Default New IRC Channel to Form PUGs!

ADMINS: PLEASE STICKY!

First of all, the concept behind all of this was spawned by Kyo Yuy during our discussion of the unbearable time it takes to form a successful tombs PUG.

GOALS: The goals of this channel is to offer a common meeting place and chat channel to discuss and form Pick Up Groups, strategies, different builds, and anything related to Guild Wars (the main focus being on PUGs). It will be a much easier place to meet people, form relationships, and see who is LFG across districts, zones, and what not. Tired of hopping from district to district trying to find a group for Tombs? What if you wouldnt mind doing several different things (IE Fissure/UW/Tombs/something) instead of going to all the respective places to announce that you are LFG, the channel serves as a gathering nexus for all of us LFG. IRC doesnt take much bandwidth, and is a lot more efficient then trying to wade through GW chat. It is only JUST being set up, but I hope that this will be a successful and appealing endeavor.

FUTURE PLANS:
1) Some sort of script that is easily accessible from within the IRC Channel via a BOT where people LFG can for example let a BOT know that they are looking for a group, their class, and a small phrase of what they want to do (IE tombs, underworld, fissure, etc.) Then people forming a group could query the bot as to which classes and whatnot are LFG and easily contact the person. This is a concept only so far, but the idea sounds good, no? I am a programmer but not skilled in mIRC scripting, so if anyone with more knowledge is interested in helping out with a project such as this, let me know.

2) Perhaps some sort of feedback/rating system where if a group encounters a "bad apple", that person could be issued some sort of feedback rating within the bot mentioned above so that future groups could be wary when grouping with the individual, and of course positive feedback/ratings. Of course some sort of system would need to be in place to prevent people from artificially boosting or dropping somebodies feedback/rating, (perhaps a certain number of people who have to simultaneously concurr on the rating/feedback IE the other group members or something) but if it could be prevented, it would not be a bad idea. AGAIN these are all concepts at the moment, but something I hope to implement in the future.

3) MAYBE some sort of GWPUGs ventrilo server with a set number of channels for groups to utilize or something similar to this. This would be the least likely idea to be realized, however, unless it is extremely feasible considering bandwidth and money (or donations?) however this can be discussed upon later.

How to get on the channel?

First of all you will need some sort of IRC (Internet Relay Chat) client, the most popular of which is mIRC (www.mIRC.com). Once downloaded and installed, run the program, then click the Tools menu item, and select Options... This will bring up a dialogue box. Fill in your information then go to the servers part. From the list choose "GameSurge: Random US Server"..then click connect to server. IF all goes well a bunch of stuff should scroll past your screen and you should be connected. Then type "/join #GWPUGs" into the window and hit enter and you should join the channel. I DO NOT BELIEVE it is necessary to register your nick on this server, but if somehow you are
unable to join the server or what not, you may need to register (www.gamesurge.net).

Thats all for now. Remember this is just starting up so there may not be a large number of people at first, but hopefully it will pick up. Also hopefully in the near future the scripts I was talking about earlier will be in place and ready for use. Rules have NOT currently been set up or discussed about as of yet, but they will be soon. For now please no unappropriate behaviour, uncalled for spamming, and that sort of stuff or you may be banned.

Until the script system is in place, or perhaps it may never be but we will see, some sort of color scheme will be utilized and a SET "SPAM" rate to advertise yourself as LFG etc. to set them apart from normal chats. In the future I hope to "recruit" more channel ops to help out with the administration and what not.

I've been looking for a channel like this for quite some time now... and while I've found several GW-oriented channels, none have anything going on but a bunch of idlers. And since I'm not an IRC snob, I don't care where it is located as long as it does the job. Thanks for starting something like this up.

actually this is a really great idea. I'll definately swing by the next time I need a PUG. and I'll look into what variables would be needed for the BOT you speak of. Depending on the difficulty and time required I might be able to script it.
