give us, eg. Sword is 1.00 and Hammer is a slower type of maybe 1.5 seconds? I am pretty new and still in the learning phases of all this.

Also there seems to be no distinction between level 20~ish weapons and those in Pre-Searing and on a chart it said the best axe in Chapter 1 (Meaning Prophecies I think, and "Sickle") was found in Pre-Searing? That seems to early in the game to obtain the best weapon...

Hammers hit every 1.75 seconds. axe/sword is 1.33.

Go read up on anything and everything you have questions on, then come back here and ask.

BTW, sickles are just one of the rarest and most expensive weapons. Weapon types make no difference, except for bows and attack type.

Hammers have the highest DPS. If all you want to do is use no skills and just hit things, do Hammer.

Hammers do a lot of Weakness and Knockdown

Swords excel at conditions, look at Sever, Gash, Hamstring.

Then there's Axes, which excel at Deep Wound and Damage, and multi-target.

Take all of a weapons skills into thought when choosing which type you will excel in. While sword may have the lowest raw DPS, I use it often for it's Bleeding, Deep Wound, and other handsome abilities (SunMoon/DragonSlash anyone?)

Loshi practically summed it all up.

You also get the bonus of using a shield with swords/axes, however swords can excel at multi-target and there's an adrenaline based hamstring-like skill with axes.
