I like World of Warcraft's system of leader-defined guild ranks. The leader can create any number of ranks, name them what he/she wishes, and determine individually what each rank is allowed to do. WoW is the only game besides GW in which I've been a guild leader, but I think there are other games that do this too. It's something I'd definately love to see here.

yea, i mean, its really annoying being a guild leader myself, to have everyone doing as they please, officers can seemingly do almost as much as the guild leader, its really unethical

Officers have too much power
I agree with this as well. I have only one officer in my guild right now...my wife! lol. Anyone, else I don't know personally and it worries me that someone has so much power over the guild. It would be nice to have a customizing option, someone that recurite members would be great!

Or even special rights you can assign to a specific member
Like this member can change the guild message, but cannot invite anyone, or this other guy is only allowed to invite people, etc..

officers should only be allowed to recruit new members..........nothing else.........leave it to the guild leader..........thats why we have a leader right?

Yes, there should be advanced permissions. So you can for example configure it so they cannot make someone else an officer.

I think this idea of having different tiers is great. One of the officers in my guild told me how a guild he was in in WoW had like 6 or 7 tiers from the leader to recruiters to member and even initiates. But if this is not possible in this game then at least making it so officers cant promote or that only certain officers can recruit would make it seemed more structured. To me the only thing i can do that an officer cant do is disband the guild and designate a different leader, which in my mind doesnt make an leader that much better then an officer. Other then power and politics, the current tiers in the guild works and I agree with Sybban that you should know who your inviting and not just invite everyone.

The name of the game is Guild Wars, you'd think the guilds would be a little more.. complex than they are now, yes? I personally think this is a big problem.

Not big, HUGE. For a game that looks as if it should really focus on Guilds, it does surprisingly little. And just allowing the Guild Leader to customize the positions and priveleges of each would be the best option

Still, Leader has ability to kick player off the guild. Set a rule and if they don't follow the rule. kick them off. It's not about being good or bad. it's about enjoy the guild life by following guildlines.
I think it's great that officer and guild leader have similar power. It doesn't make leader to feel all mighty. Less power tripping..

guild wars... GUILD wars! GUILD!!!
yes... I'm 100% in agreement here. Likewise they should make the guild hall as full and complex an area as any other single portion of the map that 8 people will travel together or as full and complex at least as Lion's Arch. Likewise the guild hall should have tons of options available like training grounds, PvP (for the guild only), strategy chalk boards, a merchant, a bank, a message board, loads of stuff!

More titles is cool...

Or how about you only allow people you trust not to be an idiot become your guild officer?
This game's guild system does need work..but give them a chance, this game has only been out a month.

Luckily, our guild is small and we all know each other in one way or another (outside of the game).
I would love to see various ranks of Guild Officer though.. with permissions, set by the leader. As our guild grows, I was planning to make officers of those who are much more knowledgable of the game, so that they may help the other members (and other members would recognize these members by their officer title) - but without having the permissions to say, change the announcement, or kick people out of the guild. To be able to give jobs under officer as "moderator" and "recruiter" would be nice too (by setting ranks).
I'd also love to also see some "Co-founder" or "Vice-President" type of guild job as well, since the guild I run is actually founded by two of us, but the co-founder is just an officer.
