I read 'em, but this idea that RPG's need to be one person pretending like they are something else is just a bit over-the-edge to me if not down right insane.
I don't dislike reality quite that much. I like fantasy but I'm still Chad and I'm still from Naples, Florida...lol...

But some of us want to immerse ourselves in the experience of being our characters - for a few hours a day I want to be Iceciro Avant, from Lion's Arch, master of freezing my enemies and hater of Ettins, instead of Chad, from Tennessee (Yeah, my name is Chad too, how wierd!!!)

It is amazing the amount of people who don't grasp what roleplaying is.
It is not a form of devil worship.
It is not a way of escaping reality because a person doesn't like reality.
If you go to the movies - you are escaping reality.
If you watch TV shows - you are escaping reality.
If you read books - you are escaping reality.
Roleplaying allows you to control the story... you become the hero or heroine in the movie, book or TV show ('cept it is in a game, or with a group using PnP).
I have roleplayed since 1975 and I never once would consider myself odd, a geek, or someone who hated reality.

Roleplaying is pretending to be someone else. In Guildwars, whatever your avatar is. There is nothing weird about it. Lots of people like pretending to be someone else, sometimes.
Most Guild Wars players speak and act as if they are the humans at the other end of a computer network; not as if they are Krenda Sol, fiery mage of great power.
In short, DrSlugFly gave a really pretty good description and example:
When someone asks, "Where are you from?", the reasonable answer is, "Ashord" or "Green Hills", not "Florida" or "Boston". Boston doesn't exist when you are pretending to be from Green Hills.

Normal?
Well, I'm new here, but I can tell you that I really enjoy Guild Wars.
Anyways, In response to some people saying RPer's aren't "Normal", honestly, who is normal? Aren't we all unique?
Most of us play video games to relieve stress or for something to do. I would just like to say there is no "normal' in definite terms.
So please, let people have their freedom, and lay off the conformity crap.
On the topic of an RP district, personally I think that idea is genius. Most people don't play RPG's like the name intends, they just play it as an "outsider". A district free of the "normal" people would be a blessing. But that's only my opinion

I play in the international districts all the time, only going into the local ones to buy runes+the other stuff from the special traders there. Why are there no rune traders in the international districts anyway? (not enough people there to buy the stuff at an overhiked price IMO)
Its not that I RP. I personally think its a tad silly. Do what you like though, you payed for the game and you don't annoy the piss out of me.
Unlike 'WTS blah blah blah, peice of garbage I found in the underworld but hopefully I can rip off some newb with it' being spammed in the regular chat channel. There is a trade channel! USE IT! (Do I sound annoyed? Its because I am)
So basically, I like the international districts for peace and quiet, henchmen are generally better than most 12-year old zit-faced losers anyway. I like the lack of lag there too. Doesn't take 30 seconds to load and its easier than moving round LA when over 1000 people are there. You can actually see the traders.
I would love to see a RP district. I think arenanet cares less and less about that aspect of the game unfortunately.
What would be even better is a few districts dedicated to morons.

You forgot one...
If you play a VIDEO GAME - you are escaping reality.
I'm not a RPer, but I can understand the idea. I can see the want for a place to do this, but realize that it will end up getting flooded with people trying to ruin it, since they will be able to easily find thier targets.

What benefit is having an RP district/town going to do? All it will be is just another area that Non-NPG'ers will come into. You have no way of keeping them out, so why bother trying to make things harder than have to be?

What will be good is if your a trader and spend most of your time as a trader then you become a trader no more fighting skills and have trader gear on that will put a stop to it

I don't see flames or hostility, it's not like it's getting out of hand. It's healthy arguement, where everyone is debating their point. Maybe the choice of words could be better, but it's not personal, at least it doesn't seem that way.

One thing that just came to mind...I think possibly it's better having International 1 as an unofficial RP district. An official district might well attract more trolls than RPers.

If you kids must have a official "Role Playing" town then why not just make it at your guild hall? (you do have one of those don't you?) At least you wouldn't have to worry about "non-role players" invading...

Unfortunately, a guild hall doesn't make a good RP "town" since only your guildies can come. What if you want to invite someone else or just meet some new people?

