Wail of Doom (PvE)
Hi all --
I am wondering why this skill is so unpopular with PvE Necro's?
I have been reading these forums for a while and and looking at various build websites, and I never see builds which use this elite. From a shutdown prospective, it would seem to be sorta useful. Granted it does not do damage, but I can imagine that it could cause certain professions real big problems, making killing them easier. I am interested in hearing your thoughts.
Wyler.

From the standpoint of a Necro that usually runs a cursing build, i would much rather invest in an Elite like SS or Corrupt Enchantment. Wail is the most extreme case of an instance specific skill, i.e. effective only on a select few boss's, imo. The life sac, coupled with the long recharge and short duration make it relatively useless for general PvE usage.

I ran it for a while on a hero before they changed it to try and get necros back into PvP. Used to be:
Sacrifice 10% Health, and target foe is interrupted. If target foe was attacking, all of that foe's attack skills are disabled for 5...20 seconds.
As for PvE use now it'd be useful to shut down a HM monk for a few very short seconds. Maybe it'd have a use on a hero to manually cast on a monk, but TBH I'd rather take an always useful elite like [Jagged Bones], [Discord], [Spiteful Spirit], etc.

Because the only time it's really usefull is on bosses, and most of them have an inherent 1/2 hexes duration. 2 seconds wail of doom, you better off just take a mesmer/ranger and shut it down

While nice to have a good shut down of the more annoying enemies (like healers and heavy damage dealers) I'd rather have my necro doing what he does best-armor ignoring damage.
Wail of Doom (for me at least) is only really used on Duncan in Slaver's.

Single target shutdown is pretty useless in PvE. Most monsters aren't worth shutting down when you can kill them just as easily. The few that are with shutting down tend to have some aspect that makes shutdown ineffective, like half curse duration on bosses.

I guess Im the odd-man-out in this thread. Wail has been pretty much, stapled to my bar, even before its current form. After the change to what it is now, all three of my necro heros use it as well. While it does last only 2 seconds on bosses, it works dam well against everyone else. In cases like that, I tend to target the bosses myself and use it against their most damaging skills while the rest of my party wipe out the bosses' mob. Next thing you know, 2 seconds can become as long as 8 seconds when the boss is left all alone.
With that said, no one can efficiently upkeep hexes or conditions on foes better than the AI. They never cast the same hex or condition twice on a single foe so they dont waste energy doing it. My heros and I are all equipped with 3 of the same skills; Enfeebling Blood, Reckless Haste, and Wail Of Doom. And I will tell you now that my monks never had it so easy. I sometimes just sit back and watch with amazement as my physicals squash enemy casters while the rest of us never really have to worry about pressure from melee.

its boring. there, i said it. It may be an awesam skill in principle but just mindlessly spamming it on recharge to not see any REAL results, is crap. For instace [Spiteful spirit][Feast Of Corruption][Corrupt enchantment][Discord] they all actually do something providing theyre not removed (excluding FoC). WoD its just a case of, oh look hes not hurting me Oh shit he is now.wheres the fun in that? Where-as the 4 i listed actually cause near max degen, a shedload of damage, make numbers come up, which is fun
WoD = booooooooring :/

If WoD was made to be AoE in PvE, then it might be worth using (sorta like enfeebling blood, cept for casters too).

i tried it out a couple of times ,its quite nice to see an ele boss doing crap dmg in hm ,insted of insta wipe dmg,as for curses altho many people like ss so much i dont find it that efective anymore because many times the mob dies before the ss hero even gets to hex the target

WoD in pve isn't popular because quite frankly single target shutdown for 4 seconds really isn't as useful in pve as say armor ignoring aoe damage. It's an amazing skill for organized pvp however (what's better than rendering a foe helpless just as they're spiked?), which I'm quite certain was the idea behind the change.
