Real SY damage reduction?
How much damage really gets through SY?
I know that the 100 bonus armor do about 80% damage reductions, this is not what I am talking about.
The point is that this only applies to armor dependent damage.
So Elementalists damage is reduced by 80% but that's about the only class against which SY is that effective. All melee chars as well as Necromancers/Mesmers and so on have armor ignoring skills which completely ignore SY.
The most important part here would be the melee chars I think. Whats the fraction of armor ignoring damage in their attacks? Auto attack damage is reduced, skill damage is not, but I have no idea what this actually means in damage.
So, on average in a common hard mode area, how much damage reduction does SY really give? It's certainly a lot less then the 80%, but how much?

Only real threat I've faced that SY couldn't stand up to was mass E Surge foes, like roaring ethers, but in that case you got TNTF....
Thing is SY! will reduce all the hurty damage that armor can affect and leave your healers better able to defend against everything else.

40AL = 50%
40AL = 50%
20AL = 25%
75% will come from the two 40AL's, and from the 20AL will come 12.5%, making 87.5% reduction... ofcourse, this was a quick overview so it's probably inaccurate.

The major chunk of physical damage from most HM enemies comes not from the +bonus on their skills (half of them don't even spam decent skills), but from high weapon attribute levels on high-level monsters combined with perma-IAS and IMS. This is why weakness in sab/discord owns them so badly (weakness only lowers base damage.) Basically the only thing SY won't handle is mesmers and some necros.

I think wiki says 82.32%. It's something close to that anyway.
Taking in all types of damage though, it's still really useful. I don't think it's really possible to judge how much (in percent) it's actually going to help in any given area.

There is no better skill in the game for protecting your party, except versus armor-ignoring damage. As is the case with just about everything, you can't depend solely on just one skill.
SY does nothing to protect you from degen.
SY does nothing to protect the person who is shouting it.
SY does nothing to protect you from life-stealing.
However, an SY spammer in your party takes tons of pressure off your monks. Anyone who has ever monked in a party with a godmode para will swear by the benefits provided.

Save Yourselves, it's a shout that gives your party (excluding you)+100 armor for x seconds... It's godly, and rapes HM!

While there is some armor ignoring damage, the benefits of the 80+% reduction is so huge that it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I mean what are the mobs going to do, degen and life steal you to death?

Max Degen being -10 pips showing (or -20hp/sec), it's still going to take 31.75 seconds to Degen my Warrior out of hp. If my Monks/Support don't do their job for 31.75 seconds, it's time to find new ones, lol.
Let's just put it this way, OP. My wife plays an Ele. If we roll HM and I don't load up DSlash+SY!, she gets downright pissy. I would load up Erf Shakur more often, but the wife doesn't really like to wait around for me to get pre-protted and ball up enemies. She'd rather deal with scatter and chaos while buffed with +100al.
