Assassin - Just go wiki Assassin's Creed (Good game btw).
However, GW Assassin is based on mystical Ninjas. Whatever movies/other crap you watch, drop it right now. Stereotypes = fail. Ninjas kill silently, preferring to stab you in the back or just poison you. Any "underhanded" tactics, as long as it gets the job done. Real Ninjas don't charge into battle like a Berserker with a fat sword. Real Ninjas actually use short weapons. Katana is so popular because the predominant western image of Japanese Samurai = Katana, which is true, but it is also tied to Ninjas as well since a guy with big fat sword looks hell a lot cooler.
China has no ninjas. Although all Japanese martial arts are based from Chinese martial arts, so there is an indirect relationship.

True assassins need only four things:
- A target to kill.
- A tall building.
- A Sinper Rifle.
- Ammo and what not.
I doubt even Shield of Regeneration could prevent that death.

A true ninja used a ninja-to as a basic weapon, which is comparable to a wakizashi (samurai secondary weapon - short sword) but straight, not curved. Its sheath was often used as a club, as well.

The Hashishin were an muslim sect. The Assasins in factions are not inspired by them.
The GW Assasin is supposed to be Ninja.
The Katana is an Japanese sword used by the Samurai, the Samurai were during feudal Japan nobel warriors serving the lord. They were the only ones allowed to wear the Katana. Because of that, and because the katana were very expensive the Ninja clans did not use the Katana, or the Wakizashi which only nobilty wore. The Wakizashi was an backup weapon and used for executions(on the battlefield) and Seppuku. The Wakizashi was worn by the Samurai at all times, it could be worn when the Katana had to be put away.
The Ninja did fought with many weapons, not all very well made. Bujinkan(seen by many as the last ninja ryu(school, style)) train 18 Styles.
The 18 disciplines are:
1. Seishin-teki kyōyō (spiritual refinement)
2. Taijutsu (unarmed combat, using one's body as the only weapon)
3. Kenjutsu (sword fighting)
4. Bōjutsu (stick and staff fighting)
5. Shurikenjutsu (throwing shuriken)
6. Sōjutsu (spear fighting)
7. Naginatajutsu (naginata fighting)
8. Kusarigamajutsu (kusarigama fighting)
9. Kayakujutsu (pyrotechnics and explosives)
10. Hensōjutsu (disguise and impersonation)
11. Shinobi-iri (stealth and entering methods)
12. Bajutsu (horsemanship)
13. Sui-ren (water training)
14. Bōryaku (military strategy)
15. Chōhō (espionage)
16. Intonjutsu (escaping and concealment)
17. Tenmon (meteorology)
18. Chi-mon (geography)
I would say the Anets ninja are better than many other depictions of the Ninja and Anet are not calling them ninjas and GW is a fantasyworld.
Take look at wikipedia, it does not say, but alittle:

I don't think Chinese warriors had any code binding them such as the Bushido of the samurai, and hence there was no real need to hire specialized ninja-type fighters unlike Japanese warlords, whose samurai's actions would've been bound to such a code, which I think regards some things as dishonorable, while shinobi would have used whatever means necessary.

I think they are more than badass enough.
Sins are generally not suited for using sword skills since it takes too long to prep up a spike with adrenaline and only one sword skill deals deepwound. Besides, you don't have enough armor to stay alive long enough to build up the adrenalines anyways, especially if your not gonna use a shield like you said. Also like Coloneh stated, daggers are simply faster with double strike meaning better energy management with critical strikes. Personally I feel that daggers are the only weapons capable of bringing out the full capacities of assassins, but if you want to experiment with other weapons thats perfectly fine but just don't expect it to work out so well like what you saw in the movies.

Yea, assassin gets 12 sword and shiro's blades need 13 sword. Nice dmg coming.

Assassin and Ninja are different ''professions''. In the history of Japan, a ninja ninja was someone specially trained in a variety of unorthodox arts of war. These included assassination, espionage, and other martial arts. (assassin)
The term 'Assassin' derives from Hashshashin, a militant Ismaili Muslim sect, active in the Middle East from the eighth to the fourteenth centuries. This mystic secret society killed members of the Abbasid and Seljuq élite for political and religious reasons.
The action of assassinating; the taking the life of any one by treacherous violence, esp. by a hired emissary, or one who has taken upon him to execute the deed - and sometimes itself too (bad assassin or rampaging wammo)

ninja use katanas and throwing knives/stars, they follow material arts i gues.
assassin... in the dictionary term is someone that kills a politcal figure. o.O unlike ninjas assassins are basical killing machines use w/e weapon w/e terran w/e advantage as long as they have their target dead.... i dont think they follow any type of "material arts" or fighting rules, they kill and thats their job, how... doesnt matter how
so... taticaly.... assassin can be a dressed like a hobo with a broken wine bottle... so long as its an advantage for him and he kills his target he will be a hobo (plus daggers are easy to conceal , so assassin in most games or rogues or theifs they got daggers or other small weapons)
and assassins are much cooler =D they drug them selves before going into battle (said so on wiki, assassin or hashashin search) to be calm emotionless and not feel pain =D they become inhuman killing machines =D
ps. daggers arent that bad. one game had assassin have throwing knives/stars only, another knives. o.O and in God Father there was an assassin with a shotgun (i think) =D

In the history of Japan, a ninja (忍者, ninja) was someone specially trained in a variety of unorthodox arts of war. These included assassination, espionage, and other martial arts.
An assassin is a murderer who is politically motivated or contracted.
Thats right, straight from wikipedia

And so therefore either an assassin or a ninja may use any tool or weapon necessary available. therefore, katana, daggers, broadsword, or bazooka can be used, but the general idea of both is that they operate silently and therefore use smaller weapons, like daggers or knives. or handguns. bazooka assassin, oh yeah

Assassin's are closer to mercenarys than Ninja's IMO.
If you are hired to kill and thats your profession your really an assassin
If your hired to serve as a bodyguard/protection/soldier your a mercenary (a bit off)
Ninjas....are just wierd >.>
