gee,,, that seems like a pretty good idea. not the entire build, but the Boon Prot thing. It seems like some good practice. i just want to work out how to boon prot using ZB. i like the idea of protting, but ZB just doesn;t heal the way that i am used to under WoH or HB.

anyway, good idea. not the best build, but looks good to try. i am kind of looking for something radically different in terms of healing builds for GW/s

Well the build was not meant to be good, its meant to teach.

Anyway, if you want to try something different try one of these. I like using them in PvE

Healers Covenant, Vig Spirit Dkiss, P Spirit, Divine intervention, SS, SM, CoP

OwAS0YIT+DbENg2DyVRgQgsE

Scibe's insight, SoD, RoF, SB,Dismiss, Deny Hexes, Remedy signet, Divine boon

OwkS8YIPlkZiWkSzRi3b6vH

Defender's Zeal, SoD, RoD, SC, SH, judge's intervention, Smiter's boon, Divine boon

OwAS4YIPlE8qbFTzRo+ukqP

As far as ZB boon prot, may something like this

10+1+1 Divine, 11+1 Prot, 10 inspiration
ZB, RoF, Guardian, PS, Dismiss, Revealed Hex, Ether Signet, Divine boon.

Have not tested it, but it should work.

well... to be honest, i tried out Boon Prot in FA yesterday and i found that the only way to run it properly with great heals and proper energy management is with ZB. if you use ZB correctly, it only costs 5e and heals for around 290HP (depending on how many points you have in Divine and Prot ofc). i find the heal is pretty much comparable to WoH but with the added bonus of having the rest of your attributes high in Prot instead of Heal.

i found that careful selection of when to use Boon and when not helps. i was playing around with GoLE (Mo/E) which can lead to some pretty nice energy gains when coupled with ZB.

In terms of Boon Healing... i have been experimenting with Healers Boon, Divine Boon with Patient Spirit and Dwayna's Kiss on my bar. was throwing out some mega mega heals. have to be careful how often to use your heals tho.... found that your emergency heal is casting patient on yourself and Contemplation of Purity for 480Hp +++ heal and remove 3 hexes and 3 conditions. once again, energy management was ok here if using GoLE, but just getting used to only healing people with around 200Hp so as to not over heal as most often my heals were in the order of +300hp. (+54 Divine Boon + 45 Divine Favor + 177 Patient Spirit and sometimes up to +400Hp for Dwyana's kiss depending on how many enchants and hexes the person had).

I think that Divine Boon can be a great tool for starting monks (<12month experience), but only after they learn the basics and can work with the more conventional WoH hybrid builds or have learned how to infuse.

---------------------
My one peice of advice to learning monks is to learn 2 INFOOOZE. try monking in PVE and low level PVP (AB / FA / JQ) with the HB build from Hero's Ascent. It is the one thing that took me from being a WoH noob to the next level of monking. As a practice take only 4 skills on your bar...

1. Patient Spirit, Dwanya's Kiss, Healers Boon (e), Infuse. Learn when to use each of these skills without energy management, hex removal or condition removal.

2. Move to the next level by adding Channelling. Next learn how to channel tank. There is nothing like surrounding yourself with foes when they break ranks... throwing up the channel and seeing anywhere up to 5 little +1's break across your screen.

3. Move to the final level by adding Draw Conditions and Cure Hex.

By the end of this lesson you will now have the ability to monk your way thru any mission in hard mode / EoTN or anywhere really. A great idea is to take a PnH Hero.

if you are in areas where channelling is not a good idea, take something like energy tap, waste not want not, or some other form or gaining energy from foes.

this should set you on the path to learning one of the best skills in the game. Infooze.

Yeah don't mean to burst your bubble but you don't monk in PvE like you would in HA.

That said I like bringing infuse to FA to heal gunther in emergencies.

ZB is free when you use it on someone below 50%

learning how to infuse is 100% unneeded in PVE, and if you think moving WoH to HB is the "next level" your going backwards. It seems to me your all about red bar go up, and using a HA HB monk would be a bad idea anywhere but in HA, mainly because that build is made to work with a 2nd monk all the time on HA maps. A WoH build is much better for solo monking. I also do FA a ton, and I use this when monking.

WoH, Pspirit, guardian, SB, Dismiss, Veil, SoA, Hex breaker

OwUUImG/SYSaENgCEaRKAba1E3VA

Or

ZB, RoF, guardian, SB, Dismiss, revealed hex, Hex breaker. For the last skill I change it a lot from SoA and Power drain.

