If you want the game to be harder, then just do as other people have said:
Enter missions or areas with less than the maximum number of people, possibly going down to solo level (but that's probably not necessary for making things hard
You even get rewarded with better drops for this!

Ugh. If you've actually read my posts about trying to improve the situation of PvE, you'd eventually realize that imposing artificial limitations on yourself still creates the same situation - too much repetition and staleness. Perhaps you need to play this game more. You don't need disruption in PvE, your tactics remain the same since the very first mission, and that gets old fast.
PvE is BORING and STALE and requires changes, especially to the mob AI.
Maps are static. Mobs are static. You see a clump of hydras. You see a clump of scarabs. They always blindly rush you.
PvE is a game of how well you can PULL without aggroing anything else. That's it.
So what if I'm alone, or in a group of 6? or 8? I'll just pull a little more slowly, heal/tank/nuke a little more effectively.
Is there anything else we can do besides heal/tank/nuke? That's one of the biggest issues.

Yes, I know. So does any other solution, including the ones you have mentioned.
I'm not advocating against other solutions, for they will extend the time until stale situations, but that's all anything can do.
Single player content will become stale and old, practically inherently to its nature.
That said, I'd be happy for better PvE. But that requires large amounts of work by the developers, and I'm not sure it's something I'd choose for them to work on anytime soon. I can (and in other places have) name many improvements I consider more important.
