Is It Necessary?
Am I totally clueless, or is something wrong with other people? I really enjoy playing my warrior, but it seems that when I PUG Zaishen bounties and missions everybody wants me to run a build with defy + endure pain, asking for a "tank." I guess that's cool if we really want to tank and spank a dungeon or something, but so far it seems like that rarely occurs. It's really hard to get ahead of the group and draw the aggro to myself when we have a spirit spammer keeping step with me and moving spirits to where I am. It seems to me that as a warrior, I become the blame magnet when something goes wrong. Am I missing something? Other than avoiding PUGs altogether, What can I do to improve my PUGging experience?

I play as a warrior mainly as well, and I've come across some groups that insist I play D. Slash/SY! spammer, and other will insist I play a Defy Pain build screaming it is the best. I agree with you that in general PvE, tanking isn't effective. If you really want to PUG, only thing you can do is agree or find a different group and hope for the best.

Those skills are terrible. If you wanna ball a mob you just need PS and maybe a cover.
If they are telling you to bring those skills, they probably don't know what they are doing. Find another group.

Explain to them that you would rather be useful and deal damage then stand there doing nothing. Just have your pet monkey bring Prot Spirit and "tank" away.

I just did the ZB in HM with a group and nobody complained. I just went with all knights armor, dolayk sig and 1 earth skill that gives armor but makes you move slower.
Yes I know it's hard to tank with 3 enemies running past you. They are trying to hit softer targets than you, and you are expected to hold the line.
But nobody had a complaint and we didn't wipe. Even got an elite rit tome out of it, though the chest sucked.
Most people were just happy to have a solid rock to cast RoJ on, so long as you hold onto one monster or position, people can stack their attacks on.

I generally don't mind running the D.Slash/SY! spammer as it at least allows me some leeway with positioning and gives me an active role.
Being a Defy Pain doorstop just isn't necessary in 95% of situations. Usually I just bypass the problem by only playing with guildies, but I did do the recent Kanaxai and Stygian Lord bounties with pugs and didn't get any such requests.
Either people are learning, or those areas are high end enough that the people in them know better.

IMO the best thing to do is to find a better group. Those aren't good skills and there are better things a warrior can be doing... like killing stuff.

Best thing to do is Hero Hench it with the build you want to use.

Avoiding PUGs is about the only thing you can do. MAYBE start the PUG instead of join one, then you can 'lead' the team the way you want. But typically you will still end up with people who don't know how to play. If you are tanking, and the team doesn't let you control aggro, then you aren't helping the team, and it isn't your fault. So the problem is the people not knowing how to play with that team setup. So either make perfectly clear how the team is designed, and be sure each member is aware and able to play their role, or kick them. I stopped PUGing when I found out how to use this marvelous thing called Guild Chat. When that doesn't work, I know how to make use of the heroes and hench.

Try forming your own groups. Getting some guildies to play the main roles is a good way to get started. The roles that aren't essential or are somewhat idiotproof (like SoS Rit) can be filled in with random people.
