Look at the builds sectioin, there are builds for PvE there.
My suggestion:
Early in the game (pre-seering to shiverpeaks) - use Illusion
Mid-game (Shiverpeaks to Desert) - use Illusion/Domination
End-game (Southern Shiverpeaks - on) - use Domination
Reason for this is - monsters are weak in the beginning to mid-game. Illusion Magic can eat them up quickly. From Shiverpeaks on, spellcasters and knockdown skills tend to be very bothersome, so interupts start to become more important. End-game, spellcasters are very powerful and Illusion magic doesn't do enough damage to kill, so interupts are highly prized.
I cann't give you a build based on my suggestion because I can't remember what skills you have access to in the beginning and I don't know if you will change your secondary skills after Ascention.
I like N/Me or Me/N combo personally.
Anyway, good luck and hope my suggestion helps you a bit.

I don't mean to be mean but we get "new to mesmer, what do i do now?" threads least once a day. It gets kinda repetitive to explain the same things over and over again, and the Search option is rly only a click away. I promise...

Read from my lips:

stop asking same question again and again people...

Here is a build I use that I got from Avarre, but then tweaked to my personal preferences (I changed about 3 skills or so).
Me/W
16 illusion
10 inspiration
9 fast casting
5 tactics
Skills:
1. Images of Remorse
2. Conjure Phantasm
3. Clumsiness
4. Power Drain
5. Energy Drain / Mantra of Recall
6. Drain Enchantment / Spirit of Failure
7. Watch Yourself
8. Ether Feast
Basically, you spam Images, CP, and Clumsiness, inflicting lots of damage, while using the othe skills to maintain energy. You usually can continually spam those 3 skills without ever running out of energy. Watch yourself is there only because Mezmer armor is weak, and getting through some of the game with henchies, I needed some extra armor. It really helps a lot actually.

Then tell if making hundreds of same threads can be called constructive?
Maybe indeed I was too rude, but just look at the fist page of mesmer forum. How many threads with something in the line of "advise for new mesmers" you see? I see 8 right now. All containing similiar info. Is that constructive? I guess no.
The purpose of sticky threads like Mesmer Basics is to give you all the basics for new mesmers out there. Also there are lots of good guides on mesmers on almost every fansite. Just do your homework before asking same questions again and expecting that ppl will gladly give you answers that they posted allready in multiple other threads.

I recently started a Mesmer. I'm level 9 and I'm only in Ascalon. I really, really like Domination Magic. I use something to this effect:
Wastrel's Worry
Empathy
Backfire
Shatter Delusions
Diversion
Ether Feast
Channeling
Resurrection Signet
Any suggestions for improvements?

Make sure you know exactly what you want your build to do. Without a clear purpose your build will be weak. (Thats a tip for all professions.)
Look up in advance what monsters are in the areas you plan to travel through. If your going to spike opponents then knowing their profession is a must. If your going anti-something then knowing what their is a large amount of in said area is good.

Nice set up there. Ive been gone 6 months... thinking of starting over, because I forgot how to do everything But I have a level 20 mesmer/elementist... and 3 other low level characters...
Really thinking of starting fresh, and installing factions.
Thanks for this post... will see what I can come up with

my suggestion is that drop it dont make mesner in pve, a mesner is not necessary in pve imao. We got 8 spots only in a team. A typical pve team contains atleast 2 Monks, 1 Tank, 2 Damage dealers<Elementalist or Ranger>
. People will first pick necro, ritualist or another warrior. They probably wont consider taking in a mesner first. They do party a mesner but that is because that they couldn't find anyone else to party with... so imao, drop your mesner and make something else.

They are not picked first in pve because people do not aknowledge the power a mesmer has against an enemy. No ofense intended, but mesmer is not an easy class to play with, as you must know every other single class to know how you should deal with them. Think that mesmers are meant to be the "anti" everything, and they are. Here is the setup I use in pve, given the poor monster AI.
Empathy
Backfire
Shatter Hex
Spirit of Failure
Diversion
Ether Feast
Mantra of Recall [e]
Ress Signet / Ress spell
11 FC, 15 domination, 11 Inspiration
Follow what Pick Me said, go for illusion in early game, mix it with domination until the desert, and I recoment my setup for the rest of anything, including all cantha.

Indeed a lot of PUGs will not invite you or take you in groups; however, those are the ppe you don't want to get in groups with anyways as they don't really know what to be a mesmer is about. Now, you will see ppl requesting mesmers in groups for missions and ppl who know about the mesmer class will allow you in the group fast. As holyhawk said mesmer is not an easy class to play, but as soon as you start doing your homework and know the foes is very fun to shut them down.

You might want to drop that channeling, since you are not supposed to be so close to enemies, drain enchantment will do.Shatter delusions imo is also replaceable. Maybe shame or guilty to give you some energy. You could also drop channeling and shatter delusions for spirit shackles and mind wrack. Use that agains melee classes and you will be doing a lot of dmg to them.

Mesmers can wreck havoc more than an elementalist, by far, even if she was using the Elementalist's spell list.
They don't do party with a Mesmer because the Mesmer only deals 90 damage with a tiny motion, while the Elementalist makes this great big Fire Storm that has a huge effect, while dealing pitiful damage and making all those mobs run. Meteor Shower is there only for the KDs.

I came here looking for some advices for mesmers, but as an elementalist i couldnt pass by this post. Excellent, dear Lightning Hell!
My one and a half cents: Me/E is really powerful. The mesmer part has access to glyphs and the ele part to fast casting.

Actually, the opposite is true as well. An As an E/Me, you get access to a (reasonable) automatic self heal in AoR and a much bigger energy pool to use to fuel your mesmer skills. In PvP, I quite often run my ele with mesmer skillbar with some success

As an Elementalist, I feel guilty without pointing that out.

it is a sad fact that 90% of the groups are pug groups sometimes you can't be too picky about groups

Why Domination as a must late game? Ineptitude is possibly the most powerful PvE elite in the game. Sure its not quite the 'Diversion' your team was hoping for against Willia... but why exactly can't the rest of your team bring something against her? Is Distracting/Disrupting stuff really hard to bring or something?
Ineptitude
Clumsiness
Conjure Phantasm
Images of Remorse
Accumulated Pain
Energy Tap/Spirit of Failure
Power Drain
Res/Ether Feast
Enemies are stupid. They WILL attack through walls. They WILL attack through Clum/Inep. The damage potential against Mursaat/Jades is very high.
