Default New community forum to replace guru

So as the curtain comes down on our beloved guildwarsguru, we stand at a crossroads.

Somehow, and against all the odds, a small group from the Facebook page has put together a new forum which is intended to take over from guru when they pull the plug.

www.guildwarslegacy.com

Membership is growing, but it's the content that will make the difference. There will be no archive of guru, and the way back machine can't get into password protected logs. It's up to us to transfer the content from guru. Transfer your threads to the new forum now before it's too late, and we lose all the data.

Builds, maps, screenshots, collections, guides, team compositions, gameplay tactics, external links..., bring them all while we still can. There's a small window of opportunity to do this, as Curse have said they'll shut guru down sometime in June, and all the data remains their intellectual property.

The team is working on a way to import the most important threads.

Make it count, and never give up, never surrender

Max

I wanna know why make new site tho instead using the gw2guru?

Since how i see it, That new site is alot harder to be found from returning old players, and ppl coming back from gw2, Im sure gw2guru would be the site for those returning players to look, and for that reason wiser choice in my opinion to be build as the forum after gw1guru.

Because the community controls the new site and not some entity that only cares about their marketshare.

Pleikkis reason shouldn't be ignored I don't think.

Maybe there is a place for both forums?

When it comes or data, I'm planning on saving copies of the threads I deem important - think collections threads. Copying everry post would takes ages.

Yeah fear this will divide community to half and dont see that as a good thing.

For community ran things, ive only seen handful communitys strong enough to run someting well for several years, i do hope gw has such community
But for curse i dont see them shutting gw2guru down atleast before gw1 server(and gw2) is gone

I like GWlegacy for the simple fact that I won't have to feel like a leper in a community that's moved behind us (GW2).

I already get annoyed at having to explain to my friends why I still play GW 1 after so many years anyway.

If communities are active I'll use both until one is bigger or more dominant.

Just a question out there to all afraid that the community will be split through this? How many of you have been active on both GWG and Wartower (for example) over the years?

I know that I have. You can register for both forums and use the one you want to use. It will crystallize out after the initial new phase which forum will be more active and which will endure. Both forums have their pros and cons, but I have a feeling, that the GWL forum may be more flexible in terms of player input regarding functionality, forum sections, maybe even rules. The GW2 forums will be great to bring back more players to the old lady, or to improve awareness for users interested in trying out the old game (all that is needed is an official sale for the complete collection or the stand alone games to start something there).

In the end: Membership for the 2 forums is not mutually exclusive. Register for both and lets see where it goes from there.

EDIT: @Max: Any possibility of a dedicated presearing section? If you want to bring in a larger group, then you can maybe try to offer a home to the orphaned presearing.com users

Yep, certainly not looking to split the community. That would be terminal.

When the idea was born, all we had was an announcement about the closure, and nothing to indicate that we would be given space on the gw2 forum except what was said in he announcement itself. There was no section for us, for a few days. We decided to do something about that. During our discussions, Kvinna unlocked the gw2 bit, and we discussed halting, but general consensus was to continue as folks might not like being an afterthought on that forum.

Since we started, our bit on gw2 went live, but by that point the new forum was well underway, and seemed popular.

----------

Dedicated pre searing bit is a stroke of genius

Heh, I'm not in the driving seat, and no one from PhD is involved. It's being run by Richey Rollins, who is also the driving force behind the Facebook group

Cosy will moderate as before, and the rules will remain the same too.

Also, I have the computer skills of a stale potato, so wouldn't be able to implement etc anyway

----------

We'll do a presearing section, as agreed

I do agree with Pleikki. I think you went too fast in taking a decision to do something.

My personal opinion : your new forum is far to be ready, I hope it'll be improved. And just because of the theme of the forum, I don't even want to create an account. I know it's a personal feeling, but legacy forum is not easy on the eye. Answers are to be found between name, avatar and more, what make the navagition not user-friendly.

I hope anyway to see the community moving together to see the adventure going on

then why are you staff/mod on gwlegacy?
I also think pleikki should be moderater there aswell
we should also bring the proffesion build section there aswell so people can post builds there.

Id love ikki to be a mod.

I'm a mod because... Well, because I was the second or third person to register and Kevin just promoted me. I'm not intending to do anything moddy. I'll ask Kevin to un-mod me if it'll help.

----------

And it's very much a work in progress. It will evolve and change over time.

----------

There's even talk of a complete custom design from the ground up, which will take some time to implement. Be patient while we figure that out.

And we're still looking at bringing content across.... But I have no idea how that might work.

that would deff put me on board if you get un-modded.

@dwa:I actually really like the color scheme on gwlegacy. I really like darkened themes since its easier on the eyes.

thing is tho as someone mentioned before,it will probably split the community in half, and the community shouldnt really split more up.
But if we were to go to gw2guru a moderater from gw1 should be allowed to add sections to look like gw1 having a own section and not a fraction on that site.

It doesnt matter which option people go with, either way returning players wont know where to go. At least with our own solution we can make it as we like and advertise and push it. We arent restricted.
I told some people yesterday that the GW1 section was now up on GW2Guru and they couldnt find it. I had to specifically point it out to them because it isnt clear and we are literally flung in as an afterthought. That isnt a solution.

Kevin here, technical guy behind Legacy.

Max is not in charge - the only reason he has the [Staff] rank is because he is helping us set the site up. There will be other moderators too, in fact, we're still working on that. Everybody who was a mod here and you guys feel should be a mod too, will probably become a mod too. Give us some time.
All big decisions will be made together - we're not going to allow people to go crazy with power

Already added! You can find it on https://www.guildwarslegacy.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=26. Still need to add some child forums though, but working on it right now !

I understand your feelings - we were doubting to release it as soon as we did, but we felt it for the best to get started as soon as we can. That way, we can try to recover as much content as we can.
We're working hard on improving the site, don't worry on that. We're working together with people to include their own resources/tools into our site to provide things that Guru hasn't got. I'm also working on a theme that will solve the issues that you have - I used an available theme to get the site up and running as soon as possible. Once you have registred though, you can pick another theme which will solve your issues (it'll have a light/dark setting for example).

The people with staff ranks are people that are currently helping us out getting the site ready - be it with content creation/recruitment, technical stuff or more general stuff. Once everything is done, the staff ranks will probably be redistributed to those who effectively do day to day tasks.
Moderators (which is a different rank compared to staff) will be added soon. If you feel you're up to the job and if you have a good track record here, I don't see why it should be an issue to get the same rank at Legacy.

The profession build section is currently being discussed and will be added soon. Right now we've splitted it in between PvE/PvP, but more is coming soon obviously.

In general, I feel it best to not put Guild Wars content on a Guild Wars 2 site. They are completely different, the only thing they share is the name. I wouldn't go looking for GW content on a GW2 site. I simply wouldn't think about it. And how would it work good on a site completely dedicated to GW2? It's out of place and it doesn't belong there. But that's just my feeling.

- Kev
