For me Factions is shorter. I would bring an assassin through Factions first.
I just brought my rit through in the last few days - what I did was get off starter island in Factions, get some heroes in NF, go back to factions and get them levelled and do only primary quests.... very fast and good fun.

The paragon is the easiest class to play with the new SS and Faction skills. I started a paragon 2 weeks ago and so far everything is a breeze. I decided to play in hard mode, but with the "god mode" skills, I can blatantly aggro 3 groups including bosses and still survive. It's extremely boring, since I just stand there shouting and doing my normal attack.
Personally, I found the assassin to be the most fun to play, although the assassin is probably one of the least useful characters in PvE. Most other classes are mind-numbing, just doing 1 or 2 skills over and over again. But the assassin you have to actually be aware of what is happening or you would die.

paragons are awesome partner up with a minion master, take a gfte/tntf build, and you will be nearly unstoppable

"The Power Is Yours!" is quite possibly the most underused elite in the game.

Assassin through nightfall is more fun imo. Longer, and nothing exploding on our face.

I'm more then half way through NF with my Paragon. The Motivation or Command line is very helpful to most of the major roles in a party. Also, some spear skills are very useful for taking down enemies quickly.
Assassins on the other hand are very lethal as well. I would choose an Assassin over a paragon for the spike damage if using a well planned build to shadow step in, unleash a chain, then shadow step out.
In the end, it's what you feel like playing. Both of these classes a great to play if you like to play a support role or an offensive role.

Sins are way cooler to play then Paras.
Besides, sin=damage, para=support.
Now, you want to deal damage or support a group?

yea Id have to go with a sin thru factions than a paragon. Id rather strike someone than be in the back lines as a support character.

Paragons are incredibly easy if you know how to use them. Doing most missions with 2 hench healers and most of my party squishy hench/heroes, I rarely see anyone drop below 50% health. Like someone else said, the fact that you can aggro 2 or 3 groups and still live is a bit silly at times. Did this the other day with torment creatures and never saw my party in danger of being wiped.

I guess the bigger question is:
Do you have a hope of getting into PvE pugs with either?
