I know quite a few places, but where do they drop the most?

q7 max doesnt drop anymore.

Most q8 max golds drop in areas that are nearly 600g chest areas.
examples are maguuma jungle,crystal desert, kaineng city areas(canthan chests) and kourna region in nf.

they also drop in 600g chest areas but to a lesser extent.

HM has lowest chances of q8 max gold

agreeing more or less with above.
saw few r8 gold max shields drop in canthan areas near Vermin and Plagueborn foes... in nm ofc.

Have any good routes in maguuma jungle? Id consider running 100picks there and seeing what i get. I recall the enemies are fairly low level. Do max items often drop?

Reed bog is the best and fastest imo. you have to run to it but once you're there just zone back and forth between the falls and ettin's back.
Take the western route and bring iau for cripple.

edit: max does not drop all too often. Definitely less than canthan areas.

The one thing I've found is NM is key. I haven't seen any direct correlation with regards to location personally. I've had plenty of r8's drop from the RoF islands in NM. But my favourite was always the desert in Tyria.

I ran 6K chests hells precipice NM post NF, not a single q8 drop.
