just do what eles in PvE do best, dont worry about your secondary to much. you shouldnt be doing much healing. the best thing to do is just switch to rit or monk secondary and bring a res. As for weapons a 40/40 fire set will really increase the damage output.

Since you are new I'll clarify some of the above posts...
A 40/40 set means that you have two weapons (a wand and an offhand) that both provide 20% half casting time (HCT) and 20% half spell recharge time (HRT) which add up to a 40% chance to half casting and recharge times.
The other option is to look into a staff that will give you 20% HCT and HRT along with +30 or +60 health.
As far as a secondary, like others mentioned, it's not to important. Eles are meant to output massive damage and shouldn't be to concerned with much else. I would recommend Mo or Rit for the resurrect spells or Mesmer for energy management if you need it.

Unfortunately Eles don't do massive damage to mobs lvl 26 and higher, so you better do something else too, like providing some support via wards or skills like aegis or extinguish. Splinter weapon and great dwarf weapon cast on a physical attacker also does nice damage (although you wont see the yellow numbers ).

As an Elementalist you can easily do very well indeed in pve just using ele skills.
Being able to res is an advantage so as has been said Monk Rit or even Paragon all have a hard res ie one you can cast more than once.
Don't worry about being necro secondary you have access to a lot of good skills many of them armour ignoring.
Just because its not a popular pairing of classes is no reason not to try it out.

cap some good ele elites like mind blast, searing flames, savannah heat and blinding surge
i'd just buy an exuro's will or koosun's fire staff for a good fire staff that has a good price

Ok Merlin, I’ll give you my spin on your questions. First off, you will shortly find out people have very strong opinions on what is “best”. However, this game changes enough that being flexible is often more important in the long run IMHO.
Exuro’s Will is a perfectly fine staff. Keeping in mind most people have multiple weapon sets for each spell line they use. Typically that would be a
1) 40/40 set (as covered earlier by others)
2) High energy set ( -1/+15 items)
3) High HP set (Exuro’s fits here)
4) Plus 20% enchantment
At this point in your gaming, IMO you can’t really go wrong collecting a wide selection of items. Not that I’m encouraging you to go out and spend all your gold, because I’m not.
And now, on to your secondary profession questions. Your first choice of Necromancer, isn’t the worst you could have done. Some spells that you might find useful are Rend Enchantments, Rip Enchantment and Weaken Armor.
And once you get to the Command post (if you haven’t already), definitely add Mesmer as a secondary. Mesmer opens up so many goodies to an elemental a book could be written
I hope this helps, and have fun out there above all.

If I may clarify-- a 40/40 isn't only "40% chance of HSR/HCT". Each 20% (wand and offhand) has it's own ability to kick in (thus being able to halves an already halved skill recharge or casting time). For example, if you cast Meteor Shower, and, if you get both HSR effects you will take that 5 second cast down to a 1.25 second cast. 40/40 DOES however increase your chances better to get the results you want, but, don't get it confused that it is only a 40% chance to pull it off. -Lena

If you play a lot with H&H (heroes and henchmen), you should also have a longbow in one of your slots for pulling groups. The stats of the bow don't matter for that, and you don't need to be secondary ranger or put any points into marksmanship, since you won't be using it to cause damage.

Ok, since we're talking PvE here then really the best role for the ele is to blow stuff up and cause big AoE damage. The best way to achieve this is for you to take Fire Magic skills but to be perfectly honest there isn't really many great AoE fire skills so a lot of people tend to pack a few utility skills in the ele build as well and with their high e-management they can be used more effectively than cramming them in with someone who has a smaller energy pool and who already has a full skill bar.
So what I would suggest is going E/Mo or E/Rt with
Savannah Heat
Tenais Heat
Searing Heat
Rodgorts Invocation
Glyph Of Lesser Energy
Protective Was Kaoli/Heal Party/Extinguish/Weapon of Warding (Depends on preference and the type of enemies you'll be facing)
Fire Attunement
Flesh Of My Flesh/Death Pact Signet (if you're a E/Rt) or Rebirth/Ressurect (if you'e E/Mo)
The atts would preferably be something like
14/15 Fire (12+1+1 or 2)
10 Energy Storage (9+1)
8 Restoration/8 Healing/8 Prot (depending on which secondary and utility skill you took)
(I think those atts are right, if they don't match just play around until they're similar)
The for equipment you'll want a
40/40 fire set
Spear + Shield Set (+30 Health, + 5 energy on the spear, +30 health and -10% vs X on the shield, and have a range of shields vs different damage types)
Staff Set (Isn't really that nessecary, but I guess if you do run out of energy you could use one.)

