Default Novice mesmer looking for tips

So while I do love my warrior and I'm about to finish every HM title on all 3 continents, I find myself getting bored so I thought I'd make a new pve character. And since I love hexes and my necro is also boring me to death, I'd like to make a mesmer.

So while I'm experient in the game, and I don't leave home without my Gwen, I really don't know much about playing a mesmer myself. Are there any tips I should know while getting started? Some common builds (will check pvx later, can't atm), just common knowledge in general about playing as a mesmer.

Thanks.

For general information about mesmers you might want to look at the guide on wiki. Its very helpful and informative. I am by no means a mesmer pro, but I do play mine from time to time. They are very fun and great with interrupts and e denial.

Mesmers are an awesome PvE profession. You can deal lots of direct damage and spread a lot of conditions. The skill combinations are a bit odd and not always easy to put together, but after a while it'll be easy. One tip would be look up or remember what enemies you're about to face before leaving an outpost.

The link quad posted is actually very good..

Also as for a rule of a thumb I could give 3 pointers.. I am not experienced player, but my first (and main) character is a mesmer so I do know something about the profession..

1: Everyone has a weakness. If you can figure that out, then you are winning. This seems like a no-brainer, but with a mesmer it is the most important thing. Mesmer's are great using your opponents weaknesses in your advantage and they are not that great in anything else.
(In PvE it is easier to see the patterns the AIs are using.)

2: Mesmers fight against individual characters and not against big armies. So when you see many opponents to fight with choose one and fight that one. You should choose the one that is most valuable to the other team. Prevent that person (or AI) to use his/her skills and you've done much.

3: Stay alive. Mesmers are easy to very kill if you just give them the chance. Have a plan on what to do in every situation. Sometimes running away from the fight is something you need to do.

You can also add me to your friend list if you want. PM me if you want to know more.

As stated above the real important thing is knowing what skills to let them use and what skills to stop. Knowing what creatures have in there repertoire is very important. You are a Mesmer if you are sitting on the monk trying to shut him down you are missing the elementalist that is getting meteor shower off or my bane…. Maelstrom. These skills will whip a party if you are unprepared. Don’t get me wrong stopping a monk from casting is important, but not as important as stopping a party devastating skill. Get used to cycling through the enemy as you fight. Example - I will cycle the opposing team and hex melee with a slow skill or empathy, then I will backfire a monk, then I will sit on the elementalist and power drain, power spike or mistrust. Also try not to be counterproductive. Meaning if you backfire someone let them cast do not interrupt it. Good luck to you. P.S. hydras are good practice try stopping 3 meteor showers when you have a group of three attacking you.

Yes..
I was so sure I forgot something (as that is so typical of me and I wrote that reply pretty tired)..
To me the mesmers job is to make sure that the opponents team play will dysfunktion.

Also in my build I usually use [Epidemic] and something to get rid of enchantements ([Shatter Enchantment]). If I ever see an opponent with many hexes I can spread those even further. And when I see an opponen with an enchantment I can get rid of that..
I prefer to use the TAB-key to cycle the enemies and see what they're doing, but I wouldn't say it is essential.

Default Before I forgot..

This works usually in PvE, but why not in PvP
(if you know what you are up against)..

Make a notice on what kind of enemies you can find in different areas. Then make locel copies of your skills and spealise those against surtain type of enemies..
With melee type of enemies you pack with [Emphaty] etc. and with casting type of enemies you're skills should be [Diversion] and [Energy Burn] etc.
(And to that style - while I am not an expert player I cannot give good builds. I probably haven't even unlocked all the skills yet).

Also it is very good idea to go to a map just to learn about your enemies (or at least that is what I do). Meaning that you just go there to see what kind of attacks the enemies use and then try another time with a build chosen especially to those enemies..

As I said in PvP (and especially in RA) this doesn't usually work, but if your guild has noticed that some special enemies are a problem (perhaps Eles) then you could change your build so that it is more efective against them.
