an assassin katana question.....
The assassin is a great class. some weakness to its healing abilities and the evade from what preview stats were is a joke. but played right is fair.
I wanted to get a katana sense it is a traditional weapon for a assassin.
1 a katana is a traditional 2 light weight handed weapon.
As the only way to use a katana is A/W or A/ME ( IW build ), what are you going to use for your offhand?.... A sheild? LMAO
use an offhand with a mild energy boost and joke of armour buff and a req you can't meet?
go caster and not use any skills but spells?
An assasin with a sheild. lol its a ninja/warrior. or armourless samuri with warriors heart.
Why not make katana's a 2 handed weapon 80% of daggers dmg ( 11-27 dmg ) and leave it as a sword/dagger req. after all the eguivalent of a warrior in asia is a samuri ( sheildless tank ).
Would be a smarter decision.

this is not intended as a flame but i believe you have Assassins confused with Ninja's
though the asn is a Ninja, just in general all asn skills are based off of primarily dual wield weapons...
im not going to pretend I know my martial weapons or anything but the traditional katana can be used single or dual wield but typically was not idea for an assassin build because of its size there is a shorter version of the katana that was more so used for dual wielding as well as tanto's and such...
and i do agree with you on the making 2hd assin weapons... where are the nunchas(sp?) trifold ones to as well as the chains and of corse bo staves...
they could have been tied more directly to the different assasin abbilitis making dager mastery more like expertise or strength...
offhand attacks with 2hd weapons could be kicks and throws... where are those anyhow... i see palm attacks and such but no throws.... the assassin should definately have more poison and knockdown attacks for sure...
sharpen blades could have an equal... Poison Blades
offhand attacks again could be a combination of throws(knockdowns)
making assassins a but more effective and allowing more diversity in the skill structure...
imo assassins still need a bit of work... their armor is that of a distance fighter yet they require close combat for most of thier moves....
i kinda wish their were more shadow skills that allowed for in and out attacking making them more of a distance fighter...
attacks that are activated froma rangers distance that shadow step in and shadow step back...
the calss should ahve been more designed for distance melee attacks

Because the game is not designed to support a 2-handed sword. Besides, 80% of a daggers dmg would be 8-13ish, not 11-27

.......Now that you mention it, a Katana + Wakizashi skin would be pretty sweet.
Definitely not the right look but are Shiro's Daggers the same length?

if your going to make certain swords two handed, they should have hammer damage, not swords, since you cant then carry an added offhand
would almost have to be hammer class, or a hybrid of hammer and swords skills... but the damage would have to be on par with other two handed weapons.. or the build wouldnt make alot of sense under the current game mechanics

so your saying that a two handed katana would be swung as slow as a hammer?
i understand what your trying to say, however thats why he said it would only deal 80%, im sure he meant 80% of a hammer's damage... i would hope

we are talking graphic vs mechanic here
it is completely feasable to have a sword graphic for 2hd wield... aka sword skin for hammer
and for that weapon type to mechanically work like a 1hd weapon aka xx-22 or 28 dmg
hell it doesn't even need to be a 2hd graphic it could be a 2hd weapon req with a 1hd weapon graphic...

sorry if i wasn't clear.. 2 daggers 7-17dmg each multiply by 2 and take 80% of that number thus the dmg amount. equild dmg to the daggers fast as a sword and less dmg then a hammer. thats balance.
and still if a assassin can only use a sword as A/W what is he to carry in the offhand.lol
are we going to get shadow idols? LMAO

i wouldn't agree on hammer speed but equil to sword speed. the dmg is reduced due to a 2hand weapon, and is light weight. I'd keep at 1.33

I think one advantage Anet could implement with using a katana with no offhand/shield would be an attack speed and energy buff of some sort... 15-22 but with a default 33% attack speed boost and +5 energy or maybe even +1 pip of energy regen.... I'd be happy with that ^.^
Anet could also implement a different action sequence when attacking with a Katana or Shinobi blade: sorta like in this vid ;p
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uAmLleTf0Y
(this vid was taken at the Ninja Museum in Iga Ueno - enjoy ^.^)
On another note, the Katana wouldn't really be considered as the traditional weapon of choice for assassins, as it is more-so the main weapon for Samurai. (Though it does look super cool ;p) Assassins/Ninja would most likely tend to use something a bit smaller, like daggers, shuriken, kunai, and maybe even the supposedly ficticious Shinobigatana/Ninjato short sword... This preference to small weapons is due to the environment that they do their job in; areas such as inside houses and other confined spaces.... Smaller weapons also provide Assassins/Ninja with greater mobility... Short swords worn on the back, daggers/shuriken/kunai kept on waists/hidden pockets, etc... The less protrusions, the better.

nah that would overpower a warrior. and 33% attack speed is ungodly amount to think of.
I propose 80% of double the dagger dmg (7-17 x 2 x.80= 11-27dmg )
a 2 handed sword/dagger requirement..( I will explain )
no added regen, a possible +energy buff ( crafted or gold drop)
2mod ability
and 1.33 attack speed.
Why am i saying Sword/Dagger mastery req...
The katana is a traditional weapon of both the assasin(ninja) and a warrior(samuri) thus it is a primary weapon of both classes.
making any class who takes assassin or warrior as a secondary to max attributes at 12.
only the assassin and warrior can achieve lvl 16 in attributes.( this is only for the dmg% relation scale due to attribute vs requirment )
this allows only these 2 classes to utilize the max dmg ofthe weapon. It is a true ability for both classes to wield the same weapon.
warrior thru sword attributes.
Assasin thru dagger master attributes.
this will not overpower a warrior or assassin. a warrior may still use dagger master for attacks with a katana but sense runes can only use up to a lvl 12 attribute in dagger and an assasin to use a sword atack for the weapon but with max sword skill attribute lvl of 12.
if anything it will weaken the tanks armour slightly but give it a fast pace 2hand weapon with dmg skills from both classes. basically adding a decent aoe to swords and better critical strike spikes for an assassin to counter his lack of armour.

having that high of dmg from a weapon for an assassin specializing in dager mastery most have around 15 giving them a 30% chance to dbl strike with a 17-28 dmg weapon +the dmg bonus from 15 dagger mastery plus whatever skills the assassin is using...
something like that could easily make an assassin over powered... if it is left that the assassin can still dbl strike with it... i mean we are now talking damage in the min range of 56 upwards to over 100 with crits involved and attacks like death blossom...

not quite. death blossom is an aoe dual attack and has to be pulled off in a chain. assassins have to be played smart one miss/block ruins your chain.
and unlike a tank you still can't take dmg the same way.
holding a dual hand eliminates sheild stance.
final thrust is the only way you would spike extremely high.
Double strikes only trigger when no skill is used.
can the assassin cain a few better combos and 1 or 2 more spike chains... yes.
but the assassin lack is in armour as well as strength which give the warrior a natural armour penetration.
catch 22.
I just propose a change to the katana to use the weapon and balance the dmg and usability to both classes that would weild them.
right now a katana is near useless to an assassin when its a traditional weapon.
