Default Caster weapon on a ritualist.

Heya

I've got a question. Is an caster weapon usefull on a ritualist? Since they dont have much enchantments it maybe would be better to take an wand/stave as weapon instead of a caster weapon, or are there nice builds with some enchantments in it where an caster weapon is usefull?

Just.

Could use +5e and a bonus armor suffix. (Examples: +5AR suffix, +7 vs physical, +7 vs elemental.)

So what you mean is just an spear with +5 energy and then +7 armor vs Physical/Elemental?

If you want +20% enchantment length it's more beneficial to use a 40/20/20 2H staff (twice HCT <attribute> 20%,HSR 20%, 20% enchanting). If you don't use enchantments a martial weapon mixed with a fokus is inferior to a 40/40 set (some exceptions exists).
A martial weapon is usually used together with a shield to get as much additional armor and health as possible.

Also, keep in mind that you can change your weapon very rapidly during a fight: E.g. if you use long lasting enchantments, you can switch to a weapon set with +20% enchantment, and afterwards to a weapon set with +armor instead; this way, you can get the boni of both worlds.

I like having a +5 energy with a +30 weapon and a shield with +30/armor for sticky situations. Otherwise, I generallly use my staves/wands/focus weapons for the faster casting/recharge.

Yeah, or use a +30 mod. But there really is no need for a caster weapon on a rit, I recommend using a 40/40 set and a 20/20 staff as an alternate when in need for energy.

There is no need for a caster weapon for a rit other than a 40/40 switch for painful bond. Much better would be the +5e +30 spear and +30 shield with a mod.

You don't need to worry about energy if you are using Spirit Siphon. You will have more than enough energy than you can ever use.

With good technique and the extra +hp and armor, you should be pretty invulnerable in HM unless you get spiked hard.

A mod to make enchantments last longer could be useful for a 330 ritualist, for spells like protective spirit and spirit bond. Though 40/40 would also be useful, to make vengeful was khanhei refresh faster.

iirc when reading the useage description on pvx for this build it actually reccomends this.

Yes the extra length of PS is nice, but the 40/40 is so much better. You can always refresh the PS with ease, but not so with the VwK.

I tend to use a lot of PvE spells like pain inverter, summon spirits or whatnot, so the untyped HCT and HSR mods are what I tend to go for.

Seconded.

Rit's really don't need caster sets because resto builds have quick recharging spells and spirits are strong enough to get by without them.

The only reason I would go into 40/40 is if I were to spec heavily into channeling skills.

I understand everything in this thread but this post.

As a new GW player, anyone mind explaining what a +30 weapon is? :P

So basically though, a Shield and a Spear is good for a Rit then? Or would Axe/Sword/Shield be better?

+30 health. Swords, Axes, and Spears are all capable of carrying the same mods, so based on that they are identical, but Spears are better since they are ranged and can be used to trigger Mark of Pain/Barbs/whatever physical buffs are flying around when they aren't casting. It's also good if you accidentally select an enemy and press the space bar; you won't go running forward to attack.

Got it thanks.

Still learning most of these acronyms, sucks when you come in at the very end and everyone already has a set language used to communicate everything xD

As for shields, are there specific ones that don't have a requirement? Most of the ones I can find have requirements of some sort, usually tactics, motivation or command.

*The only shields without requirements are those that have a very low AL (probably not much higher than 3).

You can do one of two things to fix this:

1) Get a max AL shield and forget about the req. It only affects what it is listed next to, in this case, the AL. If you don't meet the req, you'll only get half the armor (or energy, if we were talking about focus items), but the other bonuses will have their full effect.
2) Get a shield with a req that you're going to put points into. As a Rit, you probably won't ever put points into those attributes, with some obscure exceptions. Monks do this in PvP with Tactics shields (they take Tactics for the defensive stances), for example.

I don't know why you'd be the target of damage constantly unless you were up in the frontlines, in which case you are doing something wrong. When I run restoration magic, I'm on my 40/40 set constantly unless I'm the target of damage, which isn't often, since controlling monster aggro isn't that hard.

You'd be the target because PUG frontliners like to mimic bad football teams and let everyone waltz past our defenses. This happens somewhat often and its best to be prepared.

40/40 restoration isn't the same as 40/40 channeling. Restoration has a clear and significant advantage using the 40/40 while 40/40 channeling has marginal benefits. So marginal that a 40/40 should be used as a switch or not used at all. Shield and spear has far more uses compared to the 40/40 on a SoS rit adn thus should always be the default set.

My apologies then. I was under the impression that people meant that caster sets in general are not useful on ritualists, since a person posted earlier that he thought it was not very beneficial when running restoration. I agree with you about a SoS rit.

Why wouldn't you run a 40/40 if you're a resto rit?
