Elementalist/Ranger preSear.
I've just built an E/R in pre-sear upto level 8. I'm currently trying to get the best possible build before I cross to the dark side
Last night I ventured into the north and got my ass kicked VERY quickly so my elementalist is a bit of a wimp against the charr.
How can I improve her?
Here's her spec's
Attributes:-
Air Magic 3
Earth Magic 1
Fire Magic 4
Water Magic 1
Energy Storage 1
Beast Mastery 4
Wilderness Surv. 0
Marksmanship 3
3rd Eye level 5, Ele Robe Energy +5, Armour 7, Ele Gloves Energy +5 Armour 7, Ele Leggings Armour 7 Energy recovery +1, Ele Apprentice shoes Armour 5 Energy recovery +1.
I'm using a divine symbol +3, halves time to cast, armour +5. Fire Staff Energy +4, Fire damage 5-8, Damage +20%.
I hope this makes sense Where am I going wrong? Or What would you do?
I've read some of the posts on Elementalist builds and I'm too old/thick to understand them
Thanks in advance

you shouldnt spread your points out that much take out the water and the earth magic and air, put your points into fire and wilderness survival and anything left over into energy storage.
and beast mastery isnt that great so i would remove that too,
and if you arent usng a bow marksmenship is basicly pointless so go ahead and take it out and i forget the starter skills so plz post your build

Like they've mentioned, the attribute points need to be set on 2-3 skills only. I've done pre-ele, and I would say fire at highest would be best, followed by energy storage. If you want to try out different elements you should probably wait a little since most non-fire skills aren't available untill you get past yak's bend in post. But even then you should go with only 1 type untill you get all 200 attribute points so you don't spread your damage too thin. If you try to take 3-4 element types you'll end up spreading yourself too much and the damage done will be negligible.
Don't worry too much about the north wall thing, most casters don't do very well there on their own below lvl10, and if you're worried about going post after your pre-encounters with the charr, don't. The henchies make up for any disadvantages you thought you had.
And last, about armour and weapons. You will need to re-armour once you go post as soon as you can. On your weapons, you mention an off-hand focus and a staff. Remember that a staff is a two handed weapon, so the focus isn't helping you out, its effects get canceled unless you use with a single handed weapon.

So, I get rid of Staff and go for a wand (single handed) Lower attrib's on beast & other useless ones.
The only attributes I have now Are Fire magic 7, Air magic 1 and Energy Storage 3. The rest are 0.
I've got the divine symbol where the shield is to the left of my character in inventory. What should I use? I want to be a fire elementalist, then up to Air when level increases.
I'm off to find a decent fire wand Thanks for the offer of help mitch unfortunately my internet connection keeps disconnecting every 30-40 seconds Nildram say no problems... Line test is ok. I've tried new filters on the adsl. Could be the bad weather or my router. Maybe sometime over the next few days?
Thanks all. I really appreciate the help/advice

Do different weapons work better on different enemies? If so is there a post that describes what does what?

Weapons with elemental damage are more effective on certain types of enemies(most...definitely not rangers though). Other than that, I can really never tell between blunt, piercing, and slashing...hopefully someone can fill you, and me, in.

Your level 8 Elementalist vs a group of equal levelled char is not a fair fight so no wonder you got killed so fast. Once you go post-sear you'll find things around ascalon are a little easier to kill. (and for those that aren't, there are henchmen to help you as was stated previously)
blunt/piercing/slashing are all physical damage types, which work well against monsters that are spellcasters (in theory - only a few monsters in the game have had this proven) and and fire/earth/etc. are elemental damage types which work well against monsters who are warriors. Look at the player armor charts to see some reasoning for this logic.

Thanks for that info m8.
My 1st character'Ariel Darkwood' in post-sear plays quite well with a few henchmen or my guild fellow members. I've tried to put into practice what I learned here about attribute points for my E/R.
Ariel Darkwood R/W Level 9
Swordsmanship 1
Tactics 1
Beast Mastery 3
Expertise 3
Wilderness 3
Marksmanship 6
Powershot, Ignite arrows, Ressurect Sig., Call of Haste, Penetrating Attack, Read the Wind, Comfort Animal, Hunters Shot. In bold are the ones I use all the time. As you can see I've got nothing for warrior. Here's a list of other skills I have...
Wild Blow, Frenzy, For Great Justice, Troll Unguent, Gash, Sever Artery, Favorable Winds, Distracting Shot, Ferral Lunge, Cyclone Axe and Executioners Strike.
I'd like to keep my favorites but what others ought I add to them that's going to be most effective? I always use only my bow as I prefer a bit of distance.

You don't need to be useing to many Warriors skills as a low level Ranger and I would of choose E/Mes or E/Mo but nothing wrong with /r just don't use a pet and don't use a bow.
