At what point should I start to worry about build and such?
So I picked up the game last week and have been enjoying exploring in the pve realm. Right now, I have one character in Prophecies post searing. I was run to Lion's Arch by a friend, but other than that, left to my own devices pretty much.
I read through the Basic guide stickied here, but well... honestly, that still doesn't seem too basic. It seems to assume I have a working knowledge of the game and am a lot further along. For example, the section on weapons... I'm still using a simple air wand and weak focus item. The guide talks about 40/40 and such, but really, when can I expect to get even close to this?
Is there a beginner's guide that deals more with how to get started, what quests work well, or would this be in the Prophecies forums?
Any other noob tips for myself? I'm up to the 30AC armor, but any other tips at all? When can I see better items? When can I see everything? Should I focus only on the campaign now or skills first?
Thanks all.

Welcome to the game.
Guildwiki has plenty of guides for you to peruse. I don't know if they're quite what you're looking for or not.
The Basic Guide, whilst it may seem complex to you just now, really is basic, but yes...it is aimed at level 20 Elementalists. Getting to Level 20 in this game, and access to plenty of weaponry (collectors' or otherwise) is very quick. If you choose to use the guide, use it in a way such that you can keep in mind a direction you want to be travelling down. Choose a build and appropriate weapon sets and then aspire to achieve them. You can always use the guide as a target rather than just instructions.
Honestly, it would be very difficult to do a guide much more basic than that one. Each game's starting point, skills, etc. is different. At level 20 the "playing field" levels out a bit.
You should enjoy being new to the game and mess about with a few of your own ideas, but just keep in mind where you're going, so that when you do reach a point in the game where you begin to understand / achieve the basic stuff you have a good base to build from.

As you go through the game!! Good, gold, max weapons are usually buyable from other players for just a couple of platinum these days also - just worth bearing in mind.

When you've completed the primary quests and missions for each game.

If you're doing Prophecies first, then you can get many skills as quest rewards, therefore you're not having to shell out a lot of money for them. Just keep an eye out as you go along the primary quest route for any other secondary quests with interesting skill rewards.
If you have the other games, now you are at Lion's Arch, you can make your way to Kaineng and Kamadan. When you reach level 10 you can go to Eye of the North.

Aside from getting better armour, I would say that the first mistake was being ran to LA, thus skipping a fair amount of stuff. Presearing is meant to be the ease-in training to the game in Prophesies, and to get the most out of it you should have done all the quests there and left at about lvl 7-8. Then continue to do all the quests and missions as you go through the postsearing game (for xp and free skills as rewards). Prophesies has by far the easiest learning curve of the campaigns...I recommend not rushing through it.

I have to agree,
getting a run is mainly for people who completed the game on one or several characters before. As a new player, it's best to just go through the game normally. You will gain levels in the speed it was meant to be, and there's a lot of skill quests on the way.
Don't worry about builds, just try concentrate your skills on 1-2 attribute lines at most. Usually Fire/Energy Storage is a good start, and you can try out other attributes as you progress. Just try put in skills you learn from skill quests, experiment a bit and just have fun :-)

Now just because I was run to LA, doesn't mean i can't go back and finish all the quests correct? I'm not trying to skip everything, but a friend did offer a free run, and I figured in the least, I get to see new sites, but have hopefully not hurt myself too much.

No you havent hurt yourself at all, at the least you have gotten better, stronger armour in Lions Arch and can now go back and complete the early missions a little bit easier.
As Bristlebane said, dont try to make a build that uses fire + water + air + earth + energy storage pick 1 element and energy storage for a start.
Id say the only time you really need to concentrate on builds, and gear is when the enemies start to get close to lvl 20.
Most things are learned just by diving head first into them It would be hard to set up a guide like you were asking for, best we can do is help with any specific problems you encounter.
If ya got any questions about anything specific just pop em on here, somebody will answer you. Im always open to talk ingame if im online and you wondering about anything feel free to ask whatever. IGN - Heavenly Aeris

It's a bit misleading to say that. You can get level 30 armour in Ascalon, Yak's Bend and Lion's Arch.
The next level up is AL39 from Bergen Hot Springs, or AL60 (max) by jumping over to another campaign / expansion.

Ok, these guys have been playing the game for way too long, no offense. When I started out as an Elementalist (back in 2005) I had some really terrible builds and when I look back, sure, I made some mistakes, but if you go slow for a while you'll eventually figure out what you like doing. I would recommend trying out many different setups for skills, because it's one thing for someone to tell you what's good vs bad, and it's quite another to actually see it for yourself so you know WHY it's good or bad. Equipment doesn't make a huge difference in this game aside from having appropriate level armor for the area you're in, which you have. Max armor will make the early areas deceptively easy, so I would recommend against getting it, and you probably don't have enough money anyway. If you would like some more specific tips, pm me in game on Unien Aule, and I'll help you out as much as I can.