Example of roleplaying from another game, long and convoluted, as can be expected from diplomatic prattle, but take from it what you will (do note none of this was preplanned and was spur of the moment... just as the rest of this particular game was):

You say 'Nay.'
Isabeau nods.
You say 'Even if he was, I doubt he would attack me.'
You chuckle politely.
Isabeau says 'Go ahead.'
You say 'Aye. I believe you know the suspicions of the late Patriarch Namaste of Rheydin?'
Isabeau says 'Suspicions?'
Isabeau says 'You best repeat them.'
You say 'He was rather vocal of them and I heard them voiced while I was a Consort.'
You say 'Aye.'
You say 'He suspected, and I do as well, that the Band of Light that you had founded was more than it outwardsly seemed.'
You say 'Am I correct in this, Duchess?'
Isabeau frowns wonderingly.
Isabeau says 'Erm '
Isabeau says 'No, I dont think so.'
Isabeau says 'How does it appear outwardly.'
You say 'As simply a gathering of those who walk the Light to a common group.'
You say 'I imagine it has more martial import, though.'
Isabeau gives you Charter of the Band of Light by Scholar Livana Arianwen.
You nod.
Isabeau says 'That is what we are if you wish to read it.'
You say 'I heard of this being written. However... in any case, I am asking, has import on that, but only in passing.'
You say 'I believe you met the Demon Kefuquus, am I not right?'
Isabeau sits down and thinks deeply.
Isabeau says 'Ohh yes.'
You say 'I did as well. And it was a less than pleasant experience.'
Isabeau shudders at the horror and represses tears.
You grimace painfully at the thought.
Isabeau says 'Aye '
Isabeau sits down and rests.
You say 'In any case, if you have any belief that Miruvhor likes the demon any more than Val Miran does, let me dispel those now.'
You say 'The demon is unlike any that has come forth before.'
Isabeau nods.
You say 'He will not leave Miruvhor unscathed in his coming.'
You say 'I asked about the Band of Light...'
You say 'Because I wonder if the Band possesses any... weapons, or relics to fight demons of this sort?'
You say 'You can imagine, Miruvhor has none.'
Isabeau says 'Aye, we have two divisions within the band'
You nod.
Isabeau says 'We are one of faithfull and one of defenders.'
You nod.
Isabeau says 'But as to relics we have but ourselves and our faith '
Isabeau says 'We have however been told by Lord Luqin.'
Isabeau says 'That the only way to defeat the demon'
Isabeau says 'Will be if we can gather the entire world in common cause.'
Isabeau sighs.
Isabeau says 'This is most difficult as you can imagine '
Llyorid sighs and considering something for a moment.
Llyorid mutters something about implications.
Isabeau says 'As there are many many different ideals to mesh.'
Llyorid kneels before Isabeau and holds his sword up in his hands to Isabeau.
Isabeau says 'But I would welcome Miruvhor.'
You say 'I pledge upon myself, that I will join you if you are to defeat the demon.'
You say 'I cannot speak for Miruvhor in this, but I speak for myself.'
Isabeau says 'And I would wish we could find common ground even if only on this one issue.'
You nod.
Isabeau says 'Ahh you wish to see if we win first ?'
Isabeau smiles happily.
You say 'No.'
Llyorid stands straight.
You say 'I repay debts, and I owe one both to Kefuquus and Moleran.'
Llyorid narrows his eyes.

If I could have even a fraction of a similar experience in Guild Wars, I would personally welcome it.

An RPG district is a catastrophe of non-RPG'ers coming to question everyone's sexuality just waiting to happen. I know I will, even though I'm myself guilty of enjoying a good roleplaying session now and again.
In essence, Guild Wars is hardly the most inviting game to roleplay in. Sure, it's a fantasy setting, but that doesn't make it an RPG. Cooperative fantasy action/adventure is what it should be called. Of course, the "RPG" appellation boosts sales. Might as well roleplay in Quake.
"Pray tell, good sir, dost thine rocket gibbeth the foul Knights of Infernus with zealous fastidiousness?"
Anyway, I'd suggest to keep roleplaying a thing for within a willing party and mostly outside of towns. For your own sake and enjoyment.

go home you closed minded person.
i don't role-play, i couldn't be bothered, but if people do want to role play, thats fine let them have there own districts.
in role play i gather its like you talk as though you aren't playing a game
Role Play Version
eg. "Hello, im looking for a sword, can i see your selection?"
"yes, here you go"
Normal Version
eg "<><><> SELLING SWORD FOR 40k!!!!!! BUY NOW VERY GOOD SWORD, YOU MUST HAVE THIS SWORD OTHERWISE YOU ARE NOOB!!!! <><><>"
