Considering mesmer... But why?
Well, i've been wanting to start a new character and put my warrior to the side for a while, and ive just about considered every class. The top two I have been considering are monk, but ive just thought, hey what about a mesmer?
I know in the general in game community no one really understands fully what a mesmer does, therfore they are kinda left out. So thats what I want to ask; what's a mesmer good at? A monk heals, warrios tank etc...
My main playing style is I would say mainly PvE / Farming, but PvP happens occasionaly. I want to know A. will I enjoy being a mesmer? And B. Whats the best second proffesion for a mesmer.
I really wanna make the right choice this time, as im gonna put a lot of time and effort into this new character, get them perfect, just didnt wanna make a terrible decision on class.
Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Mesmers are good at preventing other classes (including other Mesmers) from harming, punishing them for trying to. In short, they prevent opponents from developing their strategies, lower their energy and health, and help your team's members develop their own instead.
As for the inconveniences, well, there's no build that prevents ALL ennemy strategies, but rather preventing families of team playing. For instance, there are anti-Warrior builds, anti-Monk ones and so on.
So a Mesmer is a observe-and-counter character : he(she) observes gameplays, then chooses appropriate builds that can counter most (but not all) builds.
Primary attribute is Fast Cast, which provides Mesmers with proper timing while casting their spells. Timing is crusial for applying counter-measures.
Generally, people who master Mesmer class prefer it to all other classes. Because it's an active and essential team strategy ingredient.
Best secondary profession for a Mesmer is, imo, Necromancer (because of the Curses line). Other valid secondaries are Monk and Elementalist, although they are much less interesting.
Hope this helps.

i agree with all themis said.
imo anet hit a homer with the mesmer. monks and warriors are pretty easy to not mess up. rangers are solid but i believe also fell into place without much worry. the necro is great in pve but a too slow for the pvp side. the mesmer is special in that there's never been anything quite like him in a rpg. he's not an illusionist. his skills allow him to manipulate his foes into doing what the mesmer's team wants.
a mesmer/necro is as strong as any combo in the game. imo he's only second to a monk/mesmer.

Other things to note about Mesmers.
-they tend to be free agents in groups. They dont need to target assist like other classes. They are generally best, as one person around here put it, "spreading the love around".
-in pvp(well, aspenwood etc anyways, I dont do HA), it seems people dont notice the mesmer untill too late. By then, they are either drained, interupted, or taking dmg from empathy, backfire, yadda yadda.
-if you want to simply piss ppl off in aspenwood type pvp, a mesmer is for you. Take an interupt build and harass the casters. Wanna make wammos cry? Take an anti warrior build. Wanna kill turtles? Degen. It doesnt take long untill whoever you are targetting will forget their duties and go after you exclusively
-you will have to get used to the wammo in your pve group taking the credit for making things seem so easy. Dont argue with em, there is no point. But you will know why it was so easy, and so will ppl who know mesmers.
-you get the best looking outfits...well, if you have prophecies(and are female) anyways. I dont like the Factions ones much.
-like the others said, go /N. It is by far the best fit.
-mesmer items(greens, etc) are cheap cheap cheap. No 50K for a +30 hp pommel or whatever.
-stupid ppl rarely invite you to groups
-there are so many interesting spells that you will find it hard to stick to a single build.
Thats all I can think of for now. Personally, I love em. I certainly wouldnt make one as my intro to GW(which I did and almost regretted) as they are rather tough on noobies, but if youve been around a while and want something really different, mesmers are great.

their appearance is the only thing that drives me away, but if it was perfected, i myself would love to make a mesmer, their appearance just downright draws me away, same with their animations, if these were lil better reanimated, i would love to make one, but i just hate the appearanceo f them so bad to even consider making one

meh, not a fan of how they look (altho i do like luxon 15k, kurzick 15k and canthan1.5k...prophecies ones for males look horrible..)
BUT they really are great, if you got an anti X build at that moment, X wont be able to do anything at all in the battlefield (playing mesmer requires lots of attention and a fast connection tho..)
i have one, in PvE i do my job, in PvP, i feel almighty @_@

I have a mesmer. And I know very well to turn away when i'm playing AB and one runs up to me. By the way if you just love killing people with hexes. Couple mesmer hexes with some necro ones like soul barbs and you have a fun filled killing frenzy on your hands.

I've been playing mesmer the entire time I've played guild wars for a year now, and all I can say is that you're going to die. You're going to die a lot. Mesmers have a low paper-thin armor of 60AL and if you don't have a good team in PVP you're just going to get the crap beaten out of you. Just be sure when you kill stuff that you do it well and realize that you can always improve and change something. Always dance on your dead opponents heads in PVP to reduce stress.

... 60AL, as opposed to Monks, Necromancers (aside from 1 armor type), Elementalists & Ritualists which all have 1000AC. Memser's are no more death prone than any other caster... what are you on about?
You're about as death prone as you want/need to be as a mesmer, as with any class...
Just because you spent a year of Guild Wars gameplay getting your Mesmer slaughtered doesn't mean everyone else will...

Thanks for all the replies guys! I think ill be going with Tyria (again) with a mesmer, simply because I know it well.
Just as a thought - I've not heard of much solo mesmer farming, is there such things as teams of mesmers with certain builds.. just like rangers?

not overly popular ones, but the solo mesmer farming builds are really useful. Just have a look around in the index of farming builds in the farming forum^^.

It's not AL that decides your number of deaths, it's the fact that any half-competent team will choose the mesmer as the first to take out. I played for a long time a domination necro (mesmer in necro clothes) and it was a lot easyer to stay alive...the only drawback was effectiveness...

Psychic Distraction + people swearing at you in arenas are two wonderful reasons to make a mesmer. Enjoy!

don't forget the Randoms Arena Stablilization Theorem
W/Mo=frenzy*(Inpetitude+clumisness)+degen^2/(Healing Hands*Shatter Enchantment)=ragequit.
I am submitting it to Princeton I think there are going to make it into a Law.
really its any melee class but who doesnt like picking on whammo's. Anti-melee is super fun in RA.

I can admit that the *only* reason I made a Mesmer was for the armor. It took making and deleting 2 Mesmers, but my third one is well on her way finally.
And yeah, being able to own any other class in the game is just fun..I've been partial to Domination so far, because interruption is just too fun. Of course, it hasn't been really helpful in PvE so far, but Im still exploring the skills really.
I don't particularly care for speccing into secondary attributes very often, so typically I'm /E for glyphs, or /Mo for some sort of Fastcast res. Considering /W just for heal sig..I miss having a decent self heal. -.-
