Play through the game. Higher level enemies drop better weapons. When you get money from quests and killing things do unlock skills from the skill trainer and Hero Skill trainer.

here is probably the best advice - play through Prophecies first. i started playing GW about a year ago, and after going through all the campaigns I've decided that everybody new to the game should start in prophecies - it has a really good story and ramps up at a good speed for the average noob. factions (and even NF) ramp up way too quickly and have too many noobs running to the forums asking this exact same question.
I realize you want to play as a dervish, and that's your decision. but i really do wish everyone would start with prophecies.

I fully agree with Shursh. Because of the fast leveling of Factions and Nightfall - and EN once you hit level 10, people too frequently ask where to get better stuff, and what to do since they hit level 20.
This is one of the reasons why I dislike EN being accessable at level 10, and why I dislike fast leveling. It makes the game too fast passed.

I caught you lurking in Campfire, Konig! HA!
Anyways, I agree with Shursh and Konig. Prophecies was set up to teach a player how things worked from Pre-Searing through the storyline all the way up to the Ring of Fire Islands. Once you hit the Crystal Desert, you start finding well-mixed mobs that are set up like PvP teams - Frontline, Midline, and Backline - that all work well together (the Desert Missions can be a pain in the ass) that test your ability to work against other "planned" groups.
The experience gained by starting a character in Prophecies is not to be overlooked. Sure, there aren't Elite skills within easy capping distance from where you start on Noob Island/Continent, sure, it takes time to level your character up, but the progression and learning is what it's all about. Skip that, and you skip a useful resource for understanding the game instead of 12345678'ing through your next farming run.

Like they said already, Proph is a better starting campaign for any new player. Not that starting in Nf is a bad choice, but the learning curve gets steep once you hit the mainland. Although it isn't a bad choice, you get to get accustomed to the heroes earlier on which will help you.
As far as getting new skills/weapons/armors. Simple. Play through the game. By playing through the game you can accumulate enough money to buy skills and weapons and armor.
Skills can be bought at any skill trader that are located throughout the game.
Weapons can be either bought from other players or dropped as loot. High lvl enemies means better the loot.
Armor is always a first, make sure you get max level armor. It can be obtained in NF at the Consulate Docks mission.

So now that you've had your lecture about playing through the game, yes it is good advice to take the slower road through prophecies. GW is not like traditional MMOs where high-level means having a better character, in fact, by the time you reach level 20 you're really only getting started with the game.
Many of us have years of experience with the game and with how to modify characters for all the situations you'll find yourself in.
First things first, play through the game slowly, be willing to make mistakes, learn. Buy skills at the trader, read the descriptions in the quest windows and learn the game's mechanics. It takes a long time and that's part of the fun.
The best way to learn the game's mechanics is by playing through prophecies because it teaches you all aspects of the game over a very broad series of missions and quests, all put in there for your fun.
As well as being a long hard slog, prophecies is still, at least in my opinion and that of many seasoned players, the best gw experience. Sure, bring your heroes along, bring your overpowered skills but you'll only really learn how to play when you take it slowly, just like anything worth doing in life.
There's loads of resources you can use like the search facility in these forums or the wikis like pvxwiki for builds, guildwiki and guildwars wiki (the official one) for general game information.
http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
There's plenty of other resources out there for your learning pleasure. Top specced weapons and armour are available all over the place, but rare stuff needs to be found, generally in the more difficult areas. Good luck and enjoy.

See, I'd recommend just playing through Nightfall. You're not going to get armor, weapons, or skills for your Dervish playing through Prophecies. Plus I find that the learning curve in Prophecies is too slow...until you get to the Crystal Desert. Where, chances are, you're going to be under-armed and the henchmen really are not as strong as they should be. Nightfall has the best learning curve and difficulty curve of the three games, I feel, as there's not a huge jump in difficulty moving from the island to the mainland (unlike Factions, where the difficulty spike is huge).
So my advice would be to simply play through Nightfall. It's not difficult to get enough money and materials for max armor in that game, which you can get pretty quickly (I have nothing to confirm this, but in my experience, I always get far more drops in Nightfall than the other games). As you get further you'll gain access to more skills, and enemies will drop better weapons.

Well Nightfall has some good material drops in my opinion, from there you can sell em off for some money. And im pretty sure if you get masters in the missions you get some money too, with that you can get money plus a nice title!

If I understand you correctly, you want to get rich with your derv?
There's 2 things they're good at...farming & running.
1. This build is my favourite for running. Try stuff like Droks, EoTN tours etc...they can all be done with this (with minor tweaks if you are new to running to make it more friendly). Run people around and charge 'em money to do it.
2. This build works for farming stuff in UW. Keep in mind that the margin for error here is very low.
There's plenty more if you look around...which brings me to my next point.
Search the forums for similar threads, look at Wiki & try to figure stuff out for yourself before coming to forums to be spoonfed. Its going to help you in the long run, and people here tend to be very rude when people come here without making any effort to help themselves.
Good luck with your derv.

This may sound silly, but if you're gonig to play through a campaign, Nightfall is the only one with Dervish weapon drops, Dervish skills, and Dervish armor (GW:EN as well, but it's not a full campaign)..
