Not true. Damage type and evolution, both of which affect damage.
Obviously, (if the guide is correct) a warthog is better vs undead for the blunt damage, as skeletons are more vulnerable to it for example. In addition, a Dire pet deals substantially more damage than a hearty pet does, and serves a different role.
There is a purpose for this for a beastmaster, as much as there is a need for different bow types for a ranger. Just because you won't use it doesn't make it invalid.
There is absoultely no need for more than one skin for a weapon. There is absolutely no need to have customized appearances, or male/female characters. There IS an actual reason to want the ability to change pets.
