Non-Guild 1 v 1
Hi all
I was recently playing a PvP match in Fort Aspenwood and several times I found myself fighting against a particular warrior from the opposite team (I am also a warrior) and I found this a lot of fun.
Unfortunately I lost against him because despite me getting him down to less health than me (which I was proud of cause he had 15k armour and mine is 1.5K) several undead monsters started attacking me and I eventually died.
Later we came across each other again and tried our best to kill each other, which was one heck of a lot of fun, but about half way through the battle there were 2 assasins on his side also attacking me, i died. Finally the third time I won but only because some NPC's were attacking him too.
Immediately after the match I publically said in Fort Aspenwood that I think it would be cool to have 1 v 1 matches with anyone instead of just limiting it to people within guilds. I wasn't going to post this idea until several people in aspenwood also agreed it would be a nice feature.
What do you all think?

Balance becomes a big issue in 1v1.
Certain skills will be too good in 1v1 and others will be completely useless...
Not to mention the fact that you would often find yourself in a stalemate situation. Two W/Mo's going against each other is likely to never end.

Meh, could go both ways.
On 1 hand it would be quite fun to challenge friends without having to go through the hastle of inviting them as guests (that works doesn't it?). But the other hand you'd have 100s of morons in outposts challenging you to duals just becuase they're useless and want to prove something...

I got a story. I was battling in the random arenas. My team was winning and we were down to the very last guy.
He was a W/Mo using Healing Breeze and Healing Hands. It was just me an Assassin and a lvl18 warrior and we couldnt kill him. He ended up taking out both of my partners and it was just me and him 1v1.
We fought for a whole freakin hour because our skills canceled each other's out. None of our team mates left. They just kept arguing with each other and everything. Finally, he left and we won but we declared it a draw.
Morale of the story. 1v1 is may not be such a good idea.

you could always just guest people to your guild for the 1v1 and then duel them there, and also there is no armor diffrence between 15k and 1.5k just looks.

Balancing could be an issue, yes, but if your gonna challenge a person to a 1 v 1 (or vice versa) then your going to want to tweak your skills to use the ones that are likely to be most effective against the other person's profession. (e.g. if a mesmer was going to 1 v 1 with an ele, that mesmer is likely to want to bring some interupt spells).
@ Evilsod - yes that would potentially be a problem, but I can't see it happening often tbh.
@Halc yon - stalemates dont happen often though, and besides, its usually more fun to have the excitement of fighting a person who is similarly skilled / has similar skills to you because then its about pressing the right buttons at the right time. Not only that, if a 1 v 1 feature was implemented it should contain a time limit (say 10 minutes) and if neither opponent dies, they both get say half the amount of faction points they would if they were to have won, or it could be perhaps the winner is the person with the most health.

Here's what you do;
PM him, challenge him. Get an officer/leader to send him a guest invite to your guild. He visits your guildhall, you have a 1v1 scrimmage at the flagstand.
Good game?

Officers might not be online though and if they were, they would perhaps get fed up of other guild members pestering them to guest invite others. Would be far easier just to add the opponent to your team and have a '1 v 1 battle' button appear.

Can people in your guild watch those 1v1 fights in the guild hall? Anyway,I wouldn't mind having non-guild 1v1 too,but then again I don't really care that much.

You'd be surprised. It can happen quite often in some mission areas. Places like ToA would be plagued by it too. Specially when in long trips to FoW people just get into random debates about how my W/Mo could kick your W/Mos arse etc. Would lead to nothing but trouble. The prospect of dueling friends would be good, but could it out-do the cons?

All of this just gave me an idea.
What about battles with special rules that officers can decide on?
For example.
decide between 1v1,2v2,3v3,4v,4 and so on.
Win conditions such as last man standing, or most kills and stuff.

Dunno if it would out-do the cons but I believe (though I obviously can't prove) it probably would do. There would be people who want to excersise their ego etc but these people are just the type that should be ignored. I mean take GW Factions idea of having two alliances.
The downside to it would be that people would take it far too seriously, and I have seen people taking it too seriously, but so far the majority of people see it as a little fun and enjoy it for what it is. Though admittedly 1v1 matches would have a more personal feel to them than an alliance feud.
I certainly know what your saying though. I can imagine several "omg i can pwn you in 1 v 1" but part of the fun in that could be that the person on the recieving end of the insult/threats could take them up on the offer and wipe the floor with them

how about you just use the search for the topic and bump the various threads that have already been posted on the exact same topic.

What about making profession-specialized 1vs1 arenas?
G/El 1vs1 arenas, R/Me 1vs1 arenas...
My dream is setting it up so you choose the profession of your opponent and if ever someone applies for the same kind of matchup, you're on for a 1vs1.

The thing about being evenly matched is that it doesn't take a lot to screw up, and if you do... you're the worse player. Mesmers would totally own everything, necromancers would be on the worthless side. No soul reaping or death magic.

Because the search isn't functioning
@Iskrah - yeah that would be pretty cool
@Kai Nui - Yeah but that depends how seriously players take it. If I do a 4v4 or 8v8 PvP match and lose, I don't think to myself 'damn my team was terrible' its more of a case of 'oh well, we could have done better, better luck next time'.
Plus its also about how much you lose by. e.g. That warrior I mentioned earlier - had I have had a 1v1 against him and died in 2-3 hits then yes I would be dissapointed, but if I died but managed to take him down say 70-80% of his health or so, at least I would know that I put up a good fight.

Good Idea... But to expand to all game types, fust make a zone where a player can "set up" a match. They get to choose the type of match, how many players there are, and perhaps some other random options to spice things up... Then other players can click on him to look at the settings, and join the queue if they want. Once there are enough players in the queue, it establishes teams and sends them off into the battlefield!
