Warrior or Monk
Heyhey,
School is almost over, and sadly, I'm stuck on the stage where I'm trying to decide what class I want to play. I think I've narrowed it down to a warrior or a monk, W/E for the former, and Mo/Me for the latter.
Anyways, I was just wondering which class you guys think is more fun and versatile. I'm mainly looking towards PvP as opposed to PvE, so the PvE aspects won't matter as much to me, although it could still count.
I do realize I'm posting this in the warrior forums, but I'll be posting in both the warrior and the monk forums to look for varying perspectives. I'd prefer that you have played both professions when commenting on them, but if you've only played one, your thoughts are very much appreciated as well.
So, whatever you have to say, I'm all ears.
Thanks a bunch!
-Glydan

I don't play nearly enough to be able to keep two characters up. =(
And uh, this may just be a flaw of mine, but I like to have a main character that has a specific name, hehe.
Ultimately, I think I might end up playing both, I'm trying to settle on a main character though.

monk is fun for farming, and running (mo/r spellbreaker runner) and healing, proting, even smiting, hehe
warriors are great for damage, and running, but can't farm as well

If you don't play enough to keep two characters up, then you probably won't have enough time to get one PvP ready at a competitive level. Might as well choose one that you'll like in PvE and then roll up PvP-only characters. Unless when you talk about PvP you're referring to AB or RA, then it really doesn't matter how ready your character is, so go warrior

I have a warrior and monk, but don't play my monk anymore.
You may or may not enjoy playing a warrior in pvp depending on the kind of pvp you do. It's very hard to play a warrior in unorganized pvp such as RA, AB, etc....since monks are usually not there to back you up, there's usually not much you can do when you get hexed with all kinds of anti-attack stuff. If you do TA, GVG, etc, then it's a whole different story. Warriors are pretty common in organized pvp because of the great pressure they can put on enemy monks. Besides pressure, they also spike well.
As for monks in pvp, it's very tough. Be prepared to go up against builds that a few would call an "anti-monk build". You gotta be able to deal with pressure cause you'll get loads of it. I've seen a few people say that monking in pvp can be a tad bit stressful. If you're the kind that likes a hard challenge, then you'll love being a monk in pvp.
As for pve (ill make this short), monks are wanted in pretty much every group (just like in pvp). If you pug, be prepared to deal with out of control players. As long as your team has a brain, monking in pve is alot easier. It's hard to find a group as a warrior cause so many people play them, but that doesn't make them useless.....they're very good at single target damage. They don't need energy to function so in long fights, a warrior with a high-offense build can help the party out pretty well.

Hmm... Good choice on them 2, actually. Both of them are challenging, rewarding PvP classes... Both of them are pretty popular (well, I prefer Mo/E for Glyph of Lesser Energy...) and should have little trouble finding a place in a team.
Well, I doubt I could help you much...
But ask yourself - do you wanna kill stuff? Or heal stuff?

Play a Monk. That way when you play in RA, you know you're gonna have a Monk on your team .
Seriously though, I find that if you're playing through Prophecies, it takes a while to get 'intense'. Sometimes, usually before the Maguuma Jungle, the easy stuff seems a bit boring, even when you are playing a key role. However, if you're playing a Monk, the pressures always on and it's much, much more intense.
I still prefer to kill stuff though I vote Warrior!

Play monk you will rarely be short of a grp. Monks are good farmers too. Ask the bot-shepards how much gold they have sold on ebay via monk bot farm.

I play 3 classes mainly:
Warrior, Ranger and Monk. (I dabble in all apart from mes and ele)
My war was my first char that got anywhere, and he has been involved in all areas of the game. He played PVP (RA, TA a lil HA, and a GVG or 2) and i have had many a complement from my party members.
Monk on the other hand is one of my newer characters. While he is new i enjoy playing him. The reason i enjoy monk is coz (dont judge me) i am a control freak. Whenever i monk, people listen to my input because if they dont they arent gonna get the lifesaving. Warrior however... i get the reaction "noob warrior, doesnt know what hes talking about, Stupid Wammo".
Thats my experience with both classes and both have finished all three campaigns.
Now which would be better:
Lets start with pros and cons
Warrior Pros:
High armor therefore longer life
Large Variation in playability (Axe, Hammer, Sword even Spear and Scythe if u want)
Decent Damage output in pressure or spike format.
IMO Have some of the sweetest looking armor and weapons
Cons:
Hard to get into parties due to excess supply
Stereotyped "Noob Wammo" Statements
Again due to excess supply, there is higher demand for their items therefor more costly weapons.
I would rate warriors as a 8/10 in fun department, 7/10 in utitlity department,Challenge department 7/10 and 1/10 in the uniqueness department.
Monk Pros:
Popular Class for all areas of the game
Great farming applications
Can provide a challenge that other classes fail to give
Also have nice armors
Monk Cons
High population class, therefore again weapons are expensive, but not 2 the same extent as warriors
Primary Target: You will often get targeted by the AI in PVe and the enemy in PVP
If u screw up, u get the whole blame. If a random ally in PVE goes and aggros another mob, and some people in ur party die, whos to blame??? Not the the ally that aggrod, but u, for not being able to keep 7 other people alive from high damage foes, while trying not to die urself.
Fun Department: 6-7/10
Challenge Department 10/10
Utility Department 10/10
Uniqueness Department 7/10
As an afternote, I would suggest u make a pvp version of both and go play maybe an hour or 2 of each in RA. For starters, u may find that u dont enjoy the whacking of a warrior, and like spellcasters (my friends are like that alot), or u may find that u dont like the target heal repeat of a monk. All depends on you.
Hope i helped, if u have any other questions gimme a shout

Thanks a bunch Precise! I think that's exactly what I'm going to do.
Tomorrow, I have two exams to do, so I have to study now, but other the weekend, I think I'll probably try out both classes in PvP and see how I feel about them.
