It's official! Buff mesmers! My 126 damage Backfire is too weak!
I wouldn't mind if this was moved, btw. Maybe having a thread where people can post their thoughts on mesmers would be helpful to the class and community as a whole.

My PvE mesmeress finished prophecies, factions, now she is on her way in Elona
I love playing her So many possibilities to choose from, such variety of tasks to do, such a versality...
And yes, I'm playing PvP too
I think the common problem is that mesmers are not for lazy people. You just cant play the same build over and over again. You need to adjust your skills for every situation you know you will encounter, for every mission, quest = you need knowledge to play mesmer. You need to know strengths/weaknesses of all other classes. You need experience, you cant just start playing mesmer as your first char or you wont be good at it.

Tell that to Avarre.
Mesmers didn't really get that much of a nerf. Distortion nerf made it a bit less desirable for Dom mesmers, but most of the nerfs affect /Mes and not Me/X. Well, they usually have much less of an effect, anyway.

Siddious, you seriously need to learn how to play Guild Wars, or at least hit the "B" key and select games. No offense intended.

clearly they are not dying... long as one knows how to use them well...

OP: I tend to agree. I haven't played my Mesmer as a Mesmer for quite a while. When I do play her, I play as a Fast-Cast Nuker, not as a pure Mesmer, although I did used to run a Domination build for FoW, which was quite fun. I don't know about PvP, but I wish ANet could make the Mesmer class more PvE-friendly.

Fast Casting is probably the best attribute, at least for PvP. Mesmers make any spell casting class (except for monk because of Divine Favor) better with that attribute. It makes 2 and 3 second cast spells very, very potent. If you've ever played as an interupter, you'll hate the FC attribute. It makes 1 second cast spells basically uninteruptible on a consistent basis. I've yet to meet someone who can nail a 3/4s cast time spell more often than he misses it. And, with high enough FC, you can turn 2 second cast time into 3/4s (I think 11 FC does that).

Mesmers are always popular in both GvG and HA.
You might not see as many on Obs right now (Though I see plenty..) because Paragons are put into every build now (because of crazy AoE buffs, and energy) - meaning theres less room to stick classes like mesmer or necromancer.

If Anything, Nightfalls was built around the mesmer, EASPECIALLY for those last missions.
(Not literly, but heck, you'll want a mesmer for those last mission)

Or maybe you just need to learn how to play one effectively.

I take offense! (Well, not really, but still...) I'm playing a mesmer as my first character, and I think I'm doing a decent job of it. I play as a domination mesmer, and as I said earlier, my build utterly destroys enemy casters. Sure, you need an understanding of the other classes, but that's why I read up on each and every skill every class has got. I'm not going to claim that I've memorized them all, but I've at least got a good enough understanding of each that I can predict what others will do. (Observer mode for PVP matches helps, too.)
Koala, Nightfall may be built around mesmers, but you can argue the same about Prophecies and the Mursaat. My build absolutely tears through the Mursaat casters, so I was highly effective in the later missions in the game.
The biggest problem with mesmers is that they start out slow. A lot of the spells early on chew through a mesmer's energy like nothing so newer players might get frustrated. The class does require a more in depth understand of the game than most others, but it's not hard to effectively play one in PvP if you just pay attention to what's going on. (Which a lot of people can't seem to do if PuGs are any indication...)

That's why mesmers aren't for new players. They are best played by experienced players.

Seening how the discussion is geared towards the PvP aspects of the game, i believe along with many others that mesmers still have a large role to play in the PvP metagame.
As for PvE, you dont really care these days what others think with Heros along side you.
so no, mesmers are not dying out.
