Many mesmers have interrupted 1/4 second casts, and anyone who's done intentionally will tell you the secret to it is prediction (one could also argue this is the lifeblood of the class). Watch for a shift in enemy movement patterns that telegraphs a cast and hit the interrupt. Even though I say this, I'm only able to do this about 40% of the time.

Even more satisfying than hitting a 1/4 second cast, and definitely more effective in the long run, is timing a Diversion to land right on a skill's recharge so the player unwittingly looses the skill. It's even more satisfying when the other player knows you're trying to take the skill, plays cautiously, and still looses it.

Well, maybe that prediction is what makes it look boring after awhile.

But, it seems fun to try once, to watch enemie movement and try to time Diversion like that. Today I had most fun interrupting enemie skills with perfectly timed clumsiness "interrupts".
Somehow I forgot clumsiness is good for something else then damage alone. And with a relativly fast recharche, it's a fun skill to use. Somehow I overlooked the use of that skill.

Thanks all, and if any more have tips like that, or fun suggestions to try, please feel free to post them here.

What I do wonder about... why RoF when we have fast casting?
Even at 9FC you should be fast enough, no?

PS
Also, if you played another proffession for awhile, you can actually feel FC again. So yes, maybe I was getting a bit used to it.

Didn't try signet of illusion yet, keeping that on hold for a bit.

But I did try the things you said. Did you even know there was a farm build for ettings once, that used Signet of Midnight? It used a mure mesmer build...not fast but fun to try nonetheless. I wonder if it's still out there.

i think the mesmer is more of a passive type of player that provides excellent support while the rest of your team wont even notice how much youre actually contributing. for me, playing mesmer is all about being an annoyance. just piss of the other teams monks and eles with migraine and disabling all physical damage dealers with skills like ineptitude....nothing is better than casting a diversion on a tank just before his healing signet is almost done casting =P

Now that i have thought about it, i feel that Mes really is NOT getting any more boring. All you have to do is turn to pvp and try new builds to annoy your opponents. Being a passive character is what i like best. I dont need any recognition for wat i contribute to the team, i just need to have fun doing it, and there is no other profession that can give me that experience. The other day, i was playing a new build that i wanted to try and i was able to take out two opponents single-handedly!! The team didnt even say nice job, or wow, ur a great player, they just said gj to the war and ele and necro who took out the other two. But you know wat? i dont care!!! Mesmer is by far the MOST FUN class you can play, and i am going to stick with it forever.

I got bored with my beloved mesmer, created a sin and a monk, had a good time with them.
Now after reading this thread, I just want to replay my mes, thank you

I've not long started a Mesmer in NF. What would be a good starting build for a level 8 on Istan?

If you're getting bored with mesmer, the best advice I can give is to start playing GvG or TA, or maybe even HA. You can't truly appreciate the class by playing in PvE or RA.

well, this is very off topic but....your mes has the same hair as mine. i just got ancient armor because it looks so cool, but the mask screws the hair all up! you can see part of the mask sticking through part of the hair and on the other side, it cuts the hair off...im very angry =(

It's been said many, many, etc times before. Mesmer is the most highly underrated class in the game. The thing I like best about mesmers is the every day pug. Most people in the pug say things like "Not the Mesmer! They're useless" or "Might as well take the mesmer, there's no one else right now." Then they all think they're doing so awesome because the critters are dropping so fast. Never once realizing that the melee critters are dropping fast because of empathy and the casters just seem to self destruct due to backfire and power spike ( to name the more common ones). I will admit that I thought along the same lines as these narrow minded individuals, that is, until I played a mesmer. The first mesmer I ever played got about 3/4 of the way to level 20 without dying. I didn't even realize that I was mere minutes away from the first tier of the survivor title untill a stray mob came within aggro range and stomped me into the dirt. Just yesterday I was in a pug doing Abaddons Mouth and we were at the end fighting the seals and the seal guards when I happened to glance at the chat. After seeing messages like "RUN!" "Get out of there!" and "FLEE!" I glanced up to the party screen to realize I was the only one left and I wasn't even hurt. So I finished killing the baddie I was on, went back, rezzed the monk, then went back in. Out of every character class there is it's my personal opinion that a mesmer is the toughest, most versitile character in the game. Anything that any other class can do, a mesmer can do, and most times, do better.

My apologies if that was a little long winded, but I really really like my mesmer.

exactly!
and thats why i am thinking of quitting my messy.
the messy is a pvp beast! and for a person that has absolutely no interest in pvp other then aspy (which is dead) and the occasional ab a messy is just a pretty waste of time.
ahh well - well see how i feel about them in a month.

mesmers own in pve too. you just have to remember that you are a support caster and not super offensive like an ele. you do heavy damage, but it goes unnoticed by your team. you can also play a support-heal role with skills like expel hexes, inspired hex, or even bring blood ritual along with you.

Mesmers are somewhat useful in very high level PvE areas like DoA, FoW, UW, etc since their damage is armor ignoring. Anywhere else though, they are subar. It doesn't matter how much damage your spells can do, because they won't have time to work in a good group. Even when I'm playing with just heroes/henchies, I burn through groups of monsters like a hot knife through butter with MM and nukers. A mesmers would get only a few procs off their hexes in the time before the mob is dead, and a nuker would generally have dealt more damage for the same energy or less.

Don't get me wrong. I love the mesmer class. But you just have to accept that they are geared toward PvP, where shutting down a target or making a kill really means something. In PvE, killing an enemy is about as easy as breathing. The mesmer's skills are more useful for defeating difficult, intelligent foes than AI mobs. To be honest, I only made a PvE mesmer so I could look good in PvP. But boy, do I look good!

So true. My first character was a mesmer, and sometimes I didn't even realise how much of an effect I was having myself until my Warrior came through and I was having trouble getting through missions that, with my Mesmer, were easy as pie as soon as I could get into a group...

It's also something I've been feeling recently with pushing my Mesmer through Vabbi. When you start the fight just by spreading a few hexes around and then wand for the other half, it doesn't really feel like you're doing anything at all (especially compared to, say, a fast-casting air spike build). So why are the mobs dropping in half the time it took most of my other characters to take down those mobs, with nearly identical hench & hero groups?

Oh, yeah. It's because every time the bad guys try to do something, it's hurting them more than it hurts us...

Personally, I'd avoid deleting your mesmer if you've spent much time/effort on it. They do have some PvE uses, especially for high level zones. Plus you never know when they're going to come out with some ridiculous skill that will bring mesmers into mainstream usage. *cough* Spiritual Pain *cough* Also, I don't know how long you've been playing this game, but PvP gets more attractive as you mature in GW. Once the questing and farming have lost their appeal, PvP ends up being the only exciting thing left to do.

And last but not least, mesmers look awesome! You can play toward your secondary if you're not into hexing or interrupting, but one can always find a use for a class that looks this good:

I admit, I'm not very motivated to bring my mesmer through PvE again, maybe it's because it'd be my 5th character that'll be brought through NF.. but she's "stuck" on Kodonur Crossroads for now.

But I'll never delete her, I love her too much for that (not to mention her FoW armor)

well I can surely understand getting bored with a certain profession if you play it too long without changing from profession from time to time.
I started with a monk which I played for 6 months.
Then started a mes who gave me much pleasure and with who I participate in the weekly all mesmer meetings on Saturday in DWC int.1
After that it was a rit I made and now I am in love with my beautiful blond Dervish girl.
I brought her through Cantha with hench only and am now doing all prophecies missions and having a blast doing this but I would never delete my mesmer because maybe in a short while I will be using this char again and enjoying it very much.
Keep playing different chars and professions and be never bored is my advice.
