Hi,

Recently returned to Guild Wars after several years. Never got that far in the first place, but we're working on Nightfall campaign and then EotN eventually.

Showing the game to my wife as she's never gotten a chance to experience how awesome it is.

I was wondering about ectos or "e" as everyone calls it.
Are these some kind of currency and a crafting material?

I can't really seem to get many of them. My wife wanted to craft the Obsidian armor (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Obsidian_armor) for her elementalist, but I don't really see how to get these ectos.

So I'm trying to find out where you buy them or how you can farm them?
I got one to drop when we we're in a UW group getting a black widow pet, but I only got 1 and that took an hour.

How are you supposed to get the 120 ectos needed for armor?

Rare material trader sells em. now during canthan new year is great change buy em as theyre 2-3K (platinum) below their normal price!
Also yes UW is almost only way getting them drop but its slow and hard, so better just farm cash elsewhere and buy ectos

Hello DoggieDoo,

Welcome back to the game! Concerning the obsidian armor you must realize it is supposed to be the most prestigious armor in the game and therefor the crafting materials are indeed hard to come by. However, there are several ways to obtain the necessary ecto's and obsidian shards (as you also need an equal number of those).

First way: play The Underworld and The Fissure of Woe till you drop. Just finishing the zones with heroes/henchies/friends till you have enough of both. This will take an immense amount of time.

Second way: use a specific build to farm the shards and ectos on your own (allowing you to get all the drops). A couple builds are mentioned here. Even tho it is probably not up to date, there should still be some builds that get the job done.

Third way: do other things in GW, i.e. farms, speedclears, dungeons, chesting (possibly even some PvP for zkeys) to obtain other forms of money and/or items and buy the ectos and shards from other players as theres plenty around!
The place to buy them is Kamadan, the main city of the Nightfall campaign. (ectos: 100k = 14-15e, shards: 100k = 20 shards).

P.S. Yes, ectos are used as a trading commodity. When trading items with a value over 100k (which is a lot of items these days), ectos will be added or will replace any cash payment to make a single trade possible. Other trading commodities that are used fairly widespread are Armbraces of Truth (arms) and Zaishen Keys (zkeys/zk) with respective values of 38e and 5k.

As Pleikki has stated in his post above, ecto prices actualy drop 2-3k/each during Canthan New Year festival. So they're around 14-15 for 100k at the momemt in Kamadan.

Last time I sold ectos they are at 12,5k at trader !
What happened ?
