Well,i can tell you d/w will NEVER be as good as a scythe to start off,but guessing you have access to pve skills and have a decent rank you could use one.
Somthing like this will be usable.
[Asuran Scan]/[Pain Inverter]/rez[I Am the Strongest!][Ebon Dust Aura][Whirlwind Attack][heart of fury][barbarous slice][gash]
Change it to your liking, whirlwind+ebon dust aura is the base of the build, run somthing like 10+1+1 mystic 8+1 earth and 12 sword...like i said above, not going to be the most effective build ever but it would do decent dmg and spread blind.
Weapons should be a 15^50 ebon 30+ sword and a 30+ health -2enchanted/10+ vs slash/10+ vs piercing shield, which ever you like.

i know a dervish without the scythe won't be as good as with one, but i want to try something different. and just for fun. when i started playing guild wars again with only fun in mind i got hooked again and haven't looked back. i don't play pvp pretty much only pve.

if you use a shield then would stances be worth using if you invest in tactics for a shield?

thats the problem with a sword/axe dervish. you dont have the nessicary attribute points. you need 12 points in sword/axe to deal damage. you also need a decent spec in myst for Heart of fury because it is your only option for an IAS. then you need to spec at least 9 in tactics to have something useful in your offhand.
you just cant do it. you dont have the attributes to use a one-handed weapon on a dervish.

Not gaining an extra 8 armor... I wouldn't exactly call that not useful. You still gain +30 hp or +45 (enchanted).
[skill]Barbarous Slice[/skill][skill]Gash[/skill][skill]Sun and Moon Slash[/skill][skill]Save Yourselves![/skill][skill]Asuran Scan[/skill][skill]Avatar of Lyssa[/skill][skill]Heart of Fury[/skill][skill]Eternal Aura[/skill]

pretty useless compared to a scythe, or even a hammer or daggers.

i would think there has to be a way to make the D/W with a sword flow together, maybe no one has figured it out, but there has to be a way to make them synch with each other to some extent.

From Guildwiki
The major boon of using a scythe is that scythes are capable of striking multiple targets at the same time. This effect is not the result of a skill, but rather an inherent property of the weapon. It can hit up to 3 targets with an attack. Consider this as a valuable aspect of battle. For example you can use vampiric or zealous upgrades on your scythe to have a possible added affect. Since the scythe strikes multiple times per attack you receive multiple benefits. The scythe's maximum damage rating of 41 is also the highest of all weapons; however the minimum damage of 9 is one of the lowest, giving it a very variable damage range

How couldn't you like a scythe? They are amazing.

Well alot of Dervish's use.
Green Totem Axe, and Stalwart Carapace Shield, or Malinon's Shield.

If you like pissing around with Gimmicks roll an Elementalist with this bar:
[master of magic][conjure frost][frozen burst][lightning touch][slippery ground][aftershock][inferno][shell shock]
Originality is fun to some people, but it doesn't alter the challenge itself at all.

Oh, okay.
[earth shaker][bull's strike][pious assault][eremite's attack][distracting strike][heart of fury][rush][no skill]
I think this bar deserves an award for bravery; weaponswapping is key.

thats because there arent any. ive been over this. I play a dervish main, ive explored plenty of alternative builds for him. one-handed weapons just suck on a dervish. you are losing the damage potential of a two-handed weapon and the shield you get with a one-handed weapon. plus your IAS doesn't synergise well with any sword skills. there are not ways to make every combination work.
