Can an Elementalist use a melee weapon?
I have a E/W build and ive been trying to have a mixture of swordmanship, fire and mainly energy storage. Is there any good advice or builds for a E/W to wield a sword and a focus or shield offhand. Im only in nightfall; ive gone pretty far and my character ends up creating a basic dervish i guess. I do well in large groups while not being attacked but it doesn't take alot to kill me. As i said my character ends up being more live a regular dervish with a lack of any sword attacks. So if anybody has made a E/W with a meele weapon please share what you did.

Casters using melee weapons is generally a bad idea because of their low armor.

Casters can use them; albeit poorly. There are a few exceptions to the rule, as some melee weapons, like the Totem Axe, are good caster weapons.

Using melee weaons is a fine idea, provided you're using them for +5e and an enchanting/fort/defensive mod, and not for actually hitting stuff.
An ele is going to do less damage in melee than any melee class while being more fragile at the same time, it's really a bad plan.

Besides, if you're W/E you're better off not using that many ele skills as well.

An ele in melee really isn't recommended unless you're running an obsidian flesh build. Half of all war shields are useless for you since you don't meet the prereq for Strength ones being a non-primary war. You'd be better off avoiding melee and saving att points for something other than swordsmanship since you won't have any armor penetration from Strength and as such will never do the same amount of damage with the sword as a war.
If you want to be melee, make a primary melee character like a derv, sin or war. In the case of war though, ele secondary isn't as useful with most fire magic skills because of a war's low max energy and slow energy regen.
