Default Guild Wars PnP RPG

I'm an old-school PnP gamer, and I still play weekly with a group of buddies. I would love to see Guild Wars in a pen & paper format. I wonder if Anet has ever considered doing such? The system in-game could easily be converted to function as a tabletop game IMO. Sure, certain things would have to be tweaked, but I don't think it would take too much. I imagine for dice they could go with d10/percentile, as they have percentile adjustments in-game already.

Is there anyone else who finds this idea appealing?

If they ever did decide to give it a shot, I'd like to offer my services as a proofreader/playtester.

/signed (Big surprise, huh? No, not the d20-avatar guy, never...)

I'd be willing to help with playtesting, proofreading, design, anything. If Anet doesn't want to do it, do you think we could get their permission (it is their IP, of course...) to get a homebrew project going in Community Works? Isn't there a PnP WoW RPG?

Gaile, Alex, anyone?

just use gurps and mod it for a special gw version. you can use gurps to do any type of pnp rpg setting that you want.

Or the d20 System. I've never messed with GURPS. Any pros for GURPS over d20?

Edit: Yeah, there is a WoW PnP RPG, published by White Wolf.

Finally, my Mac friends would get to play Guild Wars with me!

I played Gurps like a decade ago... no thanks, rather have it done in a proprietary fashion. D20 I love, but seeing as how GW uses percentile already, I think that would be the way to go.

Eugaet, if it comes down to a community effort, I'd be more than willing to pitch in. Think of the monster manual! That'd be fun.

I know. I'm already thinking of the different manuals and accessories:
Player's Handbook and Game Master's Guide, of course
Player's Guidebook to Tyria
Races of Tyria
...and all the class-specific handbooks, character sheets, a GM screen...

I think I'll put together a mock general character sheet. You know, in all my free time...

Depending on how Anet went about the design process, everything may be already laid out for a PnP version. I know when my friends and I mess around with game design, we start with a PnP prototype to make sure the mechanics work out. And who knows...maybe they're already working on it.

Agreed. This would be fun.

It'd be so cool to have PnP Guild Wars. I think this is a really good idea. I'd like to see how exactly it would work, but I think it'd be really cool.

If it's gonna be based off the d20 system, and it should be, then you could just use a standard d20 sheet. Or one of the 4 or 5 modified ones that I have floating around my hard drive. I have a nice one that's 4 pages. Plus I have just about a gig and a half of various D&D books, roughly 70 or so books. So, if this does get going in community works, you can count me in.

The problem with basing it off the D20 system is the stats. In GW, the only stats you have are what come with your professions (read: abilities). Hitpoints and mana pool are based upon your level. There's no Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. I would prefer the PnP GW stick as closely as possible to the existing in-game mechanics.

Don't get me wrong, I love D20, it's my fav RPG system. However, I think it would be more work to convert GW to a D20 system than it would be to just come up with a new system based on the existing structure of GW.

The newest PnP RPG I've played is Warhammer, and they did a damn good job IMO. The world is much deadlier than those I am used to, but it is still an outstanding piece of work. Warhammer uses d10's/percentile system, and while I would like to use percentile myself for GW, I am thinking of a different setup than Warhammer. In Warhammer, low is good, except when rolling damage. I don't like that myself, I like high is good, always.

Traditional role-playing games. A bunch of people sitting around a table, with a ton of books and dice. The characters are written on character sheets. The most famous would be Dungeons & Dragons. Some people also use maps and miniatures to add a more tactical element to combat. Myself, when I run games, I use my PC and a DLP projector. I project the map on to either the wall or the tabletop. Much better than dry-erase boards.

we used to play and old swedish RPG over IRC ...

we had a dice bot the game master typed the story in ...

often he had to type the long sections in before game and just copy/paste ...

it was, well, different to play, and it was a bit hard sometimes, but as we lived on different places that was all we could do at the time =) ...

but it was still Pen and Paper, in a new way ... it was fun none the less ...

someone could always take the big step and try to make a home-made version of it GW ...

don´t know about the legal issues but as long as you don´t sell it or ANet make their own version and you go better then them it won´t be to bad ...

the big thing is to get the figures, monsters etc. to work with a system and balance it ...

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I'm not sure what the Open Gaming License allows you to do with the d20 System, if it's all or nothing, or if you can use parts of it and make up the rest. I'll have to read up on it. I didn't want to go with the d20 stats either, I'd rather stick with the specific GW class stats.

Nice. I've read many articles about DMs who use this method. I'll roll up a character. Let me know when to come over.

I say we do it. We may end up eventually getting served with a Cease & Desist, but in the meantime...it'll be fun.

Count me in for assisting, I still gather my wife and kids once every 2 weeks for a PnP AD&D session, they all love it. Since we all play GW too, I'm sure they'd enjoy a PnP GW. Lemme know if ya need any help or are looking for any ideas. I agree with Lasher though I played Gurps and don't feel it'd be suitable for a GW PnP and it may be easier to setup a new system to more closely match GW's than to convert an already established system. My Wife and I created a simple PnP for playing with our kids(especially the 6 yr old twins) using facets from a few dfferent game systems but based on D12 & D6. we play that whenever the twins want to play as AD&D is a little too complicated for them.

Hey, that's a cool idea. My 3 and 5yo each recently got their own set of dice in their Christmas stockings (because they wouldn't keep their paws off of mine). I'll have to see if they're interested in playing/designing some simple games in which to use them.

I'll try to put together a mock char sheet this weekend. I'm not going to tweak GW stats to fit within the d20 System, I'll leave them as is. I'll post a link to the PDF when I'm done.

Eugaet ... sounds cool =) looking forward to see it ...

if you all are serious with this, why not gather up some day next week online (MSN or such?) and talk it through ...

System to use, how to design it, what order etc.

then it´s just hard work the rest of the way =)

I am all for it ... to bad we won´t be able to play it together in a group if we get it to work, guess we will have to make it over IRC or soemthing =) hehe

but I´m in for it ... just send me a PM with your MSN or such =)

I run my game (The World's Largest Dungeon) every other Saturday, it's usually about 8 hours or so, and I live in Iowa. Who wants to come to Iowa for some gaming? LOL

Maybe I can join via web cam.

EmperorTippy tried to get an online D&D group together a while back...not sure what ever became of it.
