If you want that shoddy degeneration, take a Ranger with IA / Apply Poison, or even Ether Nightmare. Oh, and there are AoE attacks too.

I just use Glyph of Renewal CoP Spammer in PvE now...no need for anything else. Bring EBSoW too, for good support for ur casters.

I don't use my ele in PvE, but kinda wanted to try Glyph of Renewal + Eruption. Could use Auspicious Incantation as e-management.
The +Armor Ebon ward bypasses the armor cap so you can combine it with Ward Against Elements for +40.

Since when did the +armor ebon ward bypass the armor cap? Its a skill, the armor cap applies to stacking between all skills.

That's really about it. Elementalists' damage is just incredibly low in HM.
@Mouse at Large;
Degeneration is weak in PvE, and if I really wanted it I'd rather have someone pressing SF over and over.

How do Water and Air fare, though? It's fairly obvious that Earth brings the most to the table thanks to all of its anti-melee options, but, surely there are reasons to invest in the other two. I know Fire's crap other than Mind Blast, so, we don't need to talk about that. I mean, Water brings Deep Freeze and Maelstrom, while Air brings Blinding Flash and a couple other fun condition inducers.
I guess this also leads to a second question: What are my best options until I can grind out enough ranks for the PvE-only skills to become useful?

The only thing Water brings is Blurred Vision, Deep Freeze and Maelstrom. The last two don't require major investment and you can always triple spec for Blurred.
Air... depends. Blind is a good commodity, but Blinding Surge is really only more useful in PvE than Blurred when you've got Dervs, or Assassins.
Keep in mind running Mind Blast, you have sufficient energy management to run either. The same goes for Ether Renewal.
For grinding out ranks, they are pretty useful even at minimal spec.

Eh, I guess I didn't clarify the second question well enough. Prior to grinding out my ranks, should I be running pure Earth, a Mind Blast Earth hybrid, Water/Earth, Air/Earth, or something completely different? I'm not particularly interested in playing a faux-Monk with Ether Renewal, so, I was wondering what would be best to run.
Regardless, thanks.

I generally prefer the following, mainly for the coolness factor though:
Mind Blast
Deep Freeze
Maelstrom
Eruption
Ward Against Melee
Churning Earth
Whatever
Whatever
Basically, none of those skills other than Ward Against Melee and Mind Blast require attribution. I guess it'd be better as an Earth / Water hybrid so I get Blurred Vision too, but meh. Just something I thought up randomly.

I *HATE* ANet for turning eles useless.
In any game I have ever played I was the "wizard" nuking things out from a distance. That is my playstyle and I *HATE* (did I say that already?) ANet trying to force me in a "support role". I don't like monkey stuff, it all begins with I don't like targeting allies and ends with i like making damage from a safe distance (unlike W).
Anyway, eles are pretty much useless as nukers these days and as support you can do better with other classes... so... I don't know what you're supposed to do with one in HM, and not many places want eles in their parties anymore...
If there ever is a reason I left GW, then that will be because I can't play "wizard" anymore.

Go /Me. Run Ether Renewal. Bring Arcane Echo and Cry of Pain, then a fast casting Mesmer hex. (Conjure Nightmare etc.), CoP the shit out of them.
Oh, that was hard...

that and there's no ele spells which are used in support that target allies. Wards don't target allies, water snares target foes, blindbots target foes...it's still being a Wizard. In fact your definition of Wizard is rather dumb considering the Dungeons & Dragons wizard, and even the Lord of the Ring's wizard (both things that made the "spellcaster" archetype popular in most forms of media today), both use many many many many many many many many support spells. Saying all a Wizard is is a nuker is rather dumb.

anet isn't forcing you to do anything; they designed a game that you bought, that's all. if you don't like the role of casters in their game you can stop playing any time you want and play/design a different game that's more to your liking.

I always bring at least one water ele hero + cynn if i am playing a profession that is non elementalist. best if you can micro manage this hero to freeze desire target. if no its fine too.
If my character is elementalist, i bring 3 other hero ele making a group of 2 nuking ele, 1 water ele/mo and 1 earth ele/mo with aegis (or 1-3 useful monks skill) + rebirth, i am usually the water ele in this scenario as i can call target to nuke the group that i've freezed and usually cornered. kill fast and don't forget your attunements. If i may say so myself, its working quit well too. the skills that you must have on the water ele is maelstrom + deep freeze, with dual attunement.
so you have 4 ele/monks or ele/rits or 2 ele/rits + 2 ele/monks (for the extra prot/heals)
your hench ideally will be 2 monks + 2 warriors, or one warrior and one other of your choice.

You can still be an ele and stand back and make enemies go 'poof'
E/A Energy storage 12+1+1, Deadly arts 12
deadly paradox (for fast casting deadly spells with no side effects)
Enduring Toxin (cheap cover hex if you are up against hex removal)
Mark of Death (nice hex for handicapping pesky Hard Mode monks(s))
Pain inverter (needs no explanation)
Assassins Promise (At 12 deadly arts it returns 17 energy and recharges fast with of deadly paradox if it happens to miss )
you move like a dwarf (applies condition for Discordway plus works well with AP)
Finish Him (should be considered part of Assassins promise)
Sadists signet (just in case you need a spot heal)
That build is great for a discordway team but if you dont use discordway then i have used this one.
Deadly paradox (fast cast/recharge sin skills with no side effects)
Dancing daggers (midline lead attack does decent damage and its cheap to cast)
Entangling Asp (great skill to follow lead attack causes KD and poison)
Signet of toxic shock (what better way to exploit a poisoned foe than 82 armor ignoring damage?)
Assassins Promise (dont leave home with out it)
Ebon vanguard assassin support (for more ouch)
Finish him (part of AP)
glyph of lesser energy (no explanation needed)

In case you missed it (it starts in german but it's in english):
http://eu.plaync.com/eu/news/stream/...ion_special_3/
So their designer is saying that: "it's really hard for us to get a caster to do the level of damage and dps that the warriors do and the front liners..." and then he says "but for GW1 we kinda pushed a lot of the casters into the support role and we're probably going to do that in the balance".
I don't think this was true when GW started and I think eles were pretty good damage dealers but now they're being pushed to a "support role", which don't fit eles at all.
And as a matter a fact you can see they are turning useless by the number of builds and team builds that include eles lately. As a fun fact there isn't a single suggested TA build on PvX: http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Category...king_TA_builds

And that's where they should be. No reason they shouldn't be allowed to deal a little damage for themselves, however.
And Eles do fit the "support role". What, other than Fire Magic is supposed to deal damage as a primary priority?
