Since you are new to the world of the Mesmer, I would suggest Tyria. The only reason is because it allows you to explore and take your time to use the Mesmer. The Mesmer isn't like a Necromancer or Elementalist, the Mesmer is a subtle spellcaster. About half of the Mesmer's skills are conditional, so certain conditions must be met (like attack, cast a spell, etc.) in order for your spells to do their job. Prophecies will allow you to take your time and gain skills in its tutorial, and as you character grows, so will your experience with the Mesmer.

In Canthas, the tutorial is short, your character grows up quick, and before you know it, your Mesmer will be level 20 and you didn't really get much experience with your Mesmer at all.

I would suggest a Monk. Monks as you know are really good. Since you are experience with other professions, you know their strengths and weaknesses. The mesmer has 1 (and only 1) healing ability and its horrible. Ritualists are good as well, but they can only be created in Canthas.

Hope this helps.

Agree on Tyria, but disagree on the monk secondary, as monk selfheal is usually not very good eather. Monk sec is only useful IMO for the unlimited resurrection compared to the res sig.

I'd prefer Necro - blood and even curses have a nice range of spells and hexes that do damage and heal you at the same time.

I have a N/Me and they are great together. However, there are times when you must make sure some stupid NPC is kept alive. Sadly, not all people who heal (monks or rits) pay attention to their lives.

Monks are also hard to comeby, and Mesmers are not very welcome in PUGs (only if they need to fill space will they accept you, most of the time, they request MM, SS, Monks, Nukers, Tanks, and not necessarily in that order). Me/N suck as MMs, they can be okay as SS, but energy management can be an issue (Necro primaries have Soul Reaping). Mesmers do not make very good nukers (fast casting + high energy + medium energy regeneration does not work very well).

Just think what the Mesmer is lacking and go with that.

Have fun.

Me too, love her. Switched to Mo Secondary lately to try if that improves my MM, but doesn't pay IMO, will switch back.

In my own experience my Me doesn't have trouble to get into a PUG atm while leveling up. Maybe that's just the result of outposts being relatively empty in tyria. High end farming may be sth different, as there are often fixed group templates involved. But as Me/Mo you suck at healing capacity.

Everybody sucks at MM without Necro primary . True about the nukers, too, because to do tons of cheap damage I need my enemy's cooperation ... Inspiration is nice now against casters though, lots of spells to get something done and gain energy in the process.

The way I play, my Messmer's job is often to speed up group kills and cut off support. Especially in the beginning I'm low on unconditional damage (Phantasm) and selfheals; for me N fills a gap here. Having a Necro already surely helps, as I know the spells way better than say an Ele's.

"Mesmers are not very welcome in PUGs" -- My mesmer is my 6th character, and I thought the same thing. But my experience so far has been that it is easy to get into groups, in Factions anyway. I have literally flown through Factions.

Most important for a mesmer, a good memorable name with positive vibes. A name that makes you sound serious and reliable.

I have dropped into mission areas and had an invite immediately pop up because someone in the group has been with me before. They know things die much quicker when I'm around!

In PUGs I've only heard once that a Mesmer was requested in a group. I was in that group in one of the Southern Shiverpeaks quest, and the leader asked for a Mesmer. I laughed and said, "you never hear that request". And th rest of the group laughed too (including the leader). I don't think we did get a mesmer though. Anyway, you usually can get into PUGs if you are one of the first people in the group. Most of the time its "need 2 monks" or "need MM".

Rit/N are still good as MMs, they have Boon of Creation to gain health and energy for each minion or spirit summoned.

Wilebill, I think you are right about a memorable name. If you play well, people will remember you. I play a Ranger, Necro, Monk, and Rit well enough that people keep asking me if they can add me to their friends list. Every so often I get PMed by one of them asking me to bring one of my character to help them out.

In early missions, I find Illusion Magic is the best. By mid-game, I usually go towards Domination Magic. By end-game, I'm full Domination.

With most of my characters, I rarely find myself out of energy (only my Monk/Ele ever runs out, even then its rare).

Once you get used to playing a Mesmer, you'll find more and more people will start to want you because of your talents.

Thank Lyssa someone who agrees with me! There are very few zones where illusion magic trumps domination in the late game pve.

I gotta just point out that Illusion has some of the best big damage skills that are available to a mesmer like clumsiness, illusionary weaponry, ineptitude, and pahntom pain as well as some of the most debilitating skills like arcane cunundrum, clumsiness, crippling anguish, ethereal burden, imagined burden, ineptitude, migraine, soothing images, and sympathetic visage. And don't forget distortion!

Don't get me wrong, I also love the stuff in dom magic. I just think that illusion is pretty dang powerful in almost any situation. (nothing really beats AI with backfire and/or empathy on them, especially earth born titans with backfire...but oh well)

Earth born titans surrounded by 2 warriors backed up with a mesmer with A.echo and shatter hex is more like it
Shatter hex; the most useful mesmer skill for pve by a long shot ^_^
