elementalist/uh.....necro??
I'm starting to think about what to become, when i purchase the game....soon..
I want to be an elementalist....with the big spells and what not..but i can't decide on a second class.
It seems that elementalist/monk is a popular combo...but do many people ever use elementalist/necromancer?

I am elementalist/necro and I have seen many people with that build (not much as E/Mo though).
In my opinion, in PvE, you have to find the secondary class that keep elementalist alive. I use necromancer skill "soul feast" for that case.
In PvP, when we have no necro in team, I sometimes take rend enchantments (depends on the strategy of course).

yeah, that's what i was thinking, that being an elementalist, with little to no defence, I would have to choose a secondary to keep me alive. It seems a monk would be good at that...but...the necro is so...COOL

I have tried switching to E/Mo, even to E/R (troll unguent) but the secondary necro just fits me the most. That skill heals me for 142 life when I have only 6 attribute points in Death magic (however it needs corpses).

You're picking professions for all the wrong reasons; but we all did when we first got Guild Wars (reason so many rangers are running around), but if you expect to be the balenced elementalist with minions to do his or her bidding, don't be suprised if your minions die in 1 hit and you find yourself dealing minimum aoe damage to mobs.

enigmatics...uh..thank you. why SHOULD i be picking my proffessions, if not to have fun? in all past mmorpgs ive played ive always been the warrior, and i think it'd be cool to be the blasting mage for once.

I'm not taking any high grounds with you, just warning you. I myself like enjoying the game when I play through it the first time; I can't expect anything different from the rest of the gaming population.

For PvE, I have always chosen characters and skillsets that I enjoy playing, even if they are off the wall. (You're talking to a girl who insisted -and finally succeeded- in making a Tri-Ele in D2v1.10, after all the heinous skill "balancing" Blizzard did.) For PvP, I still play classes that I enjoy, but I chose the most effective skillset for our purpose.

so...does anyone disagree with e/necro being a good, or fun, PvE combo, and would it also work in pvp?

Not choosing a combo because it's popular is a little silly. If nothing else, you can be the guy who plays the W/Mo different than the other W/Mo. =)
Also, one reason ElMos are popular is because they are so versatile. They can be dedicated damage dealers, dedicated healers, or even tanks (against enemies that don't rip your enchantments off of you). That's the best reason to play an Elmo -- you can experience more roles in the game with just the one character.
That said, any combination you think sounds fun is the one you should do. You can make other characters, and it won't be so terrible. The most important thing is to pick a primary you'll like, really. Some people just don't like some classes, so that could be bad. (Generally, some people hate being a Ranger, Warrior, or Caster...)

I forgot my original argument. E/Ne are fine, they can be just as viable as other builds.

Your argument was that an ele trying to make an undead army with sucky necro skill points would die fast, but the point of necro sub is the draining of life, not the undead minions. At least thats how i plan on using it, after getting rid of stupid mesmer sub i took which is useful at its times, but not enough to my opinion...

Yes, choosing a primary that you enjoy is important. I informed my guild that I would play melee if they asked me to, but they'd only ask me once. I truly, honestly abhor melee and suck ass at playing it. I'll play ranger before I melee, and I'm none too fond of them either. Ele is my home. I've always played elemental casters in every game I've ever played. The interfaces are different, skill descriptions are different, but the basic idea is the same. I can fry you, freeze you, or electrocute you. GW adds a 4th line, earth, that I'm rather enjoying experimenting with, but so far it doesn't seem to be my cup of tea. Wards are nice, though.

but i never really see E/Necro builds in pages of online builds, so that makes me sceptical

Hey Nigy. My first character was an Ele/Nec. I have to say that the nec is an amazing choice for an Ele's secondary proffession. Most other primary classes have a fairly decent way of healing themselves. An elementalist has Auro of restoration which IMO is pretty poor compared to the other characters. Soul Feast is AMAZING. (For PvE) You can get over 200 health for every corpse that came by. Even if you only have 8 points in death you can still get a good 170 health from a corpse. You can also put points in blood magic instead and have blood wells, your team will love you for that. If your going for death magic, Corpse explosion is also a must. An elementalist is known for doing good damage, Corpse Explosion is a great addition to an Ele's arsenal. And on to my last point. A Necro has NO skills for his primary attribute (Soul Reaping). Soul Reaping gives you back energy for everything that dies. As good as this is, the high energy storage that an ele has is a just as good of a trade off. If you choose, you can go a FULL necro with high energy to kick ass with.
Please not this is just my opinion. I had a great time PvE'ing (and PvP'ing) with my Ele/Nec and still do.
