Necros are one of the more versatile professions in the game, they can do armour ignoring damage and life-steal, provide great support by areas of safety with well spells, or provide energy to other players with Blood Magic. They can raise minions and cause conditions with Death Magic, often call a Minion Master, they can deal huge amounts of damage via minions. Or they can hex and degen an enemy to death with Curses, often causing some very interesting effects.
Necros are a very interesting and powerful class, but are very indirect with their methods, some of their skills open up into some great combos. Necros, like Mesmers require quite a lot of skill to be truly powerful, but played right and they can be devastating.

They don't require as much skill to play anymore. About anyone can play a minion Master.. you need about 4 skills, 16 Deathmagic, and you're set..
But as the person above already said, they are pretty versatile..
If used right, they can shut any melee/ranged character easily down, damage deal and 'support tank' with Minions..
Also, Unsure if it has been nerved, but with certain skill combo's (all triggered and active) you can even surpass the damage output of an elementalist, because most Necromancer (Like mesmer skills) are unaffected by armor class

a minion master will easily outdamage a ele, with suffiecent minions, plus tankage from the minions too...
really potent...
necros are better at damage over time...

N/R spinal shivers with winter = ultimate interrupter
SS - nuker
Blood (spike) - high single target damage + self heal
Bip - battery
Spoil Victor - another (recently popular) blood build
55 - solo farmer
MM - the staple build of most groups
and probably a few more. Necro is good for just about anything. Some even make an N/E nuker.

Takes Mesmer as a secondary and you can make a highly efficient degen necro using Curses and Illusion.
Necro is also a self sufficient profession, you can easily go through the whole game without using your secondary profession.

It is true it doesn't take a lot of skills to play a MM, but it takes a lot to play a GOOD MM.

That sparks my interest, mind sharing the build? Do you use a Bow? I know it's not exactly the top dog damage output/ownage build, but I like oddball builds (like Mo/R pet smiter etc.). Plus, Spinal Shiver is about the best nonelite skill there is.

Back to the OP...What place are you carrying out your measurements? PvE? PvP?

It does? All you need is 16 death, high soul reaping, and these skills:
Blood of the Master
Animate Bone Fiend

Oh look, you're done. As long as you can not over aggro you're a "good" minion master.
I don't see where any skill comes in at all, this is why most of us have banished the MM build to something run by Olias.

Necros are also very good at shutdown skills. With a combination of energy degen, anti-melee, anti caster, and anti-shout skills, a necro is pretty versatile at reducing the effectiveness of enemies.

Try staying alive with OOU and Botm without the help of a monk.
And no Vamp horrors.

That is a basic MM build, it's like saying playing Blood Degen is just spamming blood skills and playing SS is just spamming SS all over the place.

Necros is a very self-sufficient class, they offer armor ignoring damage and control/protection by using the corpses of fallen enemies. They can limit the capabilities of opponents by cursing them and they keep themselves alive by sucking the blood out of their foes.

Why? Even henchmen monk heal you. I'd rather take Mark of Pain than Order of Undeath.

Hmmm could have fooled me.
I guess I missed out somewhere along the way on the strategicallyism. These builds in discussion are almost as hard as playing a Barrage ranger.

Necros are good for two things for the most part in PvE: Minions (Animate Bone Fiend) and Orders (Order of Pain). The rest is fluff in my experience, none of it has really blown me away.
Peace,

Mark of Pain could work like orders, but is a real issue in PvE due to the speed in which mobs die, sadly.
Who says MMs have to be necros? What about Rits? Gift of Creation+Boon of Creation+Jagged Bones+Bone Minions+Explosive Creation.
Yeah, see what happens? It's like a heal party when you use Bone Minions, and no energy issues whatsoever without Explosive Creation. Wish Nova had a faster cast though, then I'd junk EC =/
Minion Bombing isn't hard, but it does take something beyond mindless spamming of bone fiends, which is pretty effective as well (sadly).

Spiteful Spirit is the marquee elite of the Curses line. Arcane Echo it and cover it with Parasitic Bond, and spend the rest of your skill bar on mesmer interrupts (and/or Spinal Shivers) or something.

Necromancers are noramally a "support" class, either doing degeneration damage, keeping the rest of the party energized, keeping the enemies off the party with minions, or making the enemies just plain weaker.
They can also be damage dealers with the creation on blood spike and spiteful spirit builds.
i just restated what everyone else said didn't i?

Minion Masters are IMO pretty offensive.

True, although I've know a few who were downright charming.
SS necros do a lot of damage too.
