Fire/Air Elementalist Question
I was doing a mission today (in kryta) and a person that was in my group asked, "are you going to switch to air when you get to the desert?" I was completely clueless about what she meant and asked why i would do that.. She said that in desert fire does like 1/4th of the damage it would normally do... I became a nuker so i could do massive damage... I was wondering if i should switch to air and just forget completely about fire.. (I hope this is not the case because i already bought my pyromancer droknar armor ) If what she says is true... then what is a good air build?
Any responses are appreciated!
Thanks again...

I played the entire PvE game as a pyromaniac. Fire works as well in the desert as any other element. The only place it has problems in in the Fire Islands, specifically the last mission. Just bring a Ranger with winter along for the final mission and there should be no problems.

never fear. you can switch to another element when in the desert (doesnt have to be air) and then change back once you get to shiverpeaks where fire owns again.
the armor (except for the eye) doesnt actually affect your spells in any way, its just defensive, so having the pyro armor in the desert is a good thing, as it protects you against fire damge, which is what most casters in the desert use, so keep that too.
remember water is more effective vs fire than vs anything else, so consider that too.
if you're really in love with fire, stick with it - it will do less damage in the desert, but not to everything, only the fire based creatures.
anyway, have fun.

Exactly which creatures are fire based in the desert?
Minotaurs - melee
Devourers - ranger
Scarabs - Necromancer
Elementals - earth
Griffons - PITA spellbreakers
Drakes - earth
Losaru - a variety of professions all equally susceptable to fire
Did I miss something in the desert?

Hydras. Not that Hydras don't drop to a sustained fire assault.
You're probably better off experimenting with different elements by the time you get to the Desert anyway, just to see what they can do. By the Desert, even if you're just buying skills from traders, you'll have Air Attunement, Enervating Charge, Chain Lightning, Gale and Lightning Orb to play with. Earth comes into its own closer to the endgame (when you pick up Earthquake, Aftershock and Obsidian Flame), and the real fun begins when you track down Elemental Attunement and make multi-element builds more viable.

There's no problem sticking with fire the whole time, but I found it kind of dull after a while and switched to air because it is a completely different style of play. It was a nice change of pace. Air is all about smacking the hell out of one target much faster than fire ever could, in the process you get to see higher damage numbers and instantaneous damage, something I often wish I had as a pyro. The desert is a great time to dabble and try it out (and honestly, what does it cost you, you should have all the spells and the refund points will recharge in one mission).
