Fake Sales - The New In Thing ?
Been noticing lately some new wannabe's posting fake sale prices on worthless crap and far from valuable items. Is this to be the future of guild wars trading ? There has always been some manipulation but this is getting stupid. No one believes the prices so why bother.
300e on a 20/9 Bo Staff that 99% of the community would throw on the ground after id'ing.....
10arms for a 20/10 Dragon worth 1 arm
Why lie ? (but, but, I has fake screenshots to prove the sale)
So where do we go from here now ? Shall we start posting screenshots of fake sales to make ourselves feel cool ?

i heard about tha this week, i was like lulz. I guess its all fake and some guys are trying to play it big when in reallity they are not. I don't really care about that kind of stuff, they just look / act stupid and yeah.... A good laugh with friend and its the end of it for me ! Old guys and experienced trader wont get affected by that. We can easily spot a fake sale / bid / c/0 from miles around !

There has ALWAYS been a number of 'fake' sales on guru, that is nothing new. (not to mention folks who have the items yet never seem to sell them---)
As always, buyer beware! If it sounds too good, it probably is, if you do not recognize the user (or they are new) then I would also have my whiskers on high alert!

I want to say that fakes sale claims are much more troublesome than having the item yet never selling it... Some of these sell claims are crazy. There are multiple sell threads currently trying to claim these staves are worth an order of magnitude more than they are... not just 1 thread. An order of magnitude more. That's nuts and not right.
Cosy, Can I make a sticky for PC section about canthan staves? I've learned a lot about them collecting them for years and might be able to provide the community with useful knowledge.
2burns I agree with you. Old guys such as ourselves (if I'm considered an old guy hahahaha) won't easily be affected by this.
But new guys who have never seen a Dragon Staff before may and that's the problem. At least once a week I get someone in game asking me what a Dragon Staff is or to see it cause they have never seen one before...

once upon a time dragon staves were hard to come by...now they drop more often. (still has a cool skin in my opinion).
I also think folks might be confusing them with the bone dragon staff which still is quite rare.
as for there being more of these fakers---I think that they are just more noticeable with their being less people posting (and less people in game too).

No disrespect but... I don't think anet has cared enough about gw in the last 3 years to change drop rates. Furthermore, I don't think they have changed drop rates of skins since the big pre/post nerf change of like 2008 or something. So I don't think drop rates are at play here. If yawg or pleikki or cleave says otherwise, I will believe it, but I really don't think it's at play here.
I think a sticky would be useful.

I know the drop rates havent changed.
I also know that when the dragon staves were a BIG thing --I NEVER had one drop for me. (originally thought to only drop during the halycon job quest). In the last year or so I have had 3 drop for me. Rates may not have changed, but there seems to be plenty more of them in circulation than a few years ago.

Whilst I agree with the point on fake c/o and fake bids, I don't think this is the sole reason for these insane prices.
It is a combination of greed from the power traders, and ignorance on prices generally.
For example r9 oni blades and dual reduction shields.
There was a big rise in the price of r8 Oni blades a year or so back, which the greedy power traders argued would push the price of a r9 up too. Therefore the traders were asking more and more for a r9+5e oni blade. They went from 15-20e to 500(!)e over the course of 3 months.
Dual reduction shields are currently going through the same change. I value a r8 -2-2 aegis at 200e. And I should know as I have bought many. The combination of greed and ignorance has led to one if these being passed round the ignorant powertraders several times recently, each one adding more greed. The last one tried to sell it for 1000e. Same shield. Also, another r8 -2-2 (for which I was the c/o for over a month) was sold for FIFTY armbraces recently. Fifty! That's 2250e for a shield I value at 500-1000e. The buyer clearly has no idea what he's doing (smells like eBay ectos). I know the seller, and he was genuinely shocked at the offer.
The over supply of ectos allows morons with too much cash to affect the sale prices by blowing astronomical amounts on items they know nothing about, especially when faced with a greedy power trader asking 20 times an item's actual value. We are facing super-inflation on prices these days.
It's a combination of these factors which is globally affecting all prices, not just staves.

Well put max. I think with the -2-2's it's a little different though cause everyone knows you collect them. And unfortunately some people bid them up to resell to you or make you pay more. I don't think people are doing the same thing with staves. It's all nuts. To your point on knowledge- I made a thread on staves to try to clarify them so people know.
And I'm sure it's all ebayed ecto. Many of these people didn't even exist a year ago and now they are dropping mega bucks.

sometimes you just gotta pay that astronomical figure to get what you want though. as we all know ectos are worthless. the real currency is the items themselves.

fake sales.... Well i wouldnt say im a hard core collector or even a power trader, the best thing i ever sold was a 20/20 staff that netted me 200e, before i left gw a few yrs ago i followed this site daily trying to learn from the great and good that were always on here. Now whether ive been unlucky and missed the usual people who price chk, ive noticed that more often than not its not members online anymore it just seems tobe guests, and very few people actually giving the pc.
I suppose what im saying is maybe the best way to combat fake sales is to educate people with good old fashioned pc's now whether thats a "sorry mate merch food " or a "nice thats worth xxe, give or take", i dont know, after being away for quite awhile ive lost track of the value of things and the best skins etc.
One thing though i found very interesting is the new post about staves, that did help me with a few things i forgot.

No problem for the staves post - That was my way of trying to combat someone's fake sale of a couple really crappy staves for orders of magnitude more than they are worth.
I think the reason we have stopped posting much on the pc thread is because 99% of the items on it are merch food now. And most of the items that aren't are items that we post. By we I mean my friends list basically. The guys who go way back - not the ones that jumped onto the scene last week or in the last 6 months, but many years.
I can't stress this one enough - Many of us also don't really want to help the people that are making the fake trades and buying ludicrous amounts of arm braces off ebay by telling them what their items are really worth - whether it be a good item or a crappy one. You would think that someone with a net worth of 100a+ would be able to tell a crappy merch food item from a good one. The fact that some people can't is just hilarious and proves that they ebayed their money.
Obviously I'm not ragging on all the posts - because not everyone falls in that category. But it seems like with each passing day it gets worse and worse. Many of us that know prices are hiding away with our items hoping the storm will end some time.