OwUUImR+YYOX6ZiARLqA20ZwMAA

When I started monking in PvP I used this in AB

Scribe's insight, SoD, RoF SB, Dismiss, Deny hexes, Remedy signet, divine boon

and it made my a better monk for sure. After I used it for a few weeks I started GvGing as a LoD, WoH, SoD and RC monk and fooled a good amount of people in to thinking I played for 500+ ranked guilds.

Boon prot beat how to be a good monk in to my head, and I would have to say its one of the best ways to start out for anyone. Imo every monk should be good with boon prot.

I went old skool in FA today and used a old E-Drain boon prot and it also did "ok" for FA, would not use it for real pvp, but I was able to look people up.

sorry, i guess what i was suggesting is that learning to infuse in PVE and low level play helps for when you get to HA and GvG level.

i pretty much thought of another tip for new monks.... buy a gaming keyboard. best thing i ever did. WASD keys and 1-8 skill keys and all the other important keys are all situated on the keyboard with big buttons so you need never look at the keyboard whilst playing.... ever!!! use WASD to move as well as click to move and you can select red bars, select people as well as clicking skills too. either choice. ie. if i am sometimes pressing skills to heal people, i can also click on my stance at the same time to save finger movement if i am trying to move at the same time.

practice this.

this is what mine looks like. only after i got one of these that my monking improved 100% overnight.

But theres no point to learning how to Infuse in PvE, because if they start PvPing with it, it will not be anything like infusing in PvE.

Anyway I use a G15 myself, with G9, 12, 15 and 18 as my 5-8 skills, and G13, 14, 16 and 17 as my weapons. When I play on my laptop I have a 9 button mouse I use.

Also for people who don't have the money for a gaming keyboard, you could use R, F and V for skills or do what a lot of my GvG friends did, which is use Z, X, C, S, A, D to move, and use Q, W, E, R for your 5-8 skills.

1) Keep your monk skills at a relatively low energy cost
2) Bring WoH
3) Use stances or escaping/kiting skills
4) Do NOT waste your energy on removing conditions when a team has perma conds
5)Do NOT stand still. If you're being interrupted by a ranger, move behind a wall. I see a lot of monks thinking their hot shit because they can stand and keep healing, that is until they get the lethal combo, which could have been avoided if they had been running.
6) Daze is not the end of your life. Too many noob monks get dazed and just give up. If you're dazed move behind a wall or some other obstruction so you can remove it.

Wow, sweet keyboard. I'm probably not 1337 enough for something like that.

But that reminds me..... mouse buttons!
Most mice these days have buttons you can program. My mouse has 2 buttons on left side where my thumb sits. I have RoF and WoH programed to those buttons.

Just thought of some more, IF you are learning to monk in PvP go to RA, and take just 3 skills on your bar.

Patient Spirit
Word of Healing
Guardian

this is honestly all you need to keep a team alive, the rest is just bonus, if you learn to keep your team up with just these 3 skills, you will find yourself not relying on your stances to keep you alive because you will learn how to pre guardian properly, and you can save your stances for true emergencies.

Are you serious dude? You'll end up uninstalling guild wars because of all the rage people will give you.

You meet a VoR mesmer, you're screwed
You meet a blindbot, you're screwed
You meet a RTL airspiker you're screwed
You meet a mindshock, you're screwed
You meet a magehunters, you're screwed
You meet a beastmaster and you're likely to die

Monking is hard enough with 8 skills nevermind 3.

Yes but keep in mind this is RA, I've gotten to 10 consec at least 3 times just running these 3 skills, and boy its funny. Plus this is just for practice.

Also if you cant deal with a magebane, mindshock (who runs that anymore?) or beastmaster with these 3 skills, you are gonna be hard pressed to do it with 8. If you learn to fake your WoH ranger interupts become so crap.

~ Than you had support on your team and played god aweful teams, I could solo you easily with a warrior with only 4 skills. You'll never solo monk a team to 10consec. with only 3 skills unless you play people worse than yourself or have a support character to cut down opposing offense.

A lot of people run mindshock and any halfway decent ele would shut down your team and kill you with ease. B-flash frontline, you can't take it off. And any ranger who doesn't just try to predict interrupts and is actually good would man-handle you with ease. Dshot your WoH, bane your guardian, you have 1 healing skill for the entire party and i could just degen your team out. You'll kill your energy trying to fake out a 5 sec. and a 10sec. recharging interrupt. And since you have absolutely no management, you're just free faction. And you wouldn't be hardpressed at all to go against teams when condition removal and hex removal are on your bar, the fact that you think 8 skills would be more hardpressed on you is ridiculous.