/A for [[Assassin's Promise] to bypass the long recharge times for [[Glyph of Sacrifice] and [[Meteor Shower].
/Me for [[Auspicious Incantation] to use with [[Deep Freeze] as a dual use snare/energy management.
/Rt for Hard Resses like [[Flesh of My Flesh (PvE)] or [[Death Pact Signet (PvE)]. [[Ancestors' Rage (PvE)] and [[Splinter Weapon (PvE)] can be used also.
Any max AL armor with the appropriate rune setup can be used. Exorbitant equipment isn't crucial. Preferably high health armor (Survivor Insignias) although Radiant can be used if you think you need the extra energy.
A Fire Elementalist should be using a Superior Fire Rune to deal the most damage it can, but I'm sure some people would disagree with me. Have a Major and Minor Headpiece to swap for Death Penalty.
Standard weapon sets. A +5 Energy/30 Hp Weapon with an offhand of choice. 15/-1 wand and offhand. 20/20 Fire Wand/Offhand. +60 HP fire staff. Consider an "of Enchanting" weapon on switch for [[Fire Attunement].
For Green Weapons, Exuro's Will/Korshek's Scepter and Lian's Lantern work great for completing two weapon sets.

Have 2 different headpieces, one with a minor rune and the other with a major rune(which gives you -35 health for the extra +1 attribute). Use the headpiece with the major rune. If you get dp(dealth penalty, as in you get killed) switch to the headpiece with the minor rune so that you'd have more health(as in the -35 you lost because of the major rune).

Put more insignias(Survivor/Radiant/whatever floats your boat) and runes(Vitae/Attument/etc...) on it.

More fancy/pretty looking armor is out there, but their armor lvl is the same as the ones you're already wearing.

If you are a fresh E/N in Nightfall then I would really recommend trying out the joys of Earth Magic which, unlike fire, will serve you well through the game and in Hard Mode as well. Start with one of the best skills in game, Enfeebling Blood, then add Earth Attunement, Glowstone, Stoning, Sandstorm as elite, possibly a ward of your choice and some additional utility like Rip Enchantment and you'll have a great all around character providing offense and defense at the same time

Yet again another topic full of completely and utterly wrong advice. Use the search function, the topics about Elementalists and hard mode will prove that I am right. Here the short version:
1. Elementalists damage in normal mode sucks for any other skill that [[searing flames]. With [[searing flames] you will do OK damage in normal mode.
2. Elementalists are no damage dealers in hard mode. Never. Never ever. Elementalist damage is always armor dependent and HM enemies have tons and tons of armor. The damage output simply sucks and there is no build that can even remotely compete with the damage output of Necromancers, Mesmers or any physicals.
3. Fire magic sucks. The only exception to that rule is [[searing flames] in normal mode. You can change your attributes as often and whenever you want, use it. Earth magic is generally considered to be the best line in PvE.
4. Since the Elementalist is no DD his/her role in the party is: Support. It's one of the best support characters in the whole game. Earth magic has awesome skills like [[churning earth], [[eruption], [[ward against melee] and [[unsteady ground]. Use them.
Now that we got the basics ...
As for items: A 40/40 set for earth magic is probably the most important you want to get. The merchant in the Kurzick armory sells one for a total of 10p (5p for each wand and focus).
Insignia: Blessed on all pieces for your default armor (the one that give +10 armor when enchanted).
Runes: Headpiece on earth magic with a +3 earth magic rune. Put a minor energy storage on another piece. One big life rune (they don't stack, +50 if you want to spend the money but I'd probably go with a +41 one to save some money) and the rest with minor vitae (+10 life, they stack).
While earth magic is awesome for all areas in PvE you will sometimes want to use other lines. So get head pieces with +3 runes for all elements and swap when needed.
