Ah, the good o'l days of Diablo 2, haha and then the huge ban came from that one maphack during the 1.11 patch that completely raped 3/4 of the players on diablo . Anyways, onto your question! Definately start in prophecies first with your necro. It's a lot easier for you to learn and a lot easier to kill monsters. The monsters in Prophecies are ALOT easier to kill than in Nightfall and you'll benefit from starting low and working your way up. Furthermore, i recommend playing as a Curse or Minion Master Necromancer as they completely rock PVE. Have fun.

Proly MM-ing would be your best bet. It's fairly D2-like. Take some damage dealer, raise minions, keep em alive. O'course keep youself alive, too. Fiends + Blood of the Master is the core of your MM build, rest is pretty much up to you but I recommend Dark Bond, Signet of Lost Souls, and a back-up minion like Bone Horrors. You can play around with the rest. I'm currently running the above-mentioned skills and Reaper's Mark as elite + Rotting Flesh as initial damage. But you can do a ton of things.

Animate Bone Fiend, Blood of the Master, six skills that really don't matter.
Peace,

Welcome to GW.
In the beginning of Prophecies, I would not suggest you go with MM (minion master). The reason is because you do not have a lot of energy, skills, attribute points, or experience in maintaining an army. Once you hit level 15 or so, then MM. Many unexperienced MMs will sacrifice themselves to death.
Unlike in Diablo 2, your minions do not regenerate, instead, they have health DEgeneration. So, instead of healing wounds over time, they take more, and more damage over time.
You must continually heal them, or they die (with our without being damaged by other monsters).
Also, there are no icons for minions, so you must make sure that you look at all of your minions to see who needs healing (Blood of the Master will heal ALL minons, but you must lose some of your own life to do so).
In the beginning of Prophecies (or anywhere else), blood magic is the easiest to use, as you just cast spells on target foes and get healed (usually) while they take damage.
Overall, MMing is the easiest overall build as Hella Good has said.
Good luck and have fun.

Animate Bone Fiend= skill you can't get until the jungle in Prophecies.
However, I agree with Pick Me....wait until level 15 or later to MM. I actually never went MM except in a couple of circumstances where I was asked to specifically by the group leader. I usually went with degens and Well of Blood on my skillbar.

i aslo ended up here after diablo 2, and my first character was a Blood necro with bone minions as shock troops i really enjoyed it, and i think with the skills give to you at the start of the game its one of the easiest to play. although i do recommend curses when your further in the game and have a larger skill selection.