~ Oh for the advice part so im not off-topic ^_^ :
If you move w,a,s,d, put your most important skill (reaction time wise) on your skill 8 slot (i.e. infuse or spirit bond), than make the command to use the 8 skill "spacebar." Placing your fingers on the keyboard your thumb should nearly always (if not always) be on the spacebar and has the fastest reaction time in comparable to hitting any other key on the keyboard (it presses the easiest) so you can hit it the fastest. (Scrapes off 1/8th time or more of the time it takes to normally infuse/pre-prot). Some people might find it awkward in the begging, but in the long run you'll see improvements in your ability to catch spikes, etc. (Place your fingers on the keyboard, count down from 3 pretending the other team is spiking, see which you hit faster your normal skill on a number, or the skill on spacebar )

My PvE only advice would depend on how new the monk actually is.

For a completely new player I would advice to read and learn all monk skill descriptions at the trainers and understand how those could help you. Learn how much your skills push the red bar up or how much damage they prevent. Learn to use your heals at the moment that they don't fully heal but will push a player/hench/hero back to about 90%.

Next step would be learning a little more about the enemies. Learn what skills the foes bring and how they influence your team. Do you remove a certain condition/hex or is it not hindering the party member in any way and just causing some degen?
If you master this cut down your bar to only the skills you actually need in that specific area. Learn their patrol paths.

Next up would be getting a negative energy set and learn to monk with it. Or use a maintained enchantment (preferably one that does not give healing benefit). Learn to be conservative on energy.

When you are at this point you are probably somewhere in the game where dual healer hench are available. Get the healing one and make yourself a prot bar.
Your job is to make sure that red bars don't get down and the team stays free of hindering hexes/conditions, the hench's job is to make the red bars go up again.
When you think you know this take the minimal skill bar you actually need for that area.

Learn to live with the fact that partymembers die once in a while.
Learn to play several types of builds, not just one. But make sure you get them in your fingers (response on impulse).

Only then I would step to the most important part of monking, looking around and see what's happening.
Who's getting hit, who's health is low but out of danger, who's in the danger zone, who has a nasty hex/condition (determine by looking at the animation around the player and the cast animation).
You then learn to pre-prot, anticipate on enemy actions, clean only what you need to clean, push red bars into safety (but not too safe). Learn to kite or better to avoid getting chased by foes. Or when kiting would be foolish (happens) just prot yourself up and have your team finish the foes.

This can lead to somewhat annoying situations though.
I'm always the first one to spot over-aggro when I play monk (and want to yell to guildies for that). Or when they pull our squishies (especially monk heroes by the front line because of overextending. That's a waste of my energy.

And something that I found very usefull to do when I was playing monk for a while was playing AB. It's not as hard to monk as RA and enemies are a mix of predictable AI NPC's and unpredictable human players (who become predictable after a while). Monk there with party window off, heal others, including NPC's. Watch what's happening around you.
When you are confident about AB move to RA.

I've played a fair PvE monk for a couple of years now, but I improved a lot from playing PvP (though I'm still not so good at that). But I would not start to learn to monk there unless you really want to PvP.

I think the most important advice I would give a monk is "Pay more attention to the battlefield than to the party window."

Doing this reliably allows you to:

1 -> Watch for incoming damage and pre prot
2 -> Manage energy by using spells judicially ... slapping a spirit bond on someone who's being trained for a spike is very different from "red bars go up" style of monking.
3 -> Teaches you to look for tell tale signs through the spell icons, animations and sounds.

Really, party window is a huge crutch for monking imo.

Of course, since there's no way to see what everything's casting and who they're casting at, except in very rare cases (eg, an elementalist enemy's casting fireballs or flares at party members - who are all spread out and are all wearing bright armor of diffrent colors so that you can tell them apart at the edge of your aggro/spell range bubble), among all the flashing lights...

Being able to be effective at pre-protection definitely requires good instincts, which are very hard to acquire. (Me, I'm not even going to bother since I know those instincts will never be mine and there'd be far too many wipes. Fortunately, I'm pretty good at getting the red bars back up and slapping protections on melee-types running in and those who have already been taking damage in that fight so that they end up taking less.)

Best tip I could give you:

Negating damage from happening > Healing damage that already happened

Use your sets, don't just camp your spear and shield.
For PvP monking on a WoH hybrid, I always bring:

A 40/40 Healing Set
A 40/20/20% Prot Staff
A High Energy Set
And my defensive sets.

This allows me to switch back and forth, allowing the most effective skill usage and tactics, while allowing Guardian/PS a longer duration.
