Choose whatever attributes you like best, give them each a try specifically of those attributes. But remember do NOT spread out. I wouldn't be surprised if you are doing that, a lot of new players do.
Also, if you want help, might be wise to post your build. Press k, click on the disk next to "Profession", go to Template Code, highlight the code, ctrl+C, then paste it on wiki in [build;<paste build here>] format so that we can see your attributes and skills.

One of the very important aspects of this game is a balance between offense, defense and shutdown. In the low areas, one Monk (Healer Henchman) should be able to keep your party alive, presuming you are not trying to fight too many of them at once. The other two henchmen should be geared towards damage.
Skill-wise, you should specialize in curses OR blood magic OR death magic, as well as soul reaping (SR is the only attribute you will always use). Try to invest in the attributes you have the most skills of, and try to get more skills by doing quests and buying them from Skill Traders.
It depends on your playstyle as to what kind of necro you'll want to run. The only way to find out is through practice.

My recommendation is that you got to town....drop every attribute to zero first so that you have no assigned attributes. Now after doing that, dump everything you have into Curses until it will not go higher. Then put whats left into Soul Reaping. If you have any attribute points left after that put them into protection or healing...whichever you prefere to carry more.
If you have these skills then they will be most useful for you....load up [skill]Enfeeble[/skill] [skill]Insidious Parasite[/skill] [skill]Parasitic Bond[/skill]

Thanks for your help guys.
I had been putting my points into Blood Magic (37 used, 8 unused points), and attacking mainly with Dact Pact while regaining health with Vampiric Touch, Vampiric Gaze, Lift Siphon and Blood Renewal.
I'm a long time WoW player and that's why I mistakenly referred to the attributes as talent points. I chose necromancer because I thought it would be similar to the warlock class.
I'm not a huge fan of death magic because the undead creatures don't last very long.
I'll keep experimenting!
One more question, are the NPCs in my party of the highest level possible? For example, I was fighting the level 8 enemies with level 6 help.
I don't have enfeeblement or soul reaping? Is that expansion or do I need to buy it?

Soul Reaping is your primary attribute, not a skill What it does is give you energy back when enemies die, the more points in it the more energy you get back, so it's good whether you are using skills from it or not. Enfeeble you won't be able to get until you're a bit farther in the game.

Hi, welcome to guildwars. :-D To your henchman question if you get the henchman from the outpost they are the max level you can get them at for that area. And for undead they do tend to have a "short" lifespan but the Blood Attribute spell "Blood of the Master" heals all the undead at once so they are useable and monks heal them too. If you decide to experiment remember that your Level in Death Magic is also used to determine the undeads level, hp, ect. A head piece that is aspected to death and another attribute you use would be best as you can change them out at an outpost as you play around with your build. Experimenting is the best way to see what you like best and you can keep the other armor piece(s) in your storage (if you decide to go this way). If you need help you may PM me as well in game Angil Ath Aririd is my main character, but feel free to pm me under my others. In case you havent realized it yet being new. Pressing N on the keyboard will bring up your contacts. Put a name under the friend list and press enter. If anyone is on line their name will appear in the online list. And if they are on under one of their others that name will be in listed as well. Click on Icon of the person and choose "whisper." And your good to go.
Also a good way to check is go to the armor person in Ascalon and see what armor level he is crafting and compare it to what you have if its better that could also be a reason for having some trouble in the explorable areas.

Yes I would suggest getting yourself some armor Droknar's Forge first. Get a run there and then find the armor NPC and get the max armor for your profession.
Then farm for some gold.
Where? Try farming Charr Carvings for a while. i suggest this cause I do the same. You should be able to collect a small sum of gold to pay for your armor and a decent weapon to boot.
It might also be very helpful to try joining a guild as they will help you to decide what build is good for what area. There is no one magical build that will do for every profession but Necro is a back line player where by you can raise minions to kill things and take agro for you.
So try and kill stuff that is within 3 lvl's below yourself. Also do not forget to do all of the secondary quests as these will net you gold (when you kill stuff) and experience (when completing the task) and give you a sense of accomplishment as you do so.
You can sell your charr carvings for around 30-50 gold each. I solo my runs and average 25-30 carvings per run. So I average 2,000 gold per run in around 10 minutes for my war build. Over 10K per hour is around the regular for a gold farmer.
Hope this is useful

To the OP (original poster) - it's hard to say what you should do since I don't know what skills you have atm, or have access to. I don't think you have enough to do a minion master, or any specific type of build. So mostly, I would suggest you concentrate on Curses and AoE damage (Area of Effect - skills that do damage to a bunch of enemies.)
Be sure to put a good amount of attribute points into Soul Reaping as this is your main source of energy.
Don't put any more than just left-over points into monk attributes - you shouldn't be trying to be a monk other than using [Resurrect] (or [Rebirth]) and maybe a small self heal. Let the Henchie monks do the heal/prot.

As every Guy knows ,starting out can be a problem re gold, skills ect
So as your a level 10.prof only ...take every quest that surrounds Ascalon not only will you level you will obtain new skills as you go
This is a learning curve re your level so take your time.look in places within the city and outposts for skill quests
Nobody came into this game knowing all as some says look for a Guild that as a new player they may assist you in some areas
Necros are good and fun to play in proficies as this is your only campaign
Just look at the section in its profession and have a little read up on it..This is to give you an insight on a necro or any other profession you have.
Yes Armour playS an inportant role but for the time being check and obtain better armour if its starter you have its not to exp in Ascalon
Materials can be exchanged also at collectors for better armour if gold level is low. What you may be seeing is guys running with better armour and low level
Just they have been playing longer and have ammased gold ect..Your time will come also when you have cash
So enjoy the game and use the lower level to learn your professionand look after energy dont cast large skills as much and soul reaping helps you along
Give me a call also if you get stuck and may need a little help , still a lot of guys out there who will help you along to learn

I disagree with the poster that said to get a run to Droks. If this is your first character you don't need it. Running to Droks is skipping most of the game. It's a good way to max out characters quickly if you really don't care about the storyline and it's your 3rd or 4th character thru the game and you just want a particular armor or skill. It's not a good idea for first characters.
Most posters here have already given you good suggestions for skills. I don't think anyone has mentioned armor yet. If they did, I missed it. At this point, you have armor available in Ascalon and Piken's Square. Ignore the armor in Piken's Square, it's junk. You want to buy the higher stats armor in Ascalon. It's not great, but it's better than starter armor and it's plenty effective for the monsters you're fighting around ascalon.
If you haven't already, head on over to wiki and read up on armor and weapons. There are some good articles there that will explain the rune system, insignias and inscriptions better than I can.

Nooooooooooooo... Do this on your fifth character, not now. Prophecies is meant to be enjoyed slowly (compared to other GW chapters). Whenever you reach a new outpost, check all the NPCs for an armor crafter and upgrade your gear (you said you may still have starter gear). Play around with skills and find combinations you like.
Necro is a fun class to play. As a N/Mo with [skill]Blood of the Master[/skill] and [skill]Heal Area[/skill] , minions will last as long as you want them too.
Welcome and have fun

To the OP go blood in the beginning of the game forget about MM.you can get by with al15 armour with a vitae or vigor no need for runes yet.You can use resserect as it is free.I would suggest doing the missions and forget about going through Diessia Lowlands for short cuts.
