Survivor as an Assassin
How's it done?
I was thinking some sort of Critical Barrager would keep me further out of the fray.
Part of me just wants to say "Pft, forget that" but another part of me is really interested in making it work, at least to level 1.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Here's a few pointers.
1. Try to get into parties that have monks and maybe a tank and nuker of some sort.
2. Play a build that uses some sort of shadow stepping to get you out of the fray so you can heal up for another go.
3. If you play your assassin smart you shouldnt have too much to worry about (assuming your team isnt a bunch a dumbass tankers with no concept of "tactics")
4. Equip your assassin with the highest armor that you can afford/get at your current status in the game.
5. Take henchies or maybe get a friend to power level you for some easy XP.
6. Like you said a crit barrager would be good....but if your starting at lvl 1 thats not gonna happen for a while. Maybe stick with critical arrows with degen (something like sharpen daggers, apply poison for some easy degen).
7. Always take more than one set of weapon(s). I would suggest a set of daggers (preferably 2) and then a +30 hp sword and +30 hp sheild in case your in a tight spot and need to get outta there.
That's all i got for now. Hope it helps...

I got to ~400 000 exp as my 'sin before I went afk with vamp daggers...
Screw critical Barraging - learn to pull well, wait for aggro to settle then dive in with a fast, high-damage combo with a low recharge that you can use to slaughter the PvE mobs quickly (I went Unsuspecting --> Wild --> Critical for the most part).
Set up your heroes with *good* builds (no mending Koss plx) - plenty of interrupts is good as AI is a beast with 'em, and bring plenty of high damage AoE heros/hench.
Learn to use/abuse AI and all you need is Feigned Neutrality for emergencies.
EDIT - And... Do try to avoid random PuGs as much as possible. Without trying to sound like a jerk... Most PuGs simply aren't as good as a hero/hench team you've equipped and specced yourself. The AI won't ragequit, refuse to heal, aggro everything or cast mending... or any of the other stupid crap real people do.

Take a look at Yanassasin build for Melee.
Here is another melee build (but make sure that you don't overstay your welcome):
A/W:
Unsupecting Strike

Yes, I have no elite (but what can you do )
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips, guys!
And yes, I'm certainly planning to pop on over to Nightfall in order to unlock all the Heroes. Nothing against good human players, but if I'm going to need to retreat if things look hairy, I at least want to be courteous to other players and not bring their experience down. It's going to take a while, and I'll need to be cautious about everything. But that's half of what I'm looking forwards to.
I think I do want to go with some sort of melee survival build, as was suggested earlier. Even though I'm going for self-preservation, I still need to learn how to play an assassin, and that means getting in close for the rough 'n tumble.
Thanks for your suggestions, everyone! Now what sorts of armor/runes should I be looking to get with this dude?

Armour... I generally use +health armour. And... minor runes in all the attributes you plan on using, with the best vigor rune you can afford. With a higher health, monsters generally seem less prone to attacking you. Also, apart from a few builds, superior runes generally aren't worth the health penalty for a PvE 'sin.

[skill]Recall[/skill] or [skill]Shadow Meld[/skill]
use shadow meld/recall before you go in (recall on a backline caster like a monk) if you start taking too much damage, cancel the enchant and heal up. shadow meld is nice as it doesnt require someone else to stay alive for you to use it, you just teleport back to the original spot you used it at.

Ha shadow meld is great fun, in AB shadow stepping right back to a shrine after luxons capture it, or in a mission going back to the beginning of the mission....because you forgot to refresh it
