for general PvE I would take Air because of a very good air spiker build
but for farming earth magic for sure

It's close between water and fire because both aren't that good.
Air spiking sucks in PvE but [[Blinding Surge] alone is good enough to make the line better then fire or water.
Earth is just awesome. Medicore damage (just as all other lines) but great support with AoE blind, AoE knockdown and wards. I rarely ever play with another attribute in HM (when mass blind with [[Blinding Surge] is required i sometimes use air).

What's supposed to be so great about water in HM PvE? For PvP sure, but I don't really see the point in PvE. Snares are not that great there and [[Ward against Foes] works better then water hexes anyway (in PvE since you know where you will fight).

The spell line doesn't really matter as it isn't going to change the fact that the most useful skills on your bar as an Elementalist will be your 3 PvE skills. If I had to pick then I'd say either Fire (Mindblast, Rodgort's) or Earth (Eruption, Churning Earth)

Air is highly unimpressive.
Water doesn't require any attribution except for Blurred.
Fire just sucks.
Earth is the same as Water.
I think I'll go with Earth, since it's got the most useful skills and therefore worth speccing into for the damage.

IMO
For NM, fire magic for most areas
For farming, earth magic
For HM, go with all PVE skills and secondary skills from another profession like necro.
When I use my ele in HM I don't use any ele magic skills, I only use necro skills. Works great with the setup I run.

Fire - nm. Depending on the area fire/burning/steam works in hm to
Earth - farming/hm
Air/water -hm.

A lot of eles I see in PvE either use fire to nuke or earth to tank. I wouldn't know if that would be the best though.

While I'm no expert on ele's with my time as one I've found earth to be the most useful in the most situations. No other attribute has so much versatility; you've got good aoe damage ([eruption][churning earth][earthquake])
good single target damage ([obsidian flame][magnetic surge][ebon hawk]+[stoning])
good party support ([ward against melee][ward against elements])
as well as decent survival skills ([armor of earth][magnetic aura][sliver armor])
idk to me earth just offers the most of any one attribute

Earth is the best in HM, after that Air and Water ex aequo. Fire the worst in HM, the best in NM. But only because of dmg and outside of Destroyer areas.
Shadowmere - Ward against Harm is Water Magic. And Magnetic Earth is ftl.
